Here is the list of my favorite albums of 2006. Yeah, we know it's a little early, but we're admittedly weak-minded and we don't want our opinions tainted by reading the lists of all the cooler bloggers out there. It's okay if you want to point out how ridiculous my list is (how in the world could I leave off Cookie Mountain?) In fact, I encourage it, and you could probably convince me you're right. But these are the albums that affected me most this year, the ones I keep coming back to, the ones I encourage you to seek out, and most importantly, the albums I will remember 2006 by.
(Garrison Reid's list is included after the jump, because whether he admits it or not, he's pretty much a full-time member of gorilla vs. bear by now. And our girl and somewhat infrequent contributor Michelle also sent us her list, so that's here too.)

finally, kind of sad to see no love from anyone for the Man Man record. I know it came out early this year but there are all sorts of reasons that it will be in the top few of my mental lists this year.

Your list is great, but i'm upset Chris. You moved Ghost back on your list for Clipse to take a higher place. Okay, it's good, but come on. Ghost is in Shaolin and he is hurtin'. He gave US "9 Milli Bros." he deserves better. Really though i'm just playing. Great list and thank you for everything you have posted this year. Had a real impact on my list.

PLEASE READ AND RESPOND TO THIS!
Please explain to me the enfatuation hipsters like yourself have with hip/hop danceable music. Why is real rock taboo? No I don't mean top 40 crap like Nickelback or the million insincere Emo-Core bands that have come out recently. I'm thinking Pearl Jam (who's new album IS brilliant), Sparta, The Mars Volta, Past Silverchair albums (if you don't know, diorama and neon ballroom are superb), parts of Coheed & Cambria albums, System of a Down (yes!), Wolfmother, Underoath, Artic Monkeys, Idlewild, and even newer Incubus. It's either extremely mellow indie music, electro-pop or hip hop with you and your kind.
The rap albums you have listed are not that good. While I have been known to enjoy some gangsta rap, I would never put it on the same artistic level as some of the previous bands. Lil'Wayne and Ghostface Killah aren't that revolutionary. Again, I'm not saying it's not good, but seriously how many albums can we here about gunfire, selling rocks and bling before it finally becomes insincere and cliche? These rappers are not living that lifestyle anymore, and their inability to move on speaks to a lack of creativity or courage to be themselves and possibly lose street cred. If you want to praise anyone for their lyrics, I think you should consider Lupe Fiasco or about half of Kanye's work.
As for the more beat oriented hip hop acts, I can respect them a little more. I have Donuts and it's pretty good, not sure if it's in my top 10 of the year, but pretty good. Hell Hath No Fury just came out 5 days ago, it can't already be on your top 10 of the year, come on. It does have very creative beats and effects, but it suffers from the typical hip hop lyrical drivel. I respect the flowing skills, but talk about something real please. An album that has a song about how a girl's ass claps will never be in my top ten.
And it seems to me that artists that can play instruments should always get a little bit more respect than guys making songs on GarageBand. I mean I can do that. Doesn't the fact that 8 year olds are making songs that are getting buzz speak to the artistic simplicity and lack of talent required to get your kind talking? Sorry I forget the name of the little girl I'm referring to but you talked about her and then posted a national magazine or something's reference to you. Remember? I'm sorry.
If we want to talk creative experimental-ish stuff you have to consider The Mars Volta, Explosions in the Sky (I know, no album this year), Mew (Frengers and the kites one) and other similar bands. These bands are creative, pack a punch and move you.
While I don't think it should be the goal, the only album that really seems to be accessable is Midlake's The Trials of Van Occupanther. So much of the other stuff you just have to say to yourself "ok this is art, I must appreciate it". Well CSS makes you want to dance...badly, but still.
If nothing else, PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME: The appeal of Ratatat. It's simple, boring, unengaging instrumental music. I mean I don't hear it and hate it, but it doesn't move me in any way except maybe to change the song. This really isn't as much a criticism as a plea for you to explain this to me. Seriously, I want to know why so many pple like this band.
Again, I don't want to completely hate on you because I've discovered some good bands through you guys. And that Justin Timberlake/Clap your hands mix song helped me to discover that dancing isn't all that bad. I can now appreciate dance songs as art as well. I guess my overal point is that I feel your preferences are a little out of order and I wonder why. Yes I understand that preferences are in fact personal, so I can't hate too much. It just seems that all hipsters who make us feel like they are the authority on all things music like the same kind of music. I personally think that intellectuals can love rock too.
So your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to explain 1.) why you hate/disregard rock 2.) give so much credit to hip/hop rap 3.) EXPLAIN RATATAT!

