new Radiohead album: in rainbows?

A day after some joker pulled off one of the more impressive Rickrolls of all time in the form of a cryptic, Internet-wide Radiohead LP7 pseudo event, the band has posted this to their official homepage at midnight GMT, October 1:

Hello everyone.

Well, the new album is finished, and it's coming out in 10 days;

We've called it In Rainbows.

Hotel Chevalier

Wes Anderson has released a free iTunes download of Hotel Chevalier, a 13-minute prequel/introduction for his upcoming film, The Darjeeling Limited. The short, which was shot in 2005 and stars Jason Schwartzman and a bruised-up Natalie Portman, was originally intended as a "working draft for the feature," according to the LA Times. Anderson also tells the Times that he hoped Chevalier "would play out like a piece of short fiction while Darjeeling would unspool like a novel." Plus, um, Natalie Portman's first nude scene. Get it here.

In case you're wondering what that one song was, it's Peter Sarstedt's "Where Do You Go To My Lovely."

Grizzly Bear: "knife" live at hot freaks!

Here's footage of Grizzly Bear performing "Knife" at our unrelated-to-ACL Hot Freaks! after-party at Club Deville. As you'll see in the video, the rocky backdrop of Deville's gorgeous outdoor stage couldn't have been any more perfect for the band's ethereal set, which was attended by members of both the Arcade Fire and the Killers. Thanks to our friends from Austin's Super!Alright! for the vivid images, and to Grizzly Bear for the jaw-dropping hymns.

song of the night

"Jeremiah" is a beautifully warm and wistful pop song that the Archivist made in his bedroom, and I've had it on repeat all evening. It drifts away too soon though, fading into some disorienting yet hypnotic found sounds about the stars that make you forget what you were listening to in the first place. Promising, and recommended.

lions + limes

Thanks to my favorite UK blogger for sharing the title track from Jonquil's upcoming LP, due out next week on Try Harder. I'd never heard of this band, but "Lions" is a perfectly soaring and achingly sincere (if a little too short) introduction that, upon first listen, evoked admittedly hasty comparisons to Beirut and the Arcade Fire.

Deerhoof + Bloc Party: Live in Dallas

While I was enjoying the sights and sounds of White Denim, Peter and the Wolf, the Books, Pinback, Midlake, etc. at the Wall of Sound Festival last night at LaGrave Field, David took in the sold-out Deerhoof + Bloc Party show at Dallas' House of Blues. Post and photos by David:

Bloc Party commanded the audience with noble poise, exuding humble British earnestness, and were accompanied by rather appropriate and tasteful visuals. Not my favorite band by any stretch, but they made an impressive, skilled statement to the sold out crowd, and I might say it was somewhat difficult to not walk away a bit more enthused about Bloc Party than before. Kele's an impressive frontman, and the fellas all have their own differentiated purpose as they stand as silhouettes in the backlit haze.

kele rocking his finest jorts

*********************************

Openers Deerhoof were taut as always and proved, yet again, why they remain one of the better bands of the decade. Admittedly, the children of the night might have been somewhat aghast by this admittedly very strange trio, but that's ok. It's thrilling to see such a vividly gifted band have the opportunity to play before fresh ears. They covered quite a bit of ground, yet Friend Opportunity was distinctly absent among the older classics. Deerhoof are ill as sin.

the monks

Thanks to our friend Bill for telling me about The Monks, a band of 5 American GIs stationed in Germany during the mid-'60s, whose short-lived career resulted in some of the weirdest recordings ever and a bunch of confused German kids. They've been called "the first free-floating building in the history of rock 'n' roll," and while it'd be obvious to say that a band this innovative and weird was ahead of their time, it's almost unfathomable to me that these guys existed in 1966.

