the naked and alone
We've been fans of Apostle of Hustle since we saw them perform their hypnotic live set a couple years back at SXSW (in an Urban Outfitters, no less), but this new record is threatening to take our love for the BSS-ers to a new level. The whole of National Anthem of Nowhere (out Feb. 6) is an adventure in listening which, according to the label, ranges from "intimate minor-key mood music" to "flourishing interstellar guitar jams." The band's myspace page claims the new record contains the following:
"g.garica marquez, pulp nonfiction, perverts, sailors, conmen, heartbreak, minor keys, caja, supernatural forces, bobby darin, pentecostal freaks, revolutionary sentiments, ponies, jimmy scott, broken pieces of glass and bricks, cello, beats, tres, baritone guitar, duende, and not that many contemporary cultural signifiers..."
Yeah, I'd say that's pretty accurate. This track falls in there somewhere, I'm sure, and it's up there with the band's best work to date:
