Here's the latest installment in our ongoing obsession with Panda Bear's new material. We're thinking of making this a regular weekly column*:
Panda Bear
I've been listening to this amazing Portuguese radio session that Panda Bear recorded earlier this month nearly as much as I've been listening to Person Pitch. This song, which Noah says he hasn't named yet, is a reverberated Motown shuffle, complete with afro-soul melodies buried in a densely percussive wall of rumbling, dub-inflected beats. This is newer than the Person Pitch material, so it won't appear on the record, but it's amazing nonetheless:

i still think that the first animal collective album (recorded as avey tare and panda bear) is the best of the a.c. stuff. the panda bear sound on person pitch seems like it's going back to that and then improving upon it.
i'm amazed that no one has mentioned how bad (or at least mediocre) the first panda bear solo album is...
Light years ahead of Young Prayer, though the context of that album is a good explanation for its sound.
Too bad we, the unfortunate souls without promotional copies, have to wait until March to hear the complete album.

I'd venture to say that people haven't really ever heard music like this. Maybe they're stoked on the fact that this really wonderful music is so palatable and endlessly giving. Which it is, cheesy as that may sound.
The tunes are more aligned, I think, with what people have had on the tips of their tongues for some time. It's something we, they (not you, apparently) have been wanting to hear, whether or not they necessarily knew it.

I haven't really got into Animal Collective yet, but this new Panda Bear album is one of the most euphoric, melodic things I've heard in ages. "Caterwalling over a bunch of loops and atmospherics" my arse. And Kevin Shields knew that vagueness in music is sometimes a great thing.
I can't wait until the album is released, or at least leaked. Even though I've searched pretty much every last corner of the internet, I still only have the first half of the album. But that half sure does sound amazing.
