Neko Case: Live in Dallas
We endured what is possibly Dallas' lamest venue last night to see the lovely Neko Case, and she made it all worthwhile. Highlights included Neko ripping the city of Houston ("We'd never fucking play Houston...because Eddie Money lives there, and he's a fucking mean guy"), a goosebump-inducing version of my favorite track from Fox Confessor Brings the Flood ("Maybe Sparrow"), and a foot-stomping cover of Dylan's "Buckets of Rain".
I also picked up a copy of Neko's amazing tour-only EP, Canadian Amp, which includes this Neil Young cover:

dude - you had a good view! my last time seeing Neko, i was way far back...her voice still carried and was great, but i'd have much rather been a lot closer. will be next time! good pics.
Chris, what do you not like about Granada?
the sound (mostly during the high dials set), the fact that the show started when the sun was still out so we missed most of the high dials while waiting in line (8pm sharp, w/ only two acts?), and just the whole set up last night...reserved tables on the sides? i guess i'd just rather see a show of that size at gypsy.
Personally, I'd like to see Edgar Winter play with Burning Spear.

Chris, those are all the things that I like about Granda! They tell ya what time each band is gonna start, they actually start at that time, and you can sit or stand depending on your preference. I'm too old for the headliners-going-on-at-midnight-on-a-weeknight that you get at the clubs like Gypsy Tearoom.

ahhh, I feel better because I thought you were going to tell me the High Dials sucked live.. It appears that the Granada was the culprit. I remember living in the Big D during the late 80's and going to the Granada to watch movies, eat and drink beer. Was a fine place for that for sure... I remember when the man (Mike?) from CD World bought the place and converted it over. Never got to go for a concert there and had many a chance...
yeah merz, i definitely liked the granada better when it was a movie/dinner theater. what i saw of the high dials was actually really good, i just wish the sound was better.
I must agree with Torr. I'm all about knowing what time a show will actually start so I can plan around. I've missed the start of too many shows with "floating" start times. As for the set up... that's just a matter of preference. It does make them different then other Dallas bar venues. And the Gypsy has basically zero side viewing. Wall on one side and bar on otherside.
The only thing I don't like about Granada is the travelling Beer saleswomen that yell in your ear in between sets. But the Granada has way better sight lines than any other venue in Dallas that plus if you live off Greenville it makes it sweet I walk to shows at the Granada.

“There’s Lightning On Your Shoulder!”
Can’t say enough good things about Neko Case’s performance at the Granada Theatre last night. It was my seventh time to see the Tacoma, WA, singer, so you might not trust my bias when I gush about the hour-and-a-half set, but she’s never been in finer form. Her supporting cast also was the best I’d seen, particularly Jon Rauhouse’s tornado-dizzy finger-pickin’ on banjo and pedal steel and Kelly Hogan’s jaw-dropping harmony vocals. More than a few people fell in love with Hogan last night, asking me who the hell she was, but longtime fans know her for her backup vox on the last three Case records (and, more important, for her tremendously undernoticed 2001 solo album and her work fronting the late, great Jody Grind). (On a personal note, thanks for throwing the cover of “Knock Loud” into the final encore, ladies. Gorgeous.)
More important than how Case and co. did was how Dallas performed. The Monday-night crowd, whch filled the room to a near sell-out, went absolutely ape over Case, cheering and laughing for every song, every pedal steel solo and every “Houston sucks” speech from the band, and the crowd was pretty damn enthusiastic for semi-solid openers the High Dials as well. The city has a rep for not appreciating good shows, but as Noah W. Bailey put it when he left the Granada last night, “even the frat boys were being cool.” And props to whoever fine-tuned the Granada sound to near-perfection.
Of course, a Neko Case concert review is nothing without quotes, which were, more or less: “You know why Houston sucks? Because Eddie Fucking Money lives there.” “The best thing about Texas is that every Mexican restaurant claims to be ZZ Top’s favorite.” “Did you know that Miles Davis was in a Cameo video? He just stands there, mumbling, and you know all he’s saying is [in a low, grouchy voice] ‘motherfuckermotherfuckermotherfucker.’” –Sam Machkovech
i will admit, the sound was markedly better during Neko's set...i was mostly referring to the sound during the high dials set, which i would classify as "painful". sam's review is pretty spot on though. some dumbass did yell "you've got lightning on your shoulder", because she was wearing a strap w/ a lightning bolt on it. get it?

No it shouldn't be revoked. It doesn't matter where Eddie Money lives. He's awesome...he's in his 50's and still rocking. Now it may be mostly casinos and fair grounds but he still wrote some great songs.
Neko Case is a silly little woman (although a hot one) from the New Pornographers. If they write a song as classic as "Two Ticket's To Paradise" I'll give them some credit.
Neko needs to bring the Flood of goodness to Houston! For the reason, that we have Eddie Money living here, i mean she can rip on him, and show us Houston Kids some good music, we could use it.

FYI, that tour-only EP is fairly old (I saw her a few weeks ago and my first reaction was, "Wait, another tour-only EP? How did I miss that?"). And you can buy it online at several mom and pop shops.
picking on houston seems is becoming a trend these days. the drummer of rilo kiley called us an "ass cracker". oh well, what can you do? id really love to see her live some day though.

I too like the Granada. There really isnt a bad "seat" in the place. Saw Ryan Adams play at Gypsy and the whole "doors opened at 8 show started at 9:45" was too much for me. the delay could have been because Ryan really is an a**hole tho. Neko show was freaking fantastic and thought the High Dials were really good also.
