favorite songs of 2007
Here is some semblance of a totally subjective list of songs that I loved the most from 2007, complete with assorted mp3s. Okay, that's the last list for 2007.

50. New Pornographers - Myriad Harbour
49. White Williams - "Violator"
48. SSION - "Clown"
47. The Tough Alliance - "Something Special"
46. Simian Mobile Disco - "I Believe"
45. Daniel Rossen - Deep Blue Sea
44. Brazos - Mary Jo
43. Caribou - Melody Day
42. The Field - "A Paw in my Face"
41. Black Moth Super Rainbow - "When the Sun Grows on Your Tongue"
40. Zach Condon - Venice
39. St. Vincent - "Landmines"
38. Studio - "West Side"
37. Yeasayer - 2080
36. Hood Headlinaz - "Bama Gettin' Money"
35. Arcade Fire - "My Body is a Cage"
34. Jana Hunter - Babies
33. Burial - Ghost Hardware
32. Department of Eagles - No One Does it Like You (demo)
31. Ola Podrida - "Cindy"
30. The Polyphonic Spree - "Light to Follow"
29. Spoon - "Black Like Me"
28. Alela Diane - White as Diamonds (Daytrotter session)
27. Map of Africa - "Bone"
26. Celebration - "Heartbreak"
25. Grizzly Bear - "Blackcurrant Jam"
24. Bodies of Water - I Guess I'll Forget the Sound
23. Gui Boratto - "Beautiful Life"
22. Black Lips - "Fairy Stories"
21. Deerhoof - "Matchbook Seeks Maniac"
20. J Dilla - "Nothing Like This"
19. Animal Collective - "#1"
18. Marissa Nadler - Diamond Heart
17. The Tough Alliance vs. Taken by Trees - Taken Too Young
16. Blue Gene Tyranny - "Next Time Might Be Your Time"
************************************
15. Burial - "Archangel"
The standout track on an altogether stunning album; the ghostly warped/pitch-shifted vocals make this the most haunted love song of the year.
14. Outkast - "Da Art of Storytellin' Pt. 4"
This was unexpected: a triumphant return to Aquemini form for Andre 3000. His epic verse erases any doubt about the fact that he's still one of the best MCs alive, when he feels like it.
13. LCD Soundsystem - "Someone Great"
12. Radiohead - "Reckoner"
11. Lil' Wayne - "I Feel Like Dying"
Weezy goes from "playing touch football on Marijuana Street" to being a "prisoner locked up behind Xanax bars." Without a doubt the most enjoyably fucked up song of '07.
10. Chromatics - In the City
The best song to emerge from the stellar Italians Do It Better family in 2007. Johnny Jewel's production is at its peak here, and Ruth Radelet's icy vocals sound amazing over the warmth of the audible vinyl crackle.
09. M.I.A. - "Paper Planes (remix feat. Bun B and Rich Boy)"
08. Animal Collective - "Safer"
Leave it to AC to relegate their best song of 2007 to a b-side. Granted, the 9+ minute-long "Safer" would've felt entirely out of place on Strawberry Jam, but on its own, it's a haunting, otherworldly psychedelic dreamscape.
07. Santogold - "LES Artistes"
06. White Denim - "All You Really Have to Do"
05. Panda Bear - Untitled (Ma Fama session)
In some ways, it's a shame that this is now an Animal Collective song. I like their rendition too, but Noah Lennox's fragile, ethereal solo version, complete with that Zombies sample, is perfect. Recorded live for Portuguese blog Ma Fama, it's my #1 most-played song of the year (according to iTunes).
04. The Polyphonic Spree - "The Fragile Army"
Written by a disgusted Tim DeLaughter as he watched our current president's State of the Union address, this overtly political call to arms is one of the most dramatic and theatrical productions the Spree has ever recorded.
03. The Besnard Lakes - "Disaster"/"For Agent 13"
02. UGK feat. Outkast - "International Players Anthem"
The hip-hop single of 2007, BY FAR. Dre's opening verse glides over Willie Hutch's "I Choose You" to create one of my favorite musical moments of the year. This is a bonafide classic before the drums even kick in.
01. Panda Bear - Bros
I'm fairly confident that this song will go down as a timeless pop classic. Give it a few decades.