Someone should explain subjectivity to our friend Michael. Music doesn't have be revolutionary or complex to be enjoyable. They based their list on what they most enjoyed listening to, not what had the most engaging chord progressions.

well first off, a lot of people like to dance. i think that DJing this year and seeing how different stuff affects a crowd had at least some small effect on my list, no question.
i don't hate or disregard "rock" at all. i think a lot of your arguments against hip hop are valid (not groundbreaking/inane lyrics, etc.) but they can be applied to some of the more straight-forward rock bands you mention too (wolfmother, pearl jam, sparta?). and honestly, what the clipse and ghostface are doing is far more interesting to me than anything Incubus has ever done. go see sunset rubdown or love is all or white denim play live before you accuse me of hating rock music.
as far as Ratatat goes, i think they're a very dividing band, a lot of people find them really boring, which i can understand. i personally think they have some fun songs.

How can anyone hate on SOAD? I mean yes they are very popular, but they have some very interesting lyrics and I personally disargree with their politics. Their music contains middle eastern, free form jazz, and obviously heavy metal influences. They are truely a talented and unique band. Don't hate on them just because you can buy their tshirt at Hot Topic.

also, I admitted that preferences are personal. that's why I said a couple times that I can't criticize too much. I just want to know why rock is taboo and why dance music is so important.
and still no one explains Ratatat to me. I believe it's one of those bands everyone's afraid to admit is just "eh" for fear of appearing dumb.

thanks for responding Chris. I respect your opinions and I guess seeing a band live can change your mind. I didn't think that highly of MuteMath till I saw them live.
Wolfmother - yeah they are a Jimi Hendrix copy without the great solos, but they still rock. I enjoy that occasionally
Sparta - his vocal delivery is pretty unique, even though I don't LOVE them
Pearl Jam - While they are pretty straight forward, they did kind of start (along with Nirvana) one of the largest musical movements of our time. So that's pretty revolutionary. And I'm not sure you can criticize his lyrics that much. I mean there may be a million other "hate my dad" bands out there now, but when he started it, it wasn't cliche and he doesn't really talk about that much now. Sorry I'm a little biased on this one. My favorite band of all time, so please bite your tongue if you hate them.
i've tried really hard to get into beach house but so far no dice. I think i'll go listen again.
i actually like pearl jam, especially Vs, and i think they're a really good live band. see, not a hipster.

gorilla vs. bear's Top 10 of 2006 . . . as translated by Eric Grubbs
10. Hot Chip, The Warning
Here's a band that rocked my face off even though they don't use the standard instruments that rock most faces off. Layers of keyboards, vocals and drumbeats go places. And when I mean places, they're not some swanky clubs that play house music.
9. Grizzly Bear, Yellow House
-Not to be confused with Austin's Golden Bear, Grizzly Bear reminds me of Jim O'Rourke's best solo material. This is laid-back, atmospheric, folky pop that doesn't put you to sleep.
8. Beach House, Beach House
-This duo's recent performance at the Amsterdam Bar blew the roof off. The deal is, there is no roof where the bands play, but whatever. This is some pretty, chamber-like stuff. Yes, this is another mellow record on my Top 10, but it's great.
7. Sunset Rubdown, Shut Up I Am Dreaming
-Let's get the Bowie comparison out of the way: yeah, the guy sings like mid-70s Bowie, but not in a tacky way. The scope of this record is like a twee pop record, but it doesn't feel like a twee pop record.
6. Ghostface Killah, Fishscale
-Furthering the puzzlement of fellow bloggers like The Berg and Eric of Theme Park Experience about the hipness of gangsta rap, this is a straight-up gem. His flow is still right on target and his lyrics are totally raw. Enough rappers talk about their chains, rims and false teeth; Ghostface tells it how all great gangsta rap tells it: it's the CNN of the ghetto.
5. Love Is All, Nine Times That Same Song
-You want some poppy rock that sounds alive? Here you go. Love is All feature some spectacular female vocals and really catchy guitar along with some tasty bells and whistles.
4. Clipse, Hell Hath No Fury
The record everybody has been waiting for, except for those who haven't or don't understand what's so great about these guys or gangsta rap in general. Not to be confused with the Coup, this is some more smart rap that blasts out of your speakers and opens your mind. Using non-traditional beats (like coins, steel drums, banging on steel walls) makes this even more appealing.
3. Joanna Newsom, Ys
-She's done it again! Joanna is my homegirl with a record that Joni Mitchell, Bjork and Fiona Apple would kill to make. Yes, this record could be considered an EP at only five songs, but these fifty-five minutes will hold you tight and knock your socks off.
2. Midlake, The Trials of Van Occupanther
-Denton band drops the Flaming Lips vibe for something that America and Fleetwood Mac did in the Seventies. With a one-two punch of "Roscoe" and "Bandits," this is a stellar little record of quiet beauty.
1. The Knife, Silent Shout
-This record sounds like it came out in 1986. This is all electronic with vintage sounds from dance music's past. It's a head-trip and it's my jam out of all the jams I heard this year. Don't ask me why, but it just jams my mind.

