gorilla vs. bear's top 25 hip-hop albums of all time

Inspired by Passion of the Weiss' call to arms (via email, of course) to compile a bloggers' list of the top 25 hip-hop albums of all time, here is my list. As usual, these are just my personal favorites, as opposed to a critical "best of" list. My list is influenced by my age as much as anything, as many of these are painfully obvious choices for a kid who started getting into hip-hop in the late '80s/early '90s. In fact, the majority of the albums on my list--and all of my top 10--were released between 1989-2000.

*******************************

25. Method Man--Tical (1994)
24. Clipse--Lord Willin' (2002)
23. De La Soul--Stakes Is High (1996)
22. Mos Def + Talib Kweli--Black Star (1998)
21. Beastie Boys--Paul's Boutique (1989)
20. Ol' Dirty Bastard--Nigga Please (1999)
19. Dr. Octagon--Dr. Octagonecologyst (1997)
18. Madvillain--Madvillainy (2004)
17. Camp Lo--Uptown Saturday Night (1997)
16. Deltron--Deltron 3030 (2000)
15. A Tribe Called Quest--The Low End Theory (1991)
14. Nas--Illmatic (1994)
13. The Streets--A Grand Don't Come For Free (2004)
12. Dr. Dre--The Chronic (1992)
11. Notorious B.I.G.--Ready To Die (1994)

The Top 10:

10. Public Enemy--Fear of a Black Planet (1990)

9. Ghostface--Supreme Clientele (2000)

8. Raekwon--Only Built 4 Cuban Linx (1995)

7. The Pharcyde--Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde (1992)

6. De La Soul--3 Feet High and Rising (1989)

As a 12 year old kid whose hip-hop knowledge was limited to Licensed To Ill and a little Run DMC at this point, I'm not ashamed to admit that it was the videos from 3 Feet High... that made me fall in love with hip-hop.

5. Outkast--Aquemini (1998)

I liked Outkast before this record came out, but Aquemini just blew me away. A huge step forward (both sonically and lyrically) from ATLiens, this nearly flawless record established Dre and Big Boi as one of the best hip hop acts of all time.

**********************************

4. GZA--Liquid Swords (1995)

The darkest, bleakest album I'd ever heard, Liquid Swords featured some incredible guest turns, and RZA's production at its peak. I'm not sure how they're going to re-create this thing at the Pitchfork Festival, but I can't wait to see them try.

**********************************

3. Wu Tang--Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers (1993)

This one is self-explanatory. One of the most influential albums ever, and I don't think this left my 1986 Honda Accord's sweet 3-disc CD changer for over 2 years.

**********************************

2. A Tribe Called Quest--Midnight Marauders (1993)

While Low End Theory generally receives all the critical props, you can't convince me it's a better record. This is arguably my most listened to album of all time.

**********************************

1. Digable Planets--Blowout Comb (1994)

Blowout Comb alienated the majority of casual DP fans who were expecting more of the hippie/happy cosmic vibes of Reachin'. This record was too black and too militant, and as a result, it relegated the Digable Planets to one-hit wonder status in the mainstream. Which is unfortunate, because this is one of the best albums ever.

Nice list, but not complete without something, anything from DefJux. RJD2's Deadringer, Aesop Rock's Labor Days perhaps?

I'd also have had Jurassic Five, Blackalicious and The Roots in there. But there's the problem with lists - no one agrees.

Even though it's really recent, I'd put Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor on the list.

Chris, Besides age, how much has the places you've lived/visited influenced your taste in hip-hop (if at all)?

very interesting list... i like blowout comb at number one.. for me, reachin' had more straight-up classics.. but i can def. respect this choice

Hell Yes!!

As I got toward the bottom of the list all I could think of was, "no Midnight Marauders and no Blowout Comb?" To my surprise, there they were, in all of their glory at 1 & 2. Though I might put MM at 1 and BC at 2, still a beautiful list. Also I like PE's Fear of a black planet at 10, it's by far their best.

Well done! I have no complaints. So glad to see Blowout Comb at the top. I feel like it's one of the most overlooked albums of all time. Their live show supporting that record was brilliant as well. I'd have Fear of a Black Planet up at #2, but again, no complaints...

my list would be pretty similar to yours - a testament to my age (probably same as yours) and to the fact that I'm not very hip to hip hop any more...

Glad to see that Camp Lo record on your list. That was just a brilliant album. Too bad they dissolved into nothing.

The Streets album was complete rubbish and Fear of a Black Planet should be ranked higher, but I'd say that's a good list overall.

Yo, you got so famous. Not sure if I've been reading/downloading longer than The Guardian but I appreciate your frequent posts.
Good list, I could never do one!
Also, thanks for your influential contribution to my blog www.certifiedbanger.blogspot.com !

Surely Queen Latifah or MC Lyte deserves to be here.

Plus, no Ice-T (OG Original Gangster) or Ice Cube (The Predator)?

Your lack of refreshing beverages and the object that keeps them cold stuns me.

classic list. Can't argue with any one of your choices. I should've had 3 Feet High...on my own. i have no defense against its non-inclusion.

thanks for the comments guys. enjoyed your list too, K. nice work.

hey aj, why doesn't ladybug count? she's one of my favorite MCs ever, and a huge part of why blowout comb is number one on my list.

and Adam, good call w/ "The Predator." i used to love that album, but i honestly haven't listened to it in years.

Where is the N.W.A. and DJ Quik? Good list, but maybe a little too much East Coast hip hop for me.

i'm surprised there are no comments yet about the lack of west coast biz on there....(the chronic and perhaps you can count del...)

i do think that's one of the interesting things about hip-hop....regionalism...

you weren't even allowed to start junior high in my city without knowing every NWA song by heart....not to mention ice cube and related projects....

then of course there is 2pac (who i've never been a big fan of---but was unavoidable growing up)...

however: enlightening list and comments...always interesting to see what other people think...

and: i'm always shocked when people like deltron more than no need for alarm.......tuh-may-toe / tuh-mah-toe

2:38 PM
Blogger Chris said...

for the record, i did listen to a ton of west coast stuff growing up (dre, early snoop, NWA, cube, eazy-e, too short, etc.)

but to be honest, i just don't listen to much of it anymore. i guess i just feel like some of that stuff sounds really dated. i still like a lot of it, just not enough to be in my favorite 25.

i'd figure a good texas boy like you would at least give a little love to UGK's "Ridin' Dirty." Otherwise, beautiful list.

that's a good list except I would've included ugly duckling, journey to anywhere (alas they will always be the unsung heros.) I'd a traded pauls boutique with enter the wutang, and rocked it takes a nation of millions over fear of a black planet. Tha's jus me though. Keep it up, yo!

solid list Chris... makes me want to go back and revisit a few of these.

However, if I was making a top 25 like this, I might have done two things differently:

1. Put Madvillainy up higher on the list. Its probably risky putting a relatively new record so high on an "all time" list, but it would have been in my top ten for sure. I think its the best hip hop album of this decade so far.

2. I would have put a Streets record up there too, but it probably would have been Original Pirate Material... I just think its far superior to his other two records. But that might just be me.

adam, i honestly thought about putting UGK's hard to swallow on there. "tell me something good" was my jam.

SR, i agree that madvillainy is totally worthy of being in the top 10. i originally had it higher, but coincidentally i switched that and a grand don't come for free, mostly because i listen to the streets record more often. i just love how Skinner was able to turn a generic idea (concept album about a day in his life) into such a compelling narrative.

i totally agree with you on blowout and midnight marauders. i've been trying to tell people those two albums are most definitely top 5 material for years. the dusty, scratchy sound of blowout comb floored me, i listened to that shit exclusively for months on end.

if i made a pist i'd find a place for hell hath no fury. i'm sayign that's the best hiphop album that's been released in at least 5 years.

and dood, get back to me with an address so i can send you some beer already!

Proof that you can't keep a good idea down - Poisonous Paragraphs just kicked off a Top 25 hip hop list as well. Check it here:

Poisonous Paragraphs All-Time Top 25

My man Dart is bringing serious knowledge and it has a nice sample of the 80's stuff you didn't squeeze in your list and a kick ass "honourable mentions". Top 'state of yo" blog too!

How about any of the following:
1) EPMD
2) BDP
3) Eric B & Rakim
4) Nice & Smooth
5) Pete Rock & CL Smooth
6) Ultramags
7) Gangstarr

Any of those deserve the nod over ODB, the Streets, and Tical. I loved DP, but number one of all time?