Blue Gene Tyranny! Almost forgot about their album that came out this year..
I'm a little surprised that Comfy in Nautica didn't end up on your list, especially since it sort of became a slogan for the website this year.
I never really got into the Paper Planes remix as much as the original, even though I gave it a chance all year long.
Also thought that Melody Day might have placed a little higher than it is.
Radiohead released an album, what, 3 weeks ago, a month? Hard to really soak that material in for a year end list, I think.
I chose your #5 as my #1 for the same reason you gave. It is quite simply a perfect song. I was taken back when AC performed it live on the first leg of their summer tour, with that swooping and swaying beat behind it, but you gotta admit it's interesting to see them take that song to an entirely different place. But Panda's original makes a mood lighter anytime, and just doesn't seem to get old.
Great list !! You guys turned me on to White Denim, and i thank you very very much..great band !!!
I'm with you on the longevity speculation regarding Panda Bear's Bros. So good, its like a Mona Lisa. Each listen is a new experience.
nice list, i havent really warmed up to panda bear yet. especially as your #1 & 5 picks. to each his own.
no jens lekman? im disgusted. hah.

i love you so much gvb
sorry but that untitled panda bear song kinda sucks compared to the amazing stuff on person pitch
Regarding your choice for Studio - "West Coast" That's the name of the album, did you mean "West Side"?
oops, nice catch. yeah i meant 'west side,' just fixed it. thanks.
good to see spoon well represented, but no devin the dude-what a job? come on guys...
Could you possibly post the mp3 for #6? It's the only track I can't find anywhere else, and I've really enjoyed the White Denim tracks you've posted so far.
No Bon Iver? Hmm...
The Moths- Valentine
Find it and love it.

i second this, it's impossible for us to buy the tour ep, but it doesnt mean we shouldnt have the tracks!
"fairy stories" is not a 2007 song, it was was written and recorded in 2005, how are you guys putting a live version of a two year old song on your year end lists??
i realize it's a difficult concept to grasp, but the version on our lists was released in 2007, and i'd say it's markedly better than the '05 version. that's how.
I'm still putting my year-end list together, but I already know what the top three will be:
1. Panda Bear: Comfy in Nautica
2. MIA: Paper Planes
3. Low: Hatchet (Optimimi Version) (and not just because I did the video; this would have been #1 most any other year of this decade)
My "In Rainbows" song of choice is "House of Cards"--I'm sure that'll be way up there. And well, I'm still partial to "Icky Thump," dammit. Geezus, that seems like six years ago now.
I really love Low's "Hatchet (Optimimi Version)", total oversight on my part. it should've been on my list.
No prob--like I said, the first half of this year already seems like a decade ago to me.
decent lists but i think the absence of battles is odd. i'd also make sure to add the taming of the hands that came back to life by sunset rubdown.
i thought comfy in nautica was the panda bear jam yet didn't make the list. me confused.
How bout some love for Apostle of Hustle - Cheap like Sebastien? One of my top songs for 2007.
bros is the most fantastic song e.v.e.r.
some great songs on there!
Bros, Take Pills, and Comfy in Nautica all top my list.
I have to admit, I really dislike "In the City". It's really mediocre and kind of empty.
Everybody seemed to hate the new Interpol, but I really liked Wrecking Ball, Rest My Chemistry, and Lighthouse.
Give me Videotape or Bodysnatchers as my fave Radiohead.
this is why i love this blog. i've got a list of my fav songs of 2007. 60 deep and free downloads http://criticalacclaim.wordpress.com/favorite-songs-of-2007/
That untitled panda bear song,is amazing! Could have worked as a perfect b-side on the -take pills/bonfire of the vanities- 7", but then its too good to be simply relegated to a b-side.

