Rock Show Posters

death cab
Poster by Todd Slater

One of the few visual art forms that interests me these days is the concert poster. I like the vivid imagery, the limited production runs, and the fact that they feature bands that I care about. So I think I'll probably feature an artist on here every once in a while that's making cool posters that you should probably buy/frame/hang on your empty wall.

Today's Artist is Todd Slater. His style is pretty eclectic, and he has designed posters for some of my favorite bands, including two posters for shows that I've recently attended (bloc party @ gypsy & the arcade fire @ trees). Here they are:

Let Me See That Thong

You may have noticed some new shirts on the left side of this blog. Okay, I was really bored the other day so I decided to hit up Spreadshirt.com and open a store carrying various Gorilla vs. Bear merch. And, yes, I do realize that no one outside of me and my friends really cares, but it didn't cost me anything and some of the shit actually turned out pretty cool. (click on the thong to check it out)

Keep Yourself Feeling Brand New

dallas' own

Okay first of all, there are a couple new blogs that really deserve some hyping up; instead of describing them, I'm just gonna recommmend you check them out. I may have mentioned one or two of these before, and trust me, they are all worth your time. nice work by all of you:

Clever Titles Are So Last Summer
South Of Mainstream
Funtime OK
Dreams Of Horses

random shit...

--Other good stuff:

Dodge has some Lucero, some Suburban Kids With Biblical Names, and other various Dodge-approved jams, which means you know it's gonna be hot.

Matt points us in the direction of Simple Mission, where you'll find 2 tracks from ex-Unicorns new band, Islands.

The Vicar hooks us up w/ some songs from one of my favorite bands, The Walkmen. Can't wait to see these guys at Lollapalooza.

Please tell me you're kidding, Mexico

--No, this isn't offensive at all. Unless you happen to be black.

*****

--Sigur Ros' Jonsi says about new album:

"We are aiming for a korn and papa roach kind of thing." (Jesus I hope he's just kidding)

And finally, The Dallas Observer reviews Sufjan Stevens' "Illinois", and here's a snippet (heh, love that word. snippet.):

"...anyone turned off by the orchestral overreaching of The Polyphonic Spree would be wise to give Stevens' restrained take on the style a shot."

I guess I can see the comparison, but count me as one of the people who is NOT turned off by the Spree's "orchestral overreaching". In fact, I quite like it. I don't care how cynical or jaded you are, you can't see them perform and not be moved in some way. In fact, I'm going to see their show (complete w/ fireworks) tomorrow night at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden. Anybody else going?

And on that note...some non-album Polyphonic Spree tracks for you (follow link):

Soldier Girl (Stereolab remix)
Wig In A Box (Hedwig and the Angry Inch cover)

Best Breakup Songs Ever. Serious.

Here's a pretty good playlist for when you feel like wallowing in self-pity for a while:

The Wrens Happy (follow link)

Sample Lyric:
aren't you happy now
got what you want
i wanted you
but i'm over that now
i'm over it

The Beatles For No One (follow link)

Your day breaks, your mind aches
There will be time when all the things she said will fill your head
You won’t forget her

The Decemberists Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect

i built this balustrade
to keep you home, to keep you safe
from the outside world
but the angles and the corners
even though my work is unparalelled
they never seemed to meet
this structure fell about our feet
and we were free to go

The Postal Service Nothing Better

I admit that i have made mistakes and i swear
I'll never wrong you again
You've got a lure (allure?) i can't deny,
But you've had your chance so say goodbye
Say goodbye

Stars On Peak Hill

I walk awhile before I sleep, count the secrets that I keep
I hope for more, I know for sure I'll fall apart before I weep
I disconnect the telephone 'cause I can choose to be alone
I'll get more done, I'll have some fun,
pretend you're not the only one

Neva Dinova It's Worse When You're Young (follow link)

A lot of good
my kisses did your dead mouth
But goodbyes are final now she swore
Goodbye, Goodbye, Goodbye, Goodbye
Goodbye, to all the things you love

The Streets It's Too Late

I didn't know that is over
Til it was too late, too late
But if I ever needed you
Would you be there?

Know of any others? Holler and I'll try to add them.

