no age x new era contest

no age x new era

Remember that Panda Bear New Era cap we gave away a few months back? Well now Randy + Dean of No Age have gone and designed this extremely limited (and extremely gangster) fitted in collaboration with New Era + the Fader, and we have one to give away. Just leave us a comment with your name and your favorite album of '08 so far; see, apparently I'm running out of decent contest ideas. Anyway, the winner also gets one of those Fader/SoCo Esau Mwamwaya/BLK JKS 7-inches we mentioned recently. I'll pick a winner next Friday.

new white denim video :: "all you really have to do"

Here's the official new video for White Denim's "all you really have to do" -- one of the very best jams of '07 -- which will appear on the band's upcoming UK LP, Workout Holiday:

[update: video is back & working again]

Speaking of Workout Holiday, here's the album art, and a free mp3 of "Mess Yr Hair Up," courtesy of WD's UK label, Full Time Hobby:

radiohead in d.c.

(photo)

Thanks to our friend Information Leafblower for directing us to Radiohead's entire D.C. show in mp3 format. Including a little off every record (minus Pablo Honey), this setlist looks incredible, and will convert some of our impatience for this Sunday's Dallas show into excitement. Check Radiohead Not For Profit for more live tapings throughout the tour.

In addition to hearing Radiohead perform, those in attendance at the D.C. show Sunday night were treated to “three to six inches of rain, which [ranks] very high in local spring storm history." In fact, thanks to the floods, a number of people didn't even make it in.

paavoharju

paavoharju

Laulu Laakson Kukista is the stunning new LP from Finland's Paavoharju. I've only begun to digest this thing, but like their last album, it's pretty out there. Much of it sounds like a distant AM radio transmission, fading in and out from some hazy, psychedelic ether. Here's what the band has to say about it (presumably translated from Finnish):

"Sounds of raindrops falling on sheet metal roof melted together with old television's random-dot-pattern-noise. Leena Uotila's soft voice echoes in empty, dusty rooms. Catowls gathered to the sky, appletrees were blooming and waves rocked a barrell against the pier. Suddenly all this started to form esoteric mildew to cassette's magnetic tape. I finished our work with prayer only a moment before the cold winds rose from Saimaa."

Laulu laakson kukista is now an official early frontrunner for best cover art of the year. Buy the LP here.

please don't explode

Here's the trailer for Visioneers, an upcoming film starring the great Zach Galifianakis. The movie's basic premise: people start exploding because of stress. The trailer features a new piece from Tim Delaughter's score, which he told us about back in June of last year:

new RATATAT: "shiller"

I'm not sure how I missed this, but RATATAT released a new, vinyl-only 7" single last week to very little fanfare, and it's pretty great. I've been wearing out cinematic A-side jam "Shiller," which will appear on the band's forthcoming 3rd full-length, while b-side "Mahalo" -- which sounds exactly how you'd expect a RATATAT song called "Mahalo" to sound -- will be on the 4th LP, according to the 7" sleeve.

mp3:
RATATAT :: Shiller

Awesome, yes, but just not quite the same as vinyl, which can be had here for only 3 bucks. RATATAT's LP3 is out July 8 on XL. The cover art rules:

radiohead + lasers

thom yorke in charlotte, NC (photo by Jonny Greenwood)

Radiohead shot a video for "House of Cards" earlier this week while in W. Palm Beach, Florida, of all places. And Radiohead being Radiohead, they didn't even use a camera: they used a fucking laser. The video was directed by James Frost (the dude who directed Coldplay's "Yellow" vid), and allegedly stars this girl as Thom's love interest.

In other news, thanks to those that emailed me about this song they found on Thom Yorke's Waste Central profile, which is apparently a Jonny Greenwood remix of "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi." It's unclear if it's an official thing, but it is the same song heard at the end of the band's "Scotch Mist" webcast.

chilombo

esau mwamwaya

I've posted about "the African Phil Collins" before, and he's since become a staple on our sirius show. Yet somehow, despite the fact that he's wholly awesome, he continues to fly under the radar while dudes like Vampire Weekend get famous. Moving on, The Fader/Southern Comfort are releasing a new limited 7" with this Mwamwaya track and a song from South Africa's BLK JKS. They've hooked us up with a couple copies to give away to you guys; just email us here and I'll pick the winners next week. Here's a glimpse of the cover art, courtesy of kaleidoscopic quilt-artist Ian Hundley:

goodbye horses

(photo)

This jam has been sort of inescapable lately, whether I'm cruising around Liberty City in a stolen Range Rover listening to Iggy Pop's radio show, or watching one of the best segments on the eminently rewatchable Fully Flared DVD. I hadn't heard it in probably 10 years, and I'd always assumed it was a dude, but it's not, it's Q Lazzarus. Either way, it's apparently experiencing a welcome revival, and it works just as well in a videogame or a skate vid as it did in that messed up scene in Silence of the Lambs:

A couple things worth checking out on myspace: a new remix by Ghosthustler (their first project since Alan Palomo left the band) and a new song from one of my favorite new groups of '08, Salem. In case you missed our first two posts on the band:

waving hands

sunnybrook (right)

Thanks to WSJR for keeping me up on what's going on in Denton; otherwise I likely would've missed out on this undeniable little gem from Sunnybrook. "Big Waving Hands" falls somewhere between the comforting, harmonic '70s-inspired folk of Fleet Foxes and the haunting, ethereal pop of Grizzly Bear. It's a little smaller and not quite as polished as those -- Sunnybrook is just one kid from Denton, after all -- but it's every bit as warm and inviting, and it gets better with each listen:

sunnybrook :: big waving hands

I've mentioned a couple free Santogold things recently, and here's another: you can download a free remix of one of the best tracks from her new record, "Lights Out," here, of all places. Get the ringtone, too (do people still use these things?) And if the Bud Lime ads weren't enough for you, Santi is also recording a song with Pharrell and Julian Casablancas for Converse.