i think bros is one of the best songs of the decade.. hands down my #1..
i also really enjoyed..
atlas--battles
the crystal cat--dan deacon
cuckoo cuckoo--animal collective
comfy in nautica--panda bear
john allyn smith sails--okkervil river
a tender history in rust--do make say think
paper planes--m.i.a.
the girl talk remix of grizzly bear's "knife"
a paw in my face--the field
the hot chip remix of matthew dear's "don and sherri"
Nice. Bodies of Water is also in my "Best of '07" .
dude, how do you get the "Da Drought 3" album? I went to Best Buy and a real indie record store hear in ATL and neither place had it or knew how to get it. I'm not opposed to stealing it off the net, but sometimes buying it is the only way to make sure you get the entire thing and the right songs.
also, any idea on when a Cool Kids album is coming out?
you can download da drought 3 free and legally here:

I'm surprised none of Gavin Castleton's new prog hop tracks from his A bullet, a lever, a key made the list
me either, Joe.
I believe that the untitled Panda Bear track is being called "Working for Ariel" (Pink), and Animal Collective has titled their version of it "Song for Ariel." I'm not really sure which one I like more, they're both excellent in their own ways. It's definitely great the way AC fucks around with the pacing in theirs, but Panda's version is definitely an easier listen.
impressive list chris. good effort. some of the indie tracks i havent had a chance to listen to...i gotta check'em out.
The lack of "of Montreal" makes me want to cry!
Damn you Grizzly vs. Bear!
This list is decent at best.
Too much indie freaks. You're deliberatly avoiding radio-friendly material (you choose "My Body Is A Cage" over "Intervention", "No Cars Go", or "Ocean Of Noise"??). Not to mention the absence of pop masterpieces such as "Overpowered" or "Umbrella". That kind of elitist snobism is disgusting.
And what happened to Jens Lekman and The National? Did you listen to "Boxer" at all??
Well, you didn't mention Of Montreal, I'll give you that.
bubbalooba joe, you sound like a fucking retard. also, boxer sucks.
I'm always checking your site and love the year end list. I do wonder how there's no Okkervil River on the list. I thought their album was one of the years best and has a couple of stand out tracks
Thanks for the cool MP3's, GvB. I'm digging the "Bros." track!
"venice" only proves what a complete sham and gimmick Beirut is. it is such a great song! zach condon needs to get the hell over Beirut. Put it to bed. Put out a "solo" album where he's not afraid to record music that isn't so limited by itself.
wesley, i agree. cato as a pun? the past is a grotesque animal?
I guess I'm kinda with Bubbalooba Joe, but I wouldn't dare to be as insulting as he was. I was kinda wondering if anyone could recommend another good music blog with maybe a slightly more mainstream touch to it, not trying to be a dick. I'm not saying I'm an avid Linkin Park or Nickelback fan or anything, just kinda hoping to find some "middle ground" of music I haven't heard yet. If anyone could point me in the right direction I'd greatly appreciate it though, maybe a place where some NIN would make a "best of" list, I still do like this blog though!
Nice list. Missing some Okkervil River, Loney Dear & the rest of the tracks on Sound of Silver. Gonna check out the mp3's as soon as I get my dick outta my mouth.
Agreed, NIN - Year Zero was dope and should be heard....unlike any other NIN I'd say
paw in the face really gets deep in your head, nice choice
1.Bon Iver-Skinny Love
2.Girl Talk- Knife by Grizzly Bear remix
3.Justice-D.A.N.C.E.
4.Vampire Weekend-Oxford Comma
5.Panda Bear-Comfy in Nautica
6.Santogold-L.E.S. Artistes
7.M.I.A.-paper planes
8.Jens Lekman-Opposite of Hallelujah
9.The National-Fake Empire
10.Feist-Brandy Alexander