Insound says about Applied Communications album "Uhh Sort Of":

"In some way or another, all of the songs on this record explore the psychological holes left by the recent death of his single-parent mother. Among these songs influenced by his loss he makes a pop tribute filled with exuberant handclaps, tambourine hits, and analog drum machine waltz beats. This record is pornography without the nudity. It's completely honest, messed up truth about how and why an orphaned teenage boy thinks, cries, and masturbates."

Akron/Family

Okay, i'm a complete dumbass. I hastily put up my top ten list last week, and I totally forgot one of my favorites that will probably end up on my final year-end list.

akron/family

See, I've been listening obsessively to one or two albums lately (thanks a lot Sufjan), and I've sort of been neglecting everything else...but on Sunday afternoon I listened to Akron/Family's self-titled debut LP on my iPod, and I was reminded of how great it is.

Now I wouldn't even waste your time posting about this album if it had been included on any of the plethora of lists that have been posted since...but unfortunately, it seems this album is being "slept on", as the kids say. Drawing comparisons w/ such diverse acts as Devendra Banhart and The Animal Collective to Nick Drake and even Sufjan Stevens, Akron Family's music falls somewhere between psych-folk and lo-fi pop. Do yourself a favor and buy it today.

who me?

beetlejuice

Okay, I'm not sure how much demand there is gonna be for this...not exactly indie rock. In fact, i'm going to bet the majority of you will think it's a worthless piece of shit. But I think it's catchy as hell, pretty funny, and could probably be considered "genius" in the same vein as the late Wesley Willis or some other fu**ed up "outsider" music. If you've ever heard/seen Beetlejuice on the Howard Stern show, you know what i'm sayin. Listen to this 3 times and see if you can get the chorus out of your head:

monday morning hip hop

abstract original

I think we all know how I feel about Monday mornings...so to start your week off right, I thought I'd continue the hip hop theme w/ a new(ish) track from one of my favorite mc's ever, Q-Tip. This track features one of Busta's best verses in a while (in my opinion), some minimalist production from Pharell, and of course, the unmistakable flow of Tip. I believe this track was only released as a black-label 12", and is probably now playing at a club near you. Cop it:

Okay, I know since most of you didn't care about my Detroit Pistons posts, you REALLY aren't going to give a shit about this volleyball post.

However, i promised the guy who runs the tournaments (steve) a few weeks ago that I'd link to his site, even though it's updated less frequently than Tim Duncan's facial expression. For some reason he thinks that if even a few of the regular visitors of this site clicked on the link, it would quadruple his traffic. Wait, it probably would...what's 4 times 2?

Plus I figured if i included a couple pics of a hot volleyball girl, you guys would forgive the lameness of this post. So thank you in advance.

so close

rasheed yelling at a midget
those refs were bad. real bad.

Well last night was rough...so frustrating, because the Pistons had the opportunities and were totally in control through about 3 quarters...but they couldn't pull it out. Oh well, we've always got next year (and last year, and the '88-90 seasons).

By the way, check out this article in my (original) hometown paper about detroit pistons bloggers, featuring yours truly. Thanks Krista!

Moving on, thanks to South of Mainstream, who hooked me up w/ a nice track from American Analog Set to calm me down a bit. Go download it, and while you're at it, browse around their site and get some other really good indie (in the truest sense of the word) music.

Some other music I listened to last night to calm my nerves (follow link to download):

eternal sunshine

Jon Brion Main Theme to Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind

I could, and often do, listen to this track on repeat at night when going to sleep or just when I'm tense and need to chill out. Jon Brion is awesome and so diverse (did ya know he produced the new unreleased Fiona Apple album and a few tracks on Kanye West's new one? yeah, actually if you read blogs you probably knew that)

Pinback Penelope

The bassline in this song, while kind of rocking and never boring, is also really soothing and relaxing to me for some reason. Classic Pinback.

...and speaking of unreleased, Jon Brion-produced Fiona Apple:

Fiona Apple Red, Red, Red

Are those wolves howling in the background? yeah those are. Jon Brion is a genius. this album really needs to be released.

