Let's get this part out of the way first: on Shapes Have Fangs' song "What in the World," the Austin (via Gun Barrel City) band sounds almost exactly like Oh, Inverted World-era Shins:

Not that this is a bad thing, because who doesn't love that record? I'm sure they get the Shins comparison a lot down in their hometown, and for good reason, but a quick listen to the other songs on their myspace page reveals a band with a pretty wide range of influences, and a strong penchant for the poppier side of '60s psych and garage, a la the Kinks or the Zombies. Check out the excellent "Sir Joshua" and the surf-garage influenced "Milk Fed" here.