Matt! finally someone not afraid to admit that Cookie Mountain isn't their thing. A friend of mine sent me a couple songs (Wolf Like Me, and another) and I actually grew to love them. But then I listend to the album and I didn't like it. Maybe it's so odd that you have to listen to it a lot, but I just wasn't feeling it.
yeah berg, i listened to it a few times and never saw anything to amazing in it, so i just forgot about it and moved on.

great list, but Cookie Mountain is definitely a great album in my opinion, i also rate destroyer and aloha very highly, biggest omission-annuals, but hey its just different opinions
ghostface is so over-rated it makes me gag. Lif's record (Mo Mega) is 100 million times better! Also, no TVOR? C'mon! No Cat Power, Professor Murder?
two points Eric:
1. my criticism of Hell Hath No Fury is not with the beats or instrumentals which are extremely creative, but with the lyrics. Again I will say, any song about a girl's ass clapping will not make my top 10.
2. so Ghostface is the CNN of the ghetto...hmmm...maybe. I guess that's possible BUT even though he may not have Puffy or Jay Z money, I'm sure he's not living in those neighborhoods anymore. I doubt he has for the last 15 years or so. So isn't he just rapping about past experiences and perpetuating destructive behaviors?
Look again I will say, I like both of these albums! I just don't see much value in them lyrically aside from the all inclusive "personal expression". I will defend an artists right to say whatever they want till my death BUT because I feel these kinds of lyrics perpetuate habits that hurt the black community, I cannot personally look at these pieces of work and deem them top 10 worthy.
If you think so, fine but please don't assume that I'm might be puzzled as to what's hip. Although reading that comment again just makes me realize how unimportant it is to be hip.
p.s.-I also find it a little "puzzling" that you emphatically agreed with every single thing Chris said. maybe just a weird coincidence.
Where are The Roots?? In my opinion they made the hip-hop album of the year.
uh, The Berg, you must not have listened to the Clipse Cd because their lines are pure poetry. The metaphors make this English major's jaw drop. "They called it crack, I called it diet coke". Are you serious? That is AMAZING and is just one of about 1,000. Yes, they are rapping about coke, like so many others, but they do it with wordplay that is INSANE. "Hurry the 'cane like I'm Miami U"? You don't find that anywhere else. PS, Incubus is about as cool as cancer, and their music is even worse. Coheed and Cambria? So you like music that has the dude from Rush singing about Dungeons and Dragons shit? I'll take ANY coke rapping over that lame junk. What is that? The CNN of nerds in the basement reading sci-fi and playing magic the gathering?

Incubus is not the most lyrically clever band, in fact a couple years ago I skoffed at them. But the last six months or so I've been in the mood for no frills non gimmicky rock, they satisfy that hunger. They have a very rich, semi-creative rock sound that's actually rock and not just indie pretending. I'm not trying to champion Incubus at all, they're not even in my top 25 artists of right now. It was just an example of decent real rock.
Coheed does sing about some geeky stuff at times I admit. But at the very least it's not rehatched cliches and empty boasting like most of rap. Honestly the reason I listen to Coheed is because their music is so theatrical and it rocks. It's like a rock opera, it tells a story, even if that story is deemed by others as geeky. And honestly I think less of their music is actually about geeky stuff than you think. You're just assuming that because they also have a comic book.
I will concede that I haven't agonized over the lyrical content of Clipse, but then again the album came out 5 DAYS AGO! geez.
Berg, some clarification: I wrote my list according to what I thought Chris would say about these records. Remember, this was a translation with my tongue planted firmly in cheek but also understanding what he likes about these artists.
As far as the 5 days ago comment, I have poured over the lyrics because i downloaded most songs several weeks ago. And the "diet coke" metaphor/pun is the only i can think of right now. Oh wait (and forgive the anti-semitism): "I heat up till it turn blue-ish/into a tight wad that Pyrex is Jewish". I mean, seriously, AMAZING. Maybe you don't realize how people can say this is a best-of in 5 days b/c you don't realize a LOT of people have been waiting on this and downlaoded parts a long time ago. I will give you the ass-clap stuff in a heart beat, but that is in the minority. Oh and: "I'm more in touch with the keys/move over Alicia". Those are lyrics NO ONE ELSE will come up with. But, I am totally with you on Ghostface he is so overrated. 9 Milli Bros., a reunion of the Wu and the wekaest, most boring beat EVER? He is a case of bloggers just following other bloggers.

