Tapes 'n Tapes in the NY Times

"When the record labels came calling, bloggers got to feel good about themselves, as if they had saved nice guys from a sad life of dive bars and bowling alleys."

Why is it when traditional media outlets mention blogs (mainly, in relation to generating buzz about a band), they do so with tongue firmly planted in cheek? Read the rest of the New York Times show review here.

Because blogs are not a "legit" form of media, no matter how seriously they may take themselves.

oh, anon. only you could manage to answer a rhetorical question with such a snarky, completely irrelevant answer. that's why i love you.

Did you catch the byline? Talk about traditional media's sour grapes towards bloggers.

The review was written by Sia Michel, former editor of Spin.

well, thing is, without all of the blogger support and interest, combined w/ a good Pfork review, this band would be exactly where it's been the last 4 years here in Minneapolis...

they're not even regarded as one of the better Twin Cities bands by most local music fans to be honest.

to say that blogs didn't help this band blow up is just silly.

if it weren't for blogs, where would bands like CYHSY and Oh No! Oh My! be?

blogspot needs to do away with anonymous posting. people will have to become more creative in their anonymity!

Not a very well written review by Sia. Not that I remember reading her reviews before, but the NYT standard is def not met with this piece. The blogger comments are tongue in cheek fo shizzle, but not entirely false.

no matter what they say
you are the reason
that I heard about this band
and i am glad, cause
i really enjoy their music
got to see them in philly at the fire - in front of 30 people
will see them tomorrow at the church in front of a few hundred
and then see them in chicago at the pitchfork fest in front of 1000's
so thanks

You have people who are professionally -trained writers/critics on one hand who review cds, then you have kids who sit at their computers at home and review cds. But for some reason -- people give more attention to the kids at home than the professional writers. Weird.

i care more about what Chris or plenty of the other well established (and even some not-so) bloggers have to say than what people who get PAID to write reviews have to say...

maybe that's just me...

Geez Louise, Anonymous #2. The kids-at-home-with-computers tack is a bit unfairly general. Certainly it isn't the polar opposite of "professionally trained writers."

Some bloggers are solid writers, if not professionally trained ones. They have, among other things, credentials with the New Yorker, the Boston Globe, or local journalism. Others have Ph.D.s from Harvard. And others are eighteen-year-olds picking their noses. But it isn't a monolithic lot.

Anonymous #1 and #2 Stuff it!!! You guys are probably "professionally trained" critics who get paid off to write a good review for Pete Yorn.

i couldn't agree more. when pitchfork mentions the bloggers, which is never when they should (ie in the TnT review, or anything else we've helped propel), it's always negative. "Those damned mp3 blogs" or "there are a bajillion of those damned things".... it's obvious that pitchfork and other media outlets are just protecting their base. they don't want people to start looking elsewhere for new, good music. how often does p-fork recommend a good band? not very often compared to how often we do, which is usually every day! blogs are real, bloggers know the scene better, sooner or later people are going to realize that. i mean...is it just us, or has everyone's hit meter been exponentially rising over the last 6 months? it's inevitable, that sooner or later, pitchfork and others will have to recognize the blogs as credible, substantial music sites.

I think everyone needs to take a step back here and check themselves (blogs and press). Both are equally important, one has more market saturation (press), the other guarantees more rapid success to a certain extent (blogs), but from an artists standpoint they're both needed to build a career. Quit this us vs. them bullshit and just accept that Blogs are geared for the music seekers and avid music fans, while mass press gears itself for the casual listeners who still don't know what Stereogum or G v. B is...

to put it crudely, Artist makes music, Artist puts music on website and tells friends, friends talk to friends who talk to blogs (or publicists) and music is written by blogs who are read by writers at bigger press outlets, once the story grows those writers write in the New York times then you hope Time magazine reads that... The masses need filters cause they're lazy....

The reason that the "kids at their computers" are gaining influence, and the "professionally trained writers" of the print media are losing it is primarily because the major print media is caught in the same dehabilitating cycle as traditional radio. It panders to the safe, least-common-denominator, and at the same time it is (perhaps inevitably) corrupted by their stable of advertisers. If you're bored some day, look through Rolling Stone or something similar.....notice how many of their CD reviews (gasp!)also happen to have ads placed by their record company somewhere in the magazine. Blogs also have an implicit advantage....we're not asking you to take our word for it. Read our review....then click the link and listen for yourself.

Would bloggers of both genders consider a man rule that pardons Ms. Michel's curious attack on consumer generated media because she's wicked smoove lookin', because everything in the world that will never be will always be something unless nothing becomes everything and more so than something?

Anonymous Merry Swankster said...

The correlation between and album advertisement, and a review in a magazine is not as evil as you make it. It’s a matter of timing. Magazines review new albums, and new albums get promoted.

Look I agree there is no point making it a blogs vs. print argument. Its silly. Blogs/Web media have an advantage because you are dealing with a multimedia venue that allows you to not only read opinions but to immediately listen to the reviewed work. Print cannot do this. But RS, SPIN, NME, etc, are music and lifestyle magazines. People pick up the magazine for a cover story and perhaps learn something about a new artist. Sure the blogs and P-Fork may have spotlighted the artist 5 months ago, but who cares? I think this discussion says more about the obsession to be "first on board" with a particular artist rather than the actual discovery of new artists.

That is stupid and childish and reeks of hipsterdom. If something is good its good. Imagine if the Beatles came of age in 2006. Would we be tired of them after 6 months?
