Joanna Newsom: Live in Oklahoma

I decided somewhere around 2 a.m., on the drive back to Dallas from Norman, OK, that last night's Joanna Newsom show at Meachum Auditorium was hands down the best show I've seen all year. I'll elaborate when I post my "Best Shows of 2006" list later this week, but a quick recap: Joanna played Ys in its entirety, and her 5-piece band did a remarkable job of interpreting the lush and elaborate orchestration present on the record. She began the show alone on her harp, and I shot this video of Ms. Newsom singing what she identified only as "an old Scottish song." (I believe the song is a traditional Scottish hymn entitled "Ca' the Yowes") Breathtaking song, and it may even appeal to those of you who can't get into Joanna's unique voice:

i gotta say. I'm really really REALLY anti Ys, like it may be one of the most pretentious annoying albums i've heard in ages, however, that cover that you filmed, was indeed something that finally melted by brick of distaste for her. If only her songs could be THAT pretty...that was very lovely indeed.

As a musician, I can't deny I'm extremely jealous of her being able to play to such a silent/attentive crowd.

I guess when you have enough fans/buzz/fanatics around you like her /sufjan, people don't DARE utter a word

If only people were that respectful at all shows

i agree wholeheatedly, the show was absolutely fantastic. in fact, i preferred the intimacy of the 6 piece over the orchestral album version, and her adaption to the more obscure instruments was stellar, especially in cosmia.

I like the way that band play the Ys songs a lot more than the way they are on the album - anyone agree with me? The dynamics and energy come through much clearer when they're freed up from all those sludgy strings (plus they play them a bit quicker.. the tempos are so slow on the record). Thanks for sharing your video G vs B, it's a pretty tune, I don't know if it's one of the best things she's done but it's nice anyway. 'Anonymous', if Ys is the only thing you've heard by her, check out her first album, most of it is much more like this cover song.

Her record's quite an achievement.

These photos hath captured her in an extraordinary light.

Life sometimes sneaks up on you and whispers a kindred nothing in the ear of God, and the indulgent revelry of the angel children deliver the perfection of the sky, and everyone's own sun is, how do you say in American country, born.

The sun is born.

I am little concerned over this indie fetish for Joanna Newsom... but I guess if an artist was "good looking" then they wouldn't be "indie"

darius, i'm a little concerned that you're so concerned. plus i have no idea what you're talking about.

oh this post has gotten me extremely anxious! seeing her tonight in an EXTREMELY intimate setting. should be very interesting, and hopefully as fantastic as you described it! thanks!

Last night's show was definitely a high point (of quite a few things, show-of-the-year among them). I tried to tape Ca' the Yowes as well, but this version is vastly superior. Thanks for making it available for repeat listenings.

If anyone doesn't get to see Joanna this tour, here's pretty great video of her entire concert in Philadelphia.
Long download, but totally worth it.

Last night was amazing. I was feeling a little choked up during Sawdust and Diamonds. Best show of the year by far. And, yes, Darius, what the hell are you talking about?

Hey - I am a regular reader of this blog, but feel it is slipping into so-so-ville...

Newsom (in my opinion) is dull and boring, her voice is shocking and she has no appeal to 97% of people, except the so-called indie-elite.

Further, it is clear that this blog is heading far too much toward stupid rap and hip-hop culture and reviews of artists who don't deserve the credit they receive.

Go on, now's your chance to reply with "Anonymous" comments, slagging me off...I'm (not) waiting.

I hope 2007 sees this blog return to where it was when I first jumped on board.

if you think Newsom is "dull and boring" and hip hop culture is "stupid," maybe it's best if we part ways now. we had a good run, anonymous.

p.s. my four-year old niece likes Joanna Newsom, and she is not (as far as I know) part of the "indie-elite."

Saw her a couple nights ago here in Madison, the show itself was fantastic all the events and hoopla leading up to it was a different story....

How long of a drive is that from Ok to TX?