new peter and the wolf

To very little fanfare, Red Hunter has quietly self-released the new Peter and the Wolf album, The Ivori Palms. Inspired by a dream featuring one of his heroes and recorded mostly during late nights/early mornings spent squatting and drinking Scotch with panhandlers, vagabonds, and other assorted bums in a condemned Canadian warehouse, the album finds Red returning to the lo-fi homemade sounds of his earlier recordings. And while the record does contain its share of beautifully traditional folk songs, it also hints at Red's (possible) boredom with that genre, as he experiments with new arrangements and instruments -- most obviously on the badass kalimba jam, "The Bike of Jonas." For me, songs like "Better Days" and "Sparks" sort of embody The Ivori Palms' theme of hope and optimism in the face of uncertainty, and like most of the record's best moments, they're an ideal soundtrack to those nights that -- for whatever reason -- you're still up at 4 AM.

glory hope mountain

I haven't talked about Ottawa's The Acorn in nearly two years, but I figure it's about time I mentioned that they have a pretty gorgeous new album coming out next week on Paper Bag Records. The band's first full-length, Glory Hope Mountain, is a beautiful tribute to and recounting of the life of lead singer Rolf Klausener's mother, Gloria Esperanza Montoya. I was immediately drawn to the album's closing track, "Lullabye (Mountain)," which Klausener says best sums up the relationship he had with his mother. In his mother's native Honduras, lullabyes are traditionally sung by women, so Klausener recruited the heartbreaking vocals of Ohbijou's Casey Mecija, and the results are stunning.

ACL 2007 in Polaroids

my morning jacket at ACL '07

This year's trip to Austin for the ACL Festival was all about the extracurriculars. That's not to say the festival didn't have it's fair share of highlights, however. Although slightly depressing, Sound Team's final show was really great, providing a bittersweet end to the band's way-too-short career. At least two-thirds of us* are now officially My Morning Jacket fans after their stellar set before a radiant sunset. A small suggestion for the esteemed ACL Advisory Board: more hip-hop next year? Common and M.I.A.'s sets were fun as hell, and both were among the most energetic and well-received of the entire festival. We were also impressed by bits and pieces of several other sets, including Bloc Party, Regina Spektor, and LCD Soundsystem. Our lone regret of the weekend: no Bjork sightings. Seems like everyone but us bumped into her at our hotel pool, and her set was one of the most unanimously lauded of the fest. We did run into a bunch of other people though:

The Hot Freaks! after-parties were even better than we'd anticipated. Friday's performances by Crazy Sexy Rainbow, Brazos, and Grizzly Bear were all outstanding. As YANP mentioned, the cliffs of Club Deville provided the ideal backdrop for Grizzly Bear's ethereal jams, and the Super Alright! dudes did an amazing job of hooking up the complementary visuals. We missed Art Brut, instead opting to check out last-minute addition Car Stereo (Wars)' killer DJ set. Members of the Arcade Fire were in attendance, and even the Killers stopped by to check out Grizzly Bear, which Ed Droste dubbed "the most random thing ever." I think Brandon Flowers' mind was slightly blown by GB's incredible set, and rightfully so:

brandon flowers (with that other guy from the killers)

edward droste

eddie argos

Saturday's Hot Freaks! bill delivered as well. Locals Sparrow House and Yellow Fever had the misfortune of competing with the Arcade Fire's festival set, but both won over the gradually-building crowds. The Rosebuds were up next, and as per usual with them, a dance party broke out on stage. The joint was packed by the time St. Vincent took the stage at the Mohawk, and she didn't disappoint. She played solo at the fest, but this was a full-band affair, and the packed house fell in love.

Arcade Fire: Live at KLRU Studios

The highlight of the weekend for us was without a doubt the Arcade Fire Austin City Limits television taping. The ACL studios were transformed into blogger central (Stereogum, La Blogotheque, IGIF, MOKB, YANP, and Aquarium Drunkard were all in attendance), and the band played a full set that pulled equally from Funeral and Neon Bible (see setlist below). Our front row, side-stage seats -- we were the first ones in line because we are nerds -- offered us the rare chance to experience the best live band in the world from literally less than five feet away.

