animal collective: live on conan

In case you missed it like I did, here's footage of Animal Collective's national television debut last night on Conan O'Brien. The band played Strawberry Jam gem "#1," and with Avey's vocals even more distorted and fucked up than on the record, the spotlight is focused on Noah's ethereal warbling. Jennifer Connelly and Fred Willard fans everywhere are still scratching their heads. In HD, thanks to Collected Animals:

yeah, i'm still scratching my head, too: 90% of their music is pretentious ridiculousness and they draw from the pool for Conan. Heroes.

I'm not familiar with the animal collective, but that was awful, and boring. It seems like one of those things thats makes no sense but its SOOOO Indie that hippsters and people like Pitchfork Love it becuase no one else does.

interestingly enough, some people like animal collective because they think they sound good and because they make you happy
not because no one else does
did you really think that post through?

uh, anon 531, animal collective aren't about making new fans when the opportunity arises. they play their music the only way they know how - with respect towards their art and disregard for fakesters who root for the most accessible songs. and yeah, they're soooo pretentious.. take a look at other musical acts and look at AC. they're wearing tshirts and jeans, not those stupid fuggin' huge glasses, superskinny jeans, and shitty haircuts. they have substance. fuck off, haters.

i need to clarify
we don't like them because nobody else likes them
thats just dumb
if you ever like a band for that reason, you should stop listening to music

animal collective is one of my favorite bands, but i'm a little confused by the song choice here. "#1" is one of the most challenging tunes on the new album and was even more difficult due to the heavy vocal effects here. if they wanted to play something other than the single "Peacebone", they should have went with "For Reverend Green" or "Fireworks"-- those tunes aren't quite as "safe" (by AC standards, anyway) and are undeniably great. it makes little sense to go on a show like Conan and be purposefully abstract and alienate potential new fans. is there any other reason to perform on television than to garner a larger audience? but, honestly, could we expect anything other than utter weirdness from these dudes? you gotta respect the fact they play by their own rules...

the greater problem here is that they sounded like shit in that vid clip. who cares what they played. as soon as you start examining motives you stop listening to ac for what they do for you. a good thought i once heard: when rock and roll came along, everyone wanted to own the music. rather than share it like it was meant to be. music is music. why did ac go on conan to begin with? completely boggles me.

remember, they only had 4 minutes, so their choices were somewhat limited. apparently, it was either this or "Derek," and the band felt that they were better suited to play "#1" given the amount of time they had.

It's far from stupid to think people like bands becuase no one else does. it happens all the time. Mainstream is bad, and underground is good. that is pretty much the heart of the "hipster, indie" scene, and websites like pitchfork. If it sounds like mainstream or is mainstream its bad. the type of people who would never give bands like "the killers" or "the shins" a chance becuase they are on mtv and 14 year old girls love 'em, but animal collective is so underground its cool that no one gets them. Am I saying that is all of AC's fans? not at all. but some people like them more becuase of it. someone earlier posted a comment that proved that point. he said how "they don't wear those super tight jeans and big glasses". Its all about image to some people. i have to agree with people before me and say it just seems pretentious.

#1 is probably one of my fav songs off of strawberry jam and it was awesome on conan. a friend of mine who hadn't heard of animal collective watched it and said it was so unexpected that she wanted to look into them. so obv they are making fans no matter what song they play.

point made.
if they only had 4 minutes then their choices were limited. they couldn't do "who could win a rabbit?". their label (domino) wouldn't have gone for that. they're supporting strawberry jam so they had 2 songs short enough.
i liked it, i just wanted them to get more from this spot.

To say Animal Collective is pretentious is to suggest that Noah is not sincere when he sings about wanting a better life for his wife and kid and that Dave doesn’t feel isolation when surrounded in public settings. If you ever read an interview with them it can’t be true. I think anonymous (and many reviewers) just have an idea of what music or what kind of career path a musician should have. They are real artist; they write what they know in a style that excites them currently. That’s why they have a more diverse library then most artists. They constantly change and don’t seem interested in the past only present. At some point AC will have an album that demands their 8-10 min single is played on TV. They have a really interesting approach to what they do…. Maybe that’s why pitchfork likes them?? But anonymous is probably right their fans just show up to the concerts b/c they are so indie? I bet you would find more pretentious people at a “Killers” concert… a bad who sucks not b/c they are mainstream but b/c they are not honest or interesting.

"Unsolved Mysteries", "Chores", "Winter Wonder Land", and "Derek" are shorter than "#1". the would-be time crunch explanation simply does not hold much water. it works for why they couldn't have played "Reverend Green" or "Fireworks", but not the ones listed above. Plus, they could have easily trimmed a minute or so off "Peace Bone".

