the pitchfork music festival

Despite this year's subpar sound, the Pitchfork Music Festival has firmly established itself as one of the most laid-back and all-around-enjoyable fests around. The weather was ideal, the Ice Cream Man was in full effect, and we left Chicago with the revelation that all festivals should be required by law to feature at least 3 legendary hip-hop acts. Here are our top 5 highlights from the fest, accompanied by a shit ton of Polaroids™:

1. De La Soul bringing out Prince Paul to DJ and just hang out. Whoa.

2. The Clipse busting out "What Happened to That Boy" and "Grindin'," as well as a generous helping of We Got it For Cheap jams. These guys seemed genuinely psyched to be there, and their energy was unmatched all weekend (except maybe by De La). Malice and Pusha T also reminded us that no matter what Pitchfork or anyone else thinks, Hell Hath No Fury was the album of the year.

3. This:

Clipse Power

4. GZA tearing through an abridged version of Liquid Swords (with help from fellow Clan member Cappadonna), then revisiting a few Wu-Tang classics. I don't think he had any idea what Pitchfork was. Update: Read Gza's thoughts on gorilla vs. bear here.

5. Grizzly Bear, Victoria Legrand from Beach House, and Bradford from Deerhunter joining Girl Talk for a live "Knife" mashup. This will probably never happen again, but it worked better than you might imagine, and Victoria's awesome drunk-dancing was one of the best things I saw all weekend.

We also thoroughly enjoyed Jamie Lidell, the Cool Kids, Grizzly Bear, Cadence Weapon, and Menomena. Check out some of our shots from the weekend below, and be sure to visit our friends at You Ain't No Picasso, Muzzle of Bees, MFKWCRG, and Stereogum for more comprehensive coverage...

Chris I think I've told you this already but the Polaroids rock. You make me want to dig mine out.

And this makes me so very bummed I didn't make the trek up to Chicago. :(

What a gorgeous weekend. My review of Saturday can be found here. Sunday review is nearly finished and should be up later this afternoon.

I think your Polaroid takes better shots than my digital camera.

Nice shots, chris. Saw you backstage a couple times, looking pretty gansta.

Sorry I didn't get a chance to say hello, we'll have to hang out at ACL this year (when I can actually go to afterparties and stuff).

I agree with 1, 2, and I guess #3 but you must have missed the Girl Talk street party. The cops were even getting in to it, kicking us off the street and then brining us balloons...good stuff...wish I had some weed...