Well I'm still giddy over/exhausted from last night's Detroit Pistons' victory, so no big post this morning. Just a couple things to help you waste time at work/school/wherever (hopefully i'll post again later w/ some music so check back):

Pitchfork has reviewed Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's self-titled debut, and they like it (a lot):

"A band that mashes together Talking Heads and Neutral Milk Hotel while also stopping in to visit the shimmering, wafting ambiance of Yo La Tengo, the harmonic trickery of Modest Mouse, and the chorused guitarwork of pre-Loveless My Bloody Valentine? What website do you think this is? We are fucking there."

some songs

It's been a while since I did a straight music post, and this one is kinda unorganized and all over the place, but here are a few songs I've been rocking lately...hope you guys like 'em.

The Arcade Fire
Arcade Fire at Trees (dallas)

The Arcade Fire's newest single, "Cold Wind", has been featured on nearly every blog that exists (including this one) in the past couple weeks, so you probably already have that track. (if not i could probably hook you up, email me or leave a comment) But, the B-side will be their cover of the 1939 Ary Baroso/Ed Russell standard "Brazil". Here's The Arcade Fire doing it live:

Arcade Fire Brazil (live) mp3

I didn't really expect to see a Paul Wall track reviewed by Pitchfork, and positively reviewed at that. But apparently he is adored by gangsters AND hipsters alike. Anyway, this track is some straight southern (via Houston) hip hop. Not a genre I'm usually that fond of, but Paul Wall's got something going here. What it do.

Paul Wall Sittin Sideways mp3

***

Also recently reviewed by Pitchfork, the Concretes' version of "Miss You" is considerably more melancholy and haunting (and considerably less, umm, groovy?) than the Stones' version. Compare/contrast:

The Concretes Miss You (Stones cover) mp3
The Rolling Stones Miss You mp3

Another artist that's been blowing up the blogsphere lately is Norway's Annie, and this track has a distinct '80's soundtrack-y, Cindy Lauper-style feel to me. I know i just said that, but I'm not sure exactly what it means. Listen:

Annie Me Plus One mp3

clap your hands

Finally, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah has been rocking my iPod nonstop since the weekend (when I could bring myself to stop listening to "Illinois") This is one band that I really think will live up to and transcend all the hype (ie the Arcade Fire). Go get a bunch of tracks from Dodge and Rachael, then buy the album...I ordered mine last night (only 12 bucks). Recommended: "Is This Love?", "Over and Over Again" (so Talking Heads), and "Upon This Tidal Wave Of Young Blood".

I Hate You So Much, Monday

big ben talking to some douchebag
Ben Wallace w/ Kid Rock before the game: Probably why the Pistons lost

Well, today pretty much sucks. The Pistons lost a heartbreaker last night, I'm tired and dehydrated from my volleyball tournament this weekend, and I don't want to be at work today. But here are a few things to make your Monday suck a little less:

Head over to YANP, where Matt has hooked us all up w/ a great video for The Chalets "Feel The Machine". Also check out their website for more songs/videos/etc.

Go to Said the Gramophone to get two seriously awesome, highly recommended tracks: one from The New Pornographers new one, "Twin Cinema", and one from the Wolf Parade debut LP set to be released later this year.

Rachael over at Underrated has some tracks from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (that you can't find on their website), as well as some Say Hi To Your Mom. Thanks, Rachael. Sorry about your iPod.

Hit up the Gorilla Mask media section for some of the funniest video clips I've ever seen. You could probably waste your whole day here if you wanted to. Don't tell my boss.

What I'm rocking on my iPod at work to cheer me up (mp3s):

New Strokes Album "like a seedless watermelon"

Anyone else excited about this? Fu** the hipster backlash, I like these guys:

from rollingstone.com:

The Strokes have finished recording their third album, which they are mixing with studio whiz Andy Wallace. The album is due out in January.

"I don't wanna go overboard," says singer Julian Casablancas, sitting on a stoop on Fourteenth Street in Manhattan, "but I'm pretty excited. It's like a seedless watermelon -- I like it."

With no deadlines hanging over them in the studio, the Strokes had plenty of time to perfect the tunes, which feature Casablancas' voice front and center for the first time.

Highlights of the fourteen songs include Casablancas venting on "Razor Blade" with the cutting line "My feelings are more important than yours"; guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. ripping into a solo on "Vision of Division" sounding like Dick Dale on crack; and the starkly beautiful "Ask Me Anything" (which came to the singer in a dream), featuring only Casablancas' vocals, and Mellotron courtesy of guitarist Nick Valensi.