This comes up every year, but I wanted Love Is All on my top 5 til I realised it was originally a 2005 release.

i like that part where that anonymous guy apologizes for a anti-semitic lyric in the song, only to call it "amazing" later in the same sentence. and those couplets he quoted have to be the worst examples of hip hop poetry i've ever heard. i too occasionally enjoy semi-creative cliche rock that has been released in the past half decade too, berg. but i file that stuff under "guilty pleaasure", not "top ten albums of 2006".

yes I admit that I didn't do a great job of listing bands that are both rock/and actually great, but it was kind of an off the top of my head kinda thing. I will bring up that about half of the bands I listed weren't criticized, so I still made at least a halfway decent point.

Clipse is on some metaphysical shit. Compare "Ride Around Shining" ("all I wanna do is ride around shining while I can afford it") to the book of Ecclesiastes ("man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry"). Seriously, there's a lot of psychological/philosophical stuff here that you don't hear on every album. But it's not Arrested Development, either (thank God).
The whole album is great. No skits. No fat. And the beats could be more revolutionary than you think. They're as dirty as dirty south gets, but w/Kanye-like accessibility.
Re: Ratatat - I agree with you. I can listen to a song here and there, but too much of it makes me feel like I'm in an elevator or rocking the Sega Genesis.

1st - Beast Moans, as a whole, I could never get into. However I really liked Spencer's tracks and The Freedom (dan)
2nd - Surprised lots of good albums were nowhere to be found on these lists (not my top 10, just good records i'd expect to be on SOMEONE'S list)

every band mentioned on these 2006 "best of" lists is indeed interesting, but none are memorable. how many of these albums have you listened to repeatedly and actually enjoyed for the music, not the "cool" factor? (this is especially true with the 2006 dance (not dance) entries of "hot chip", "the knife", etc.)
i buy lots of albums based on word of mouth and these types of goofy lists. this year, though, i have to admit that i am left me with the impression that i've wasted a lot of money.
i find myself revisiting midlake, the figurines, the hold steady, and belle and sebastian, but just can't get into the "hip" albums i am "supposed" to like. fact is, sunset rubdown, the islands, and band of horses are no wolf parade, cyhsy, or my morning jacket.
i guess, all i'm trying to say is this .. if 2006 was truly a crappy year in music, would anyone admit it or does doing so make you uncool? if so, i'll risk being uncool by saying 2205 was way better.

The fact that you can, without conscience, heap (well-deserved) praise on the lyricism of Clipse and, in the same breath, dismiss Ghostface as "overrated" is mind-blowing-- a clear indication that you (and, for that matter, the other parties involved in this 'discussion') have no clue. As a Clipse fan, as a hip-hop patron, as one of those who've ever heard at least 10seconds of a Ghostface verse, I'm a offended. It's also funny that, out of these 2 acts, you should characterize GHOSTFACE as the one who's been overhyped by bloggers! If you were prompted to download pre-release Clipse tracks by anything other than the internet, I will eat the jewel case the CD came in.

I haven't heard the Girl Talk record yet. I was intrigued and had moderate expectations. But, "Bounce That" sounds like Jock Jams after southern rap blew up. I'm less than ecstatic and more than a little concerned about what constitutes good djing in the age of the white/hipster/protools/hip-hop co-opting set.

well to tell you the truth, youre whole explanation is valid from a one sided point of view. but for you to blatantly create this line of division in music is simply unneccecary. personally i am no into the typical mainstream music that is hardly innovative. but the fact of the matter is that having music of all types (esspecially the mainstream) is what makes all other music that you love more appreciated, for it provides somewhat of an example of what not to do in music.
