When Illinoise was released last year, it was literally all I listened to for a month straight, and the few of you that read my blog at that time felt the wrath of my obsession in the form of daily Sufjan updates and countless gratuitous photos of Katrina Kerns. Well, I've been listening to the new Sufjan record, The Avalanche: Outtakes and Extras from the Illinois Album, all day long, and this is exactly what I was afraid of. It's amazing, and it provides tangible evidence that Sufjan's "outtakes" are better than most artists' best work. This song features the beautiful background vocals of Katrina Kerns (who else?) and should be more than enough to convince you that this record is no mere collection of "extras", no matter what Sufjan tells you.
