a charlie brown christmas

Thanks to Aquarium Drunkard for pointing out that the brand new reissue of Vince Guaraldi's classic A Charlie Brown Christmas (my favorite holiday album of all time) is now available for download on eMusic. We watched the TV special last night and were reminded just how warm and nostalgic (in a good way) Guaraldi's soundtrack makes us feel every holiday season. The reissue comes complete with 4 bonus tracks, and we can't recommend it enough for your holiday listening needs. Download it now with your 25 Free Download Trial offer.

Vince Guaraldi Trio Linus and Lucy mp3

If you need help using the rest of your 25 free downloads, we recommend our favorite EP of 2006, Sparrow House's Falls, also brand new on eMusic.

elsewhere:

Beautiful photos/review of Peter and the Wolf's Salt Lake City show.

After the jump, we take issue with an article that appeared in the Calendar Live section of Sunday morning's LA Times. The article, entitled "Buzz Vertigo," addresses the issue of the "non-stop spin cycle" of pop music's "blog hype machine." There are some specific quotes from the article that we have a problem with, but before you read on, I'll let you know that most of you probably won't care about this. Further, I'm a little under the weather, so I'll warn you now that this little rant will likely be disjointed, uneven, and probably even boring. So don't tell me about it in the comments, k? Continue reading...

"Bands such as Birdmonster, Cold War Kids and Sound Team are relentlessly marketed to bloggers, just this never-ending stream of e-mails from flacks. It's depressing that all you need to catch on among the newer MP3 blogs is to barrage them with PR emails."
--Matthew Perpetua, Fluxblog

Okay, I like Fluxblog, he's a nice guy and he runs a truly great blog and all that, but this irks me to no end. The blanket insinuation made by Perpetua that all "newer mp3 blogs" are PR lackeys is insulting, not only to the newer bloggers, but to anyone who reads them and might actually like Birdmonster, Cold War Kids, and Sound Team. Yeah, we get it, Perpetua's a pioneer, he invented the internet, his is the only opinion that matters, whatever. But his comments reek of someone trying to assert his relative importance and relevance over people he thinks he's smarter than. Also, he's been known to get irritatingly smug and even gleeful when a band he deems "uncool" gets a low Pitchfork rating, so take that for what it's worth.

*******************************

"Are blogs really an independent medium to express a voice? It's hard to know what's genuine, or what is being paid for."
--anonymous publicist

"But bloggers don't always mention the extent to which they are comped and courted. About two years ago, I started noticing quotes from blogs on publicity one-sheets. All of a sudden, indie labels were like, 'This is our press.'"--Glenn Peoples of Coolfer

There's a real simple remedy to this one: if at any point you suspect that a blogger is allowing anything other than personal taste to dictate their content, stop reading their blog. I can only speak for myself, but I'll admit that it can be frustrating when my enthusiasm or love for a band is misinterpreted. I'm never intentionally attempting to generate superficial "buzz" for what I write about on this blog, or in any way trying to establish myself as some kind of tastemaker, and I would wager that most bloggers feel the same way. If at any point you feel my (or any other blogger's) enthusiasm is manufactured or somehow insincere, please stop reading.

*******************************

"At one time you had Creem and Crawdaddy and Rolling Stone; now you have MySpace and Pitchfork and blogs like Gorilla vs. Bear..."
--Andy Slater, President of Capitol Records

Sorry, had to throw this one in there. Because we all know that I started this blog so that I would one day be name-checked by the President of Capitol Records. How else to explain the incessant posts about the Detroit Tigers or that time I live-blogged the Pistons playoff run?

Fluxblog is a terribly annoying blog anyways.. who cares. That guy is a douche.

In the beginning was Fluxjob(*).

Fluxjob looked down from his perch upon Mt. Olympblog at all the lowly Mortals and laughed, "I was here first! Suck it suckers!"

He said this with great pomposity and reminded everyone of this fact daily. And yet, despite the glorified praise heaped upon him from the altars of The Press, the lowly Mortals simply did not care. From his throne he repeatedly muttered under his breath, "No matter how low you go, there's always lower. No matter how low you go, there's always lower." And then louder: "BOW DOWN you worms! Get on your bellies and worship your blogGOD!" (**)

But still, no one cared.

I don't get what specifically he's trying to say in that article.. The opinions of individuals writing about music they like does not necessarily entail that the music will be loved by everybody and become widely succesful? It's harder reading about new music from loads of sources instead of just a couple? Pretty perceptive stuff.

That wasn't the only problem with that article. Did you catch the opening paragraph:

TAPES 'N TAPES. Beirut. TV on the Radio. Cold War Kids. Lupe Fiasco. Lily Allen. Birdmonster. Grizzly Bear. Sufjan Stevens. TV on the Radio. The Knife. Clipse. Destroyer. The Hold Steady. Joanna Newsom. These are, by a certain measure, the most important new musicians of 2006."

Uh...TV on the Radio? 2006? This was their second LP, not to mention Young Liars and New Health Rock. Sufjan? Wasn't Avalanche his 6th album? Clipse-2nd album (not counting the mixtapes). Destroyer is a new artist? That's news to me. The Hold Steady? Joanna Newsom? That's just shoddy journalism. I can't believe a professional music critic would call the Hold Steady new. Craig Finn is practically 40.

And that's just in the first graph. Don't worry, no one is taking that stuff seriously. Keep up the good work.

Fans of Scrubs should definitely check out their version of the Charlie Brown special:

PS - Dodge's invention of "Fluxjob" is pretty much the best blogger nickname around.

jesus, come on , Honestly I think fluxblog has SHIT taste, but don't rag on him for being fat. That's just bad form.

That said, his blog is old news. It holds no clout, it's just old , uneductated journalists that refer to him as a "pioneer" when really he's not really doing much these days but creaming over the Fiery Furnaces

Honestly I don't think anyone really reads or cares about that blog anymore

but lay off his weight!
(from a thin dude, who just thinks it's fucked up to rag on someone because they are fat, but then again they could go on a diet I guess....hmmmmm)

ok, no offense (ok, maybe some), just look at your blog--it's littered with ads and you're saying you don't succumb to this commercialization blah blah. that's a bit hypocritical. no other blog i read takes this long to load (go ahead, make a joke about my shoddy net connection).

(but your content still kicks ass)

I'm wounded about this topic, you say that don't read if you find anything hypocritical in blogs, but!, i try to write about music with my whole heart and you know, people read those hypocritical... Maybe it's not right to speak ill of a colleague but the truth is the mean of life.

If you want be honest, then be ready for the loneliness, and also there are those anonymous persons! if you think that you're right about something so why don't you use a name at least? Let me say, you're cowardly.

Finally, "It's hard to know what's genuine, or what is being paid for." that's the truth!
Please don't blame anybody before you're sure.

I recommend getting the original version of the Charlie Brown Christmas album.

The remastered version has a different version of "Linus & Lucy" - which is probably the signature song of the album - and the original master sounds better.

sounds like Fluxblog was naming the exact bands that p4k bashes and you've been touting. kind of a jerk move, actually, and an inaccurate one considering I don't think any of those bands are working with PR folks. i certainly never got any e-mails.

the whole OMG BLOGGERZ ARE BEING PAYED OFF thing should've ended back in like, '03 or whatever when that whole Secret Machines debacle happened. This is about the least interesting aspect of music blogging you could possibly write about.