Those bands were hip hop.

i'm friends with the current dj for digable planets, he has been co-hosting an open mic for high school kids for the past 6 years and spins the entire night. dj jedi, he's one of a kind.
i was freaking out when i didn't see midnight marauders on the list, then when i got down to number two....perfect.

and i don't know if you've checked out coachella set times, but they are so fucked.

Eric B and Rakim #1 on my list.

Anonymous Ed Sherrell said...

Your list is official, homie. A little Wu heavy, but that's not really a bad thing. Much better than being Markie Mark heavy or Young MC heavy.

Anyway, "Illmatic" should never fall outside of any true hip-hop fan's top 10. Two glaring omissions: The Fugees' "The Score" and Gang Starr's "Moment Of Truth" which might be my favorite album of all time. People talk about the production brilliance that Dre brought to "The Chronic" and deservedly so. But I don't think there has ever been a better collection of true hip-hop beats than the tracks DJ Premier created for "Moment..."

Please check it if you haven't heard it. "Above The Clouds" with the GZA is one of the greatest SONGS (notice I said "songs", not "hip-hop songs") of all time.

Also, anyone whose really impressed by "Hell Hath No Fury" I implore you to go listen to "Reasonable Doubt". A much better mc rappin about the hustle life over much better beats.

P.S. go to edsherrellgallery.com for The Playoff Project. New music and art up now.

I can dig. I don't know if I'd put D.P. as numero uno, but a fine list nonetheless. I have to say that '36 Chambers' was a soundtrack to one of the better periods, at least in my memory, than most of the others. As always - well done.

i own reasonable doubt, it's not like it's some obscure album, for chrissakes. i was just never really impressed with jigga. sorry. i never got into the whole snoop/dre/tupac thing either. different strokes you know?

but i'll tell you, i was obsessed with cube. my top five would definitely include either "amerikkkas most" or "death certificate." probably "death certificate", i think it held together as an album better.

8:11 AM
Anonymous barry from michigan said...

I think inclusion for inclusion's sake is what ruins top lists. If you never liked a Tupac album enough to put him on your list, then good, leave him off. Don't just put him on cause other people think he should be.

And really, are there any female MCs that have made a top 25 list album? Missy, maybe. But so what

But my favorite thing about your list, is it's YOUR list. How many more 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' 'Pet Sounds' 'Stairway to Heaven' lists are there out there? We don't need a hip hop version of those lists. Agree or disagree, I like that it's YOUR list

Ok, it's a very nice list, but WTF is up with The Cold Vein's omission?!? It's easily in my top 5 hip-hop albums of all time. :)

you guys dropped the ball on this one. You clearly don't listen to enough hip-hop to know good from bad. What about these.

Murs - 3:16
Slug and Murs: FELT
People Under the Stairs? - Any of their CD's

Jurassic 5 - quality control.
Brother Ali - Shadows on the Sun
Dr Dre - 2001
Zion I

COMMON GUYS, you rushed that one. We know Texas is far from good hip hop, but common baby!

the list is good but ready to die is top 3 in my book. 36 chambers could be higher up too. additionally, company flow def. needs to be on there, and top 5. AND more importantly than anything else, WHERE THE FUCK IS KMD BLACK BASTARDS. preemptively, also, THE CARTER III. 1

7:47 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Very good list - I appreciate that this isn't a critical list, but was suprised that given your time frame and taste that Pete Rock & CL Smooth did not make it on here. I have very similar taste and it would be a top 5 album on my list.

i agree with most of the rest...all solid albums. oukast "aquemini" is surely their defining album. digable planet's "reachin" is pretty amazing as well.

one i think got left off though is 2pac "me against the world". 2pac's best album and one of the more influential (released through prison, the beginning of all of the 2pac controversy, etc.). also, i do feel as if fugee's "the score" is one of the best as well.

Digable Planets as the #1 hip hop album of all time?!!!! Are you on crack? Do you live in the suburbs of Dallas, Texas? Further, how can you include The Streets in your Top 25? Also, Nas' Illmatic didn't make the Top 10? I'm surprised you didn't include Vanilla Ice on this list.

3:17 PM

Please check it if you haven't heard it. "Above The Clouds" with the GZA is one of the greatest SONGS (notice I said "songs", not "hip-hop songs") of all time.

its inspectah deck, not gza... and any greatest hip hop albums list is going to be 'Wu Heavy' for obvious reasons. They have the most potent overall catalogue in hip hop. Its like having the best rock albums and saying the list is 'Beatle Heavy'