Assuming that you are not simply trolling, I'll submit that you are using the incorrect criterion, anonymous. There are certain artists who create new avenues by which art grows. Look at Stravinsky. Plenty of people hate those screeching violins, yet his mark on music in enriching rhythmic, harmonic, and textural complexity is indelible. I believe Joanna is in that league, within the type of music she represents. If you want to label folks like me as elitist, fine. I have ears and a brain and use them.

I know what darius is talking about

I PROMISE YOU
if joanna was ugly , 32 years old and fat and not on Drag City, not NEARLY as many people would be fawning over her music
even if it was exactly the same

anyone that denies that is lying to themselves

her cuteness IS part of the appeal

6:28 PM
Anonymous Richie said...

So what? If say, Interpol, were old and fat and ugly, less people would like them. Same with Jeff Buckley. You can apply that to just about anyone whose good looks form some part of their appeal. And there are a lot of musicians who are very good looking that nobody listens to, because their music does nothing for anyone.

If she was an 80 year old baglady pushing a grocery store cart, I'd follow her around on my skateboard taking notes. Her music touches me deeply, and traveling to this show was like making a pilgrimage to the Oracle at Delphi; enlightening, cryptic, cathartic... and a genuine humbling experience.
Thanks for sharing the video. Glad all the Texas kids made it home safe!

joanna newsom is a unique artist and i can not understand why people find anything wrong with her voice, if i am a member of this "indie-elite", whatever that is, then i'm happy to be there.
i was happy to read a great review of her show as i'm seeing her in january, so now i'm doubly excited

Chris, what's up with 4 year olds digging Joanna? My son of the same age is gaga for "Bridges and Balloons". He's also got a soft spot for "Cosmia" off the latest one.

her show in Philly was amazing as well. I need to download that video up the comment ladder.

Sorry, but I have to agree a little with some of the naysayers.

I know she is pushing the boundaries quite considerably - popular harp music? how the hell did she manage that! - and I'd much prefer that to another identikit guitar pop band pretending to be different, but honestly I just don't like her stuff very much at all.

I even like a lot of the very folk-influenced stuff around at the moment from Isobel Campbell, to the likes of Beirut, A Hawk and a Hacksaw, and Andrew Bird all the way through to some of the more old school folk-pop like The Pogues and Fairport and so on, but I just can't get into Ys at all.

I'm not saying it's shit, I just really don't like it especially.

Holy Frijoles, I never would have imagined such controversy over such an innocent little artist. I could call it jealousy, but whatever, I don't know.

I heard Peach, Plum, Pear and liked it a whole lot. I got Milk-Eyed Mender and fell in love. It was only THEN that I found out she was this darling little woman. Believe it or fucking not, some people actually listen to music to HEAR IT!

Regardless of self-loathing assmongers, I would have to say that I can't really get into Ys and I think it's the gigantic songs. Sorry, I need some level of consiseness. I need another listen though to see if I can fall into it.

Joanna's talent and music has totally changed my outlook.. on everything. It seems like i've been waiting on her and i came across her quite unusually, it was meant to be. Sometimes the music finds you.

I've sort of worked backwards, started with Ys, which grabbed me straight off from the first line, then to The Milk-Eyed Mender, then to her 2 self-released EP's.. she's come on leaps and bounds in the last few years since her first EP (which is beautiful).

'Ys' is a masterpiece in my opinion. I really don't need to explain why, i probably couldn't, my vocabulary doesn't stretch to the same pastures as hers.

She's undeniably beautiful, which i guess is part of the "appeal" towards her but not her music. Her music isn't the type of music you can grow to like based on appeal, it's marmite, you either love it or loath it.. if you love it you think back and wonder how on earth you could have lived without it and consider yourself lucky that it found you.

She'll go very far, i'm not sure how she will follow Ys but i do know that can, somehow.

I can't wait to see her at the Royal Albert Hall!

They will miss the Metin2 gold and they will try their best to play this game to get the joy. As long as they earn the Metin2 yang they will be happy and they think the game is very interesting. Of course they have to have a lot of Cheap metin2 gold by themselves. Sure, that process of achieving will have its unpleasant and disagreeable aspects.I am lonely so I play the game and Buy metin2 gold to give my friends. They also give me a lot of Cheap metin2 yang while playing the game.