Casablancas is racking his brain for the album's title and artwork. But he feels like a weight has been lifted off his shoulders. "I'm relaxed now," he says. "Almost done."

The band is revving up for a larger tour than the one following the previous album. "We were a little road-weary after [2003's] Room On Fire, so it was light," says Casablancas. "Now I think we're ready for fatal touring again -- to go all out. We got our energy back."

A Few Rare Covers (mp3s)

Okay, I know ya'll come to this site because it's a music blog, and not "NBA playoff blog", or "Detroit Pistons blog", and I'm not one of those superstitious fans who goes through lame rituals on game days, but my posts CLEARLY have had an effect on the Pistons performance on the court. When I post pics of the hot Detroit girl on game days, the Pistons win. It's as simple as that. So guess what:

still hot

And I promise that when the NBA Finals are over, and the Pistons have been crowned NBA champs for the 2nd consecutive year, I'll stop. But in the meantime, here's some completely unnecessary pics of super famous Pistons fans, and to thank you guys for bearing w/ me, a few mp3s of some of my favorite cover songs:

8 mile, bitch
Marshall Mathers

Magnum P.I.
nice moustache

And to those of you that have pointed out that it was clearly the 'fro that won game 2 for the Pistons, I agree...that thing is awesome:

A few rare cover song mp3s -- just follow link to download:

Bad Pictures

bloc party

Well I promised shitty Bloc Party pics, so here they are. It was an entertaining show, nothing spectacular, but they sounded great and we (Melissa, Daniel, Jesse, and I) had fun. The sound was pretty much perfect at Gypsy, and Kele's voice sounded really strong.

another crappy pic
See that t-shirt that appears to be floating in midair? yeah, that's Kele

Highlights included the show opener, "Like Eating Glass", as well as a pretty rocking version of "Banquet". The band seemed more animated than when I saw them at SXSW, and their hour-or-so long (?) set was tight (almost too tight?) and filler free...I guess w/ only one EP and one album they don't have much to choose from. They played at least one new song, and it sounded pretty damn good. Here's a couple more awful pics:

another crappy pic

yeah this one sucks too

And here's one decent pic I took when I saw the band at SXSW (in Urban Outfitters). I saw a really similar, slightly better picture in the new Spin magazine...their photographer must've been a few feet in front of me:

bikinis

Plus:

Look what I found in my mailbox yesterday!

come on feel the illinoise

I got my copy of Illinois in the mail yesterday (even though it doesn't come out til July 5!) from Asthmatic Kitty (along w/ a pretty sweet postcard that is now decorating my cubicle at work), and it's officially official: Album of the year, hands down. Have I already said that on here?

Anyway, this is by far the most ambitious, epic, beautiful work Sufjan has ever done (even better than "Michigan". . .and being from Michigan myself, I didn't think he'd top that in my book). In my opinion, the best new album since Funeral was released last September. Buy it now!

New CocoRosie

CocoRosie have sort of been thrown into the same category as other "New Weird America" artists like Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart, and Antony & The Johnsons, and maybe rightfully so. Their music is a haunting, unique, and strange blend of blues, folk, electronica, and hip hop that is unlike anything else you're going to hear. Definitely not for everyone, but I like them...

Photo by Ian Davies--check out his website for more cool pics

more CocoRosie pics here

From Touch and Go's Website:

"Bianca and Sierra Casady are CocoRosie. They are sisters, born in separate states and raised all over the map. They grew apart early in life, not really getting along and living different lives. But they met again in Paris, unsure and unaware, not knowing that it would lead to the recording of one of 2004's most haunting releases, La Maison de Mon Reve.

Now the sisters are nearly inseparable. They've been active for most of 2004, playing dates across the U.S. and making several jaunts to Europe for tours playing with TV on the Radio, Bright Eyes, and Devendra Banhart, among others. They are currently working on new material for a 2005 release."

