The new Voxtrot LP (due out in May) is apparently the topic of message boards all across the internet, and the first wave of knee-jerk reactions seem to be split right down the middle. We're obviously reserving judgement until we've heard the whole album, but our initial thoughts are that we really dig the first official mp3:

cool buildup there at the end. Not bad at all.
this is undercooked and dull. it's shockingly not that exciting, which is frustrating because voxtrot's better than this.
dammit. hopes dashed - i pray this does not well represent the new album....

I am torn by ethics of whether or not to download this for I love voxtrot very much and as we all know the album has been leaked, which is equally frustrating...it's not even close to May 22nd!
I think Beggars should do what Fat Possum did for Andrew Bird, picking one song and giving it to bloggers so no one is tempted to unveil the whole album to the internet or is that exactly what they did with "Kid Gloves"?

anne, to answer your question, it's not the first single, technically, but it is the official mp3 that Beggars has made available free/legally, like the Andrew Bird song you mentioned. if you look at the URL of the song, you'll see it's hosted on the Beggars website.
yeah... a few great tracks on the LP (Firecracker is tops), but a few notches below the first 2 EP's (especially MSDW)
the album had way WAY more potential, and unfortunately has fallen short.
ah well, still love them though.
it's not like it's bad, just more like a 7-7.5, when i'd hoped for like an 8.5-9 type record based on their earlier stuff.
also, Real Life Version is destined for the season finale of Grey's Anatomy... not that it's a bad song, just sayin'
I'm pretty happy with the album as a whole. All the songs hold up, they're more complex than the previous EP's, and I like that the band is expanding their musical horizons. It's a little darker and less dance-able than Raised By Wolves, and still less pop-y than Mothers &tc, but I've found myself listening to it quite a lot these past few days... would anyone really be happy with another 11 songs that sound like The Start of Something?
as to leakage, just because I have the mp3's now, it doesn't mean I won't be first in line to support the band and get my hands on the artwork. You take, you give.

one of my bigger complaints of the full length (besides the low energy of it on the whole), is Ramesh's vocals sound really whispery (see: Ghost for one) and just too low in the mix often.
I'm sorry this is my third comment on this post! but goodness, this song is AMAZING. they somehow found a way to keep some dance vibes and branch off too. more leaning towards their smiths reference now instead of belle and sebastian, it also sounds more like what they sound like they do live.
it is more darker, kind of like "Missing Pieces" and more edge in his vocals. I also love the beginning "uh-uh"s, very british/european for some reason.
I remember hearing this at the kork showcase, talk about catchy! more excited than ever for their album. thank you chris for this!

this is god awful
kid gloves is substantial. it makes sense that with such frontloaded EPs, the album would disappoint slightly, but from what i've heard it's still solid overall. i'm looking forward to seeing them live.

Y'all may not like what Voxtrot has done for this album from what you've heard, but as Ramesh said in the article, "I suppose, all you can do is make up your mind to ignore external opinion and continue to make music that you think is important and relevant."