Utter bullshit any way you shake it. The "song" is a joke. A flippant fuck you to anyone who's ever made an honest attempt at musical creation-- only slightly less ridiculous than four minutes of silence would have been.

Shoulda played Derek, there's at least some beauty there.

Oh, we're still having the 'ol "authentic artistry" debate? However authentic the performance may have been, or however much Animal Collective calculated how deep into the Man they would stick it, the fact remains: that performance gave haters enough ammunition to decimate modern art's already pretentious reputation. No one is going to enjoy a simple ambient piece from an album they've never heard before. No one is going to be interested in an abstraction so inhuman. Saying the performance was "interesting" says less about AC than it does about the sayer. Saying AC was performing for themselves means that they belong in a basement, not on national television. All I saw were some blissfully brave dudes closing their eyes hard enough not to see the thousands of invisible eyes watching their every quirky gesticulation.

In conclusion, what the fuck?

i thought it was boring, but awesome. what's better than introducing boredom to a place filled with non-stop madness? when was the last time you saw something like that on national t.v.?

on the other hand i think their new album is terrible. the whole album feels like they took one idea and stretched it out for five minutes and called it a song. don't get me wrong, i love their old stuff, i don't really know what happened to produce strawberry jams. i'd rather they had done something showing off their talent as opposed to strumming a guitar on reverb for four minutes. but i applaud them for bringing something different to the telly.

How could we expect Animal Collective do anything less than ... a very unexpected and odd performance? Thats.. what they do. I think its hilarious. One thing I will say - has anyone else noticed how BAD everything sounds on Conan? Is it a technical issue? I caught Bloc party on there last week and I have never heard their sound so off.

Animal collective are one of my favorite bands since feels. Their stuff is so fresh compared to a lot of the canned popular music out there. Sure some of the popular stuff is fun to listen to, but when I think of currently released music as an art form I think of bands like AC. They arent a band that is playing based on a popular standard, but a band that is playing base on their artistic standards. Having said that, Watching them play #1 on conan was hilarious. I would have loved to have been in the audience to see everyone's reaction. Animal Colective are one of those bands that isn't for everyone. I think their music might be easier for the average person to understand, if they're exposed to a body of their work rather than just one song. I've also seen this performed live in LA and it sounded much better. I have to agree that most performances on Conan sound terrible. I also have to agree that it was most likely a time constraint as to why they played this song. Seems like this is the type of gig that would have been a label's idea rather than the artists.

This is like explaining to people who don't care about music why I think Radiohead's the best and most important band of the last 20 years.

They just don't understand it, they hear noise and can't possibly understand why somebody would like this music unless they wanted to be cool.

Calling out people for liking something because it is "cool" is too often the refuge of those who do not want to understand the difficult.

Let's say AC were major label'd and were truly bothered to edit themselves down to only their most traditionally melodic stuff. Could that album break through to the masses? Of course.

Is it tragic that Animal Collective would never use their gifts to make something accessible to all? Sure, but their story is not so simple.

You have to work to find the beauty in these songs and maybe that makes it all the more rewarding. If you or America don't feel like working for your art than go listen to something else.

I think "#1" is as good a primer to what makes Animal Collective and Panda Bear special as any. It's got the two trademarks of what they're doing better than anyone else right now.

1. Ethereal, but universal melody (al la Brian Wilson)

2. Repetition as progression until cathartic release, like techno and trance.

Somebody in America has to have appreciated these devices and will have one hell of reward waiting for them when they dig into the catalog.

I've tried to like AC, I really have, but I've come up short. In fact, I really think they're crap. But this performance was really cool if for no other reason than it was different.

But still Dan Deacon on the NBC morning show takes the cake for best WTF/best anachronistic performance EVAH:

I just try and imagine the throngs of smalltown USA denizens, drinking their instant coffee, trying to understand this.

Pure genius.

P.S. I also think Dan Deacon is crap.

perrrrrrrhaps so!

p.s.
got to quote this:
"its SOOOO Indie that hippsters and people like Pitchfork Love it becuase no one else does."

:D
hell, if A.C. played Peacebone instead, those ohhh so Indie hipsters would be like
"pshh...Animal Collective soo sold out man..pshh..playing on Conan? come on! talk about selling out..pshh"
haha

Blogger Andrew said...

I think the reason they played this song was just because it plays Panda Bear and Avey Tare off each other so fundamentally, which no other songs on Strawberry Jam do, at least to that extent. Take out either of their parts, and the song would be totally incomplete. Also, I love this song just as much as all of the other Strawberry Jam songs - the melodies are just as simple and lovely as on the other songs, they're just masked on this one by apparent wordlessness and effects.