CocoRosie's second album, "Noah's Ark" (complete w/ unicorn orgy cover-art), comes out on Sept. 13 on Touch and Go Records...here's a few tracks (follow link to download):

She Wants Revenge

she wants revenge

I just saw She Wants Revenge last Thursday in Dallas when they opened for Bloc Party, and they were pretty cool. I don't know much about them, except that they're from L.A., they sound a little like Interpol, and the lead singer Justin wears a hooded sweatshirt over his head when he performs, apparently even if he's in Dallas and it's 95 degrees. check it out:

Detroit, Lift Up Your Weary Head!

not good

Well, my Detroit Pistons fell down 0-2 last night in their series w/ the Spurs, and while my prediction remains Pistons in 6, I have to admit I'm getting kinda worried. So i'm gonna dedicate today's post to the Pistons...here are some inspirational pics and an mp3 (if this Sufjan Stevens song doesn't help, I don't know what will) to motivate my squad.

I've mentioned MTV2's "Wonder Showzen" before, and if you haven't seen it yet, it's fu**ing hilarious (assuming you like to watch little kids do messed up shit). I'm not sure what kind of parent allows their kids to appear on this show, but I am pretty sure these parents deserve a visit from Child Protective Services. I'm too tired/lazy right now to do a proper post, plus I'm mad because I didn't get any decent bloc party photos last night due to some meathead security guy threatening to confiscate my camera. Since when do they give a fu** at Gypsy if you take pics? (don't worry though, i'll still post the shitty ones i took). Anyway, here's a generic post based on my fail-safe posting formula:

"Because while every band may talk about saving
rock 'n' roll, these dudes can actually do the job."

--Jonah Bayer, Alternative Press

"... an inspiring behemoth of a rock album, and pretty convincing proof that as far as saviors of rock go, Tiger Bear Wolf are an animal worth placing your bets on."
--cokemachineglow.com

"The rock music world of 2005 A.D. didn’t see Tiger Bear Wolf coming, and this riot of a band is likely to rip it to shreds before the critics can even think about what to put on their pompous little “Best Of ‘05” lists."

One More Sufjan Stevens Post

illinois

While Sufjan Stevens' "Illinois" won't be officially released until July 5, you can pre-order it NOW from the Asthmatic Kitty website for only $10 and they will ship it to you right away.

I ordered mine yesterday, and the more I listen to the 10 or so tracks I have from this album, the more I love it. I know I probably spew superlatives on here all the time, but I just can't get over how talented this guy is. In fact, in a year that has already seen many great albums, I'm going to go ahead and proclaim "Illinois" my album of the year. It's that good.

So seriously, get it. Now.

I know there's a few mp3s circulating around the internet from the album, but i haven't seen this one yet, so consider it an exclusive or something. "Decatur, or, Round of Applause for Your Step Mother", is featured on the newest Paste Magazine compilation, and this track alone is worth the price of the magazine. I could (and did) listen to this all day. Here you go:

Decatur, or, Round of Applause for Your Step Mother (follow link)

This next track you've probably heard, and while I love all the songs from "Illinois" that I've heard so far, I think this is my favorite:

Chicago (follow link)

go get a couple more tracks from mikejonze. then order the album. I'm serious.

In Breaking NBA Playoff news:

More worthless links:

This is probably the saddest thing I've ever read.

The White Stripes: The B-Sides

The White Stripes' new album "Get Behind Me Satan" hit the streets dropped came out yesterday, and I really like it (then again, I like everything they do), but I think these two non-album B-sides are just as compelling as anything off the album, if not more so.

The first one, "Who's A Big Baby", is, ummm, interesting? Okay it's fu**ing weird. It may just be the novelty of the track, but for some reason I'm really digging it so far. It's kinda got a hypnotic, drunken, wobbly feel to it. The second, "Though I Hear You Calling, I Will Not Answer" has some backwoods 1920's shit going on, along w/ some distorted vocals and xylophone.

