March was a busy month, as gorilla vs. bear
saw it's First Anniversary
, held it's first-ever Showcase
, and of course, spent a week in Austin for SXSW
. As a result, I didn't have as much time to seek out as much new music as usual. So this list is a little shorter than normal, but no less sweet. Midlake
's upcoming The Trials of Van Occupanther
has been getting a ridiculous amount of play in my car/home. The Fleetwood Mac comparison that has been thrown around is a valid one, as this record just feels more like '70's classic rock than "indie" (the genre). And that is definitely a good thing.
You know how I feel about Birdmonster
. Like the Midlake record, this is not really "indie" rock. It's just rock, and the entire No Midnight
LP is greatness.
Got Shut Up I Am Dreaming
in the mail yesterday, and it's even better than I thought it'd be. Now we have word that Spencer has another
side project with Dan Bejar (Destroyer
), called Swan Lake
? If that's not the best thing ever, I'll be somewhat disappointed.
I saw SOUND team
perform this song three times this month, and it got markedly better each time. Here's the album version, taken from the band's excellent upcoming LP, Movie Monster
If you'd told me this was B-side from Moon Pix
, I'd totally have believed you. Turns out, this is from Land of Talk's upcoming LP, Applause Cheer Boo Hiss
. Buy it here

This event is going to be tough to top for me, because it exceeded all my expectations, and ended up being a truly magical night. Thanks to everyone who came out, and thanks to all the bands, who not only came to Dallas and put on an insane show, but were also all as nice and fun to hang out with as humanly possible. Here are a couple photos from the night, taken by Dodge