As for selling out.. who cares? Just bothering to give that significance basically means you're not really talking about music anyway, which is dumb. Especially with Animal Collective.

Let's not argue... c'mon guys. Let's smoke a few doobies and tune out. AC is all about their art, and how the music feels. I agree with Jon who said "interestingly enough, some people like animal collective because they think they sound good and because they make you happy" and that's what it's all about... being happy.

I would like to point out that people who isten to popular music are just like the hipsters, they like it because it's popular, rather than unpopular. long after the fact...i gotta add to the mix.
i am a 49 year old woman... a mom and a journalist ...far from hip. and i loved the performance. genuinely. here's the thing: i fell asleep with the tv on...and woke up to the performance. only...i was hearing it long before i woke up...and it was creeping into my sleep, before i figured out the strange noises were coming from the tv. so i sat up..and struggled to wake up fully...and try to figure out what i was seeing. still foggy. eventually i roused myself completely, and hit rewind on the TIVO...and watched it again. i loved the way it sounded, and i loved watching these boys performing as if they were trying to wade through deep water. and they look so young and so earnest. it's sweet. i even googled them to learn more about them (that's how i found this site).

anyway...just my two cents. i can tell you AC's appeal has nothing to do with "hip" for me and i'm certain my attraction to the song is genuine, since i wasn't quite awake when it hit me... just the right way.

okay, back to your fighting.

To me this is a gesture on their part that even though they are on this big talk show, they will always stay true to the music. Yeah, they could have played Peacebone or an accessible version of Chores, but they chose to play the second most inaccessible song on the album (second to Cuckoo Cuckoo, which wouldn't have fit the time slot anyway), thereby sending a message that it's not about marketing themselves.

That said, the performance was still boring, and I would have enjoyed seeing them play pretty much any other track on the album more than I enjoyed this.

I'm a baltimore native. Until their performance on Conan, I had never heard of them but perhaps in passing. I genuinely enjoyed their song, and was amazed at how brave they were to perform such an esoteric piece on national television. Perhaps most of Conan's audience couldn't dig it, but they found a new fan in me.

I sincerely think this is a great song, and I sincerely think this was a great performance. I don't think it's a stretch to say the band felt the same way. It has a vibrant sound and a great melody and to say it's "intentionally difficult" is sort of asinine, since there's plenty to like about the tune. It's a moot point though since I think you can find merit in just about any form of music, even if it's just nonsense, because witnessing the performance and expression of it in can be inspiring in itself, even if you, PERSONALLY, don't quite understand what's appealing about the music.

I think they played #1 because they felt it represented them best at the time. They could have played something more accessible for the sheer sake of winning over fans, but instead they opted for honesty over marketing which makes me happy as a fan. Anyone saying this is some sort of pretentious stab at saying fuck you to the audience has got it completely backwards. All they're doing is putting themselves out there in the most sincere, loving way they know how and it's up to the audience whether they'll respond with respect or simply by folding their arms and pouting like babies. The latter is pretty fucking self absorbed if you ask me.

Not sure anyone is still checking this, but I thought I'd post Avey's thoughts on what song they picked and why. enjoy:

"In all honesty had we been givin more time on the show i think we would have played peacebone or somthing a bit more energetic. But as much as we asked we were given a strict time line of four mintutes. There are plenty of bands waiting in line to play on tv so had we said "well we arent doing it unless we can play longer" im sure they would have just said "soorrrryy". Though we did cut the intro to #1 i personally was totally against editing any lyrical part of peacebone or any other song for that matter hence another reason as to why we didnt play those songs. We had also thought about doing a new jam but we would have had to submit it for listening and edited anything to the right time and so it was just too much hastle cause weve been on tour.

For awhile we were going to play derek but after playing both that and #1 live over the past few weeks it just seemed to us that #1 would give people a little bit of a better idea of what we are and we thought it was a better song for TV for obvious reasons i suppose.

Kristin brought up a good point on our way home last night that had we played peacebone or somthing more wild and tried to be very energetic and crazy on stage it might have just looked silly if the sound didnt really punch on TV. She said #1 was a better choice in a way cause we werent trying to be weird or anything up there. We were just playing the song and having a good time and what came out was equally interesting if nothing else."

Oh come one people. Let's not make this an issue of Indie Hipsters vs. everyone else. If you didn't enjoy it then you didn't enjoy it, the end. I personally thought it was fantastic and applaud the Collective for going the route they did. Yeah it wasn't the most exciting song, but since when have they been grabbing for fans? I thought they pulled it off brilliantly.

Why are so many people who didn't like it posting on this page anyways?