These two tracks are much different than anything you've heard from Jack and Meg, and they definitely deserved to be B-sides, but i think they're pretty cool. Check them out and let me know what you think, just follow the link to download:

I Need A New Camera

Update: Molly sent me some pictures and video of the show that is a LOT better than the ones i got...so here's a couple for now, and after work i'll try to figure out how to post the video on here:

conor at stubb's

the faint
The Faint (you may have to squint a little, but I promise it's them)

Here are some pics from the Bright Eyes/The Faint/Airborn Audio show at Stubb's on Saturday, and as you can tell from the quality of these pics it's just about time for me to buy a new camera (donations of any size will be accepted). It didn't help matters that the show was ridiculously packed w/ young Conor-obsessed kids, making it impossible to get anywhere near the stage. And to top it off, the battery life on my camera is about 10 minutes, which prevented me from getting even a shitty picture of Conor...sorry ladies.

airborn audio
Airborn Audio

Oh and if you're wondering how the actual show was, it couldn't have been better. Airborn Audio played a short and tight set of their blunted-out hip hop that seemed to confuse the hell out of most of the emo kids in attendance. The Faint were amazing, as usual, and they got all the girls dancing and sweaty, which is always a good thing. And Bright Eyes set was infinitely better than the last time I saw them (on the "I'm Wide Awake..." tour). Conor seemed to be in a more angst-y/less whiny mood, and his band matched his abnormally (for him) high energy. Of course it didn't hurt that they had the help of this guy:

nick zinner
Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs (you're going to have to trust me on this one)

Highlights of the night included:
  • going into the bathroom to wash my hands before the show, only to find The Faint frontman Todd Baechle taking a self-proclaimed "truck stop shower" in the sink. The Faint's violinist was in there too, and he was like "dude, i've got a key to the room, why don't you use that shower?" and Todd was all like "We have a hotel room?"
  • watching Melissa see the Faint for the first time, as she proceeded to dance her ass off for the entire set.
  • watching the rhythm-less kids in attendance attempt to nod their heads politely to the electro-glitchy hip hop beats of Airborn Audio.
  • my girl Molly, who says she's going to hook us all up w/ way better pictures than mine that she took and possibly even some video of the show! stay tuned!
  • Bright Eyes launching into the beginning of "Lover" to start the encore, only to have the drummer break his bass pedal. Conor, ever the improviser, played "First Day of My Life" while they corrected the problem, then segued flawlessly back into a perfect version of "Lover".
  • fu**ing Nick Zinner on guitar. oh, and The Faint's violinist is a bad ass too.
  • here's Bright Eyes' setlist:

Bright Eyes' setlist

Again, no picture of Conor...but how about two random kids in "Conor Oberst is My Homeboy" t-shirts?

Of course this is the only picture that came out perfect

Iron & Wine/Calexico

Pitchfork reported this week that Iron & Wine and Calexico have collaborated on a "seven-song mini-LP of some of Sam Beam's songs backed by Joey Burns and John Convertino of Calexico, as well as a few other Tucson musicians", entitled "He Lays In Reins" (due out in the fall).

calexico

Calexico's Joey Burns told Pitchfork:

"It's kind of got that Tucson, Arizona sound...It was funny, in the process of mixing some of these songs, we would send [Iron & Wine frontman Sam Beam] the mixes as MP3 files over the internet. So he would listen to them and he would say, 'No, no. Put more stuff in there.' He liked the idea of this being something different that what he would do with an Iron & Wine record, where the arrangements might be a little more minimal. So we've got some instruments that fills it out a little bit."

Here's the tracklist, according to Pitchfork:

01 He Lays in Reins
02 Prison on Route 41
03 History of Lovers
04 Red Dust
05 Burn That Broken Bed
06 16, Maybe Less
07 Dead Mans Will

Some of the tracks slated to appear on this thing were originally recorded by Sam Beam during his unreleased "Home Recordings" session, which i believe is the first thing he recorded under the Iron & Wine moniker. Of course, Gorilla vs. Bear has the whole "Home Recordings" session, and i'm gonna hook you guys up w/ a couple of the tracks that will appear on "He Lays In Reins". Enjoy:

I'm hosting the following tracks on savefile.com...if your name is Sam Beam and you would like the tracks removed, just let me know.

Common--Be

I'm really loving this new Common record, "Be". Common has long been one the most thoughtful and socially conscious artists in hip hop, as well as one of my favorite rappers, and his new one has a real soulful '70's feel to me. (Pitchfork gave it an 8.6 and added it to their "Best New Music" list...which may or may not matter to you depending on how much you love/hate/don't give a shit about Pitchfork). If you're into hip hop and you don't know Common, be sure to check these out tracks from "Be" and let me know what you think.