Highlights of the hour-long set included Regine screaming right into our faces through her megaphone -- while making eye contact nearly the whole time -- then killing said megaphone by slamming it to the ground and shattering it at our feet. Definitely one of the more uncomfortable and memorable show-going experiences in recent memory. Other notable moments: every song from Funeral, Win demanding the crowd to "Stand the fuck up" on national television, the overpowering organ to kick off "Intervention," and watching the Blogotheque guys lead the frenzied dance party on the floor. Despite having to dodge flying debris from shattered megaphones, drumsticks, and other assorted broken shit (thanks Will Butler), it was was an exhilarating experience that won't soon be forgotten. Thanks to Maury and the great people at ACL/KLRU for their hospitality. We'll keep you posted on when this will air, because you don't want to miss it. UPDATE: The Arcade Fire taping will air on November 10 on most PBS stations.

emily jane white

Layering Cat Power-esque vocals over a crisp piano arrangement, San Francisco resident Emily Jane White has created a beautiful piece, both lyrically and musically, that could easily have been a You Are Free bonus track. CP comparisons aren't bad things -- we love Cat Power -- and when not haphazardly used to describe any artist with a reverby female voice, it can perk one's ears. Kid Sister says Suite is lame

Kid Sister asked me to relay this message to anyone that was treated badly or turned away for various ridiculous reasons at Suite for her show last week in Dallas with Flosstradamus. While she and the Floss kids felt really terrible about what happened, I can assure you guys it wasn't their fault at all:

"i'm sorry dallas. not letting people into a club is soooooooooo lame and it makes me furious to know that went on. we had no idea it was happening, but i suspected it might which is why i had my friend instruct the promoter to let each and every person in. aghhhh. Its really frustrating because the whole philosophy behind why i make music is inclusion and making everyone feel welcome to listen. i will never play that place again. sowwy guys. :(
love,

I'm personally kind of embarrassed that Kid Sis and Flosstradamus now have this negative impression of Dallas, and this does not bode well for the Diplo/Switch show at Suite on the 13th. Anyway, Kid Sister also wanted me to make sure to tell you guys that she thought the venue was "gross," and that next time she comes back to Dallas, she's playing "someone's dad's basement or a field or something" and everyone is invited. In the meantime, check out this insane tour if it's coming to a city near you:

hands up

Here's the brand new mixtape from North Texas' own Central Booking crew. These guys have been killing it around here for a while, and this seamless hour-long mix (featuring Yelle, Pase Rock, Lil' Mama, Blaqstarr, M.I.A., the Cool Kids, and more) pretty much speaks for itself. It's the fucking Party.

We don't make it up to Denton much these days, but the We Shot J.R. Awards Party will be well worth the trip. All ages, free beer for 21+, and the lineup features the aformentioned Central Booking DJs, Pitchfork-approved locals Ghosthustler and Farah, and six of Denton's best bands. And free beer. Click:

after tropicalia

"Brazil 70 follows Brazilian music in the aftermath of Tropicalia as the country's dictatorship entered its most oppressive phase...With the constant threat of imprisonment, artists nevertheless managed to produce radical music that, like Tropicalia before it, managed to deal with questions of identity, sexuality and society in a revolutionary manner"
--Soul Jazz Records

Soul Jazz Records will follow up last year's absolutely flawless Tropicalia: A Brazilian Revolution in Sound -- which is probably my personal favorite compilation of this decade -- with Brazil 70: After Tropicalia, a post-Tropicalia collection "featuring killer Brazilian tunes all influenced by American and British underground rock music from the early 70s." I don't even know where to begin here; the record features many of the more well-known Tropicalia artists (Gilberto Gil, Tom Ze, Gal Costa), as well as a wealth of artists I'd never heard of, and the whole thing is nothing short of mind-blowing. It's a small miracle that any significant art at all was created in post-1970 Brazil's oppressive political climate, much less stuff of this caliber. The main appeal of Brazil 70 is that, much like the Tropicalia comp, it offers uninitiated listeners like myself an otherworldly immersive experience. And as the Guardian puts it, "It's a world that simultaneously seems strangely familiar and deeply alien."

Pitchfork unveiled the tracklist for Grizzly Bear's upcoming Friend EP (pictured above), which is due out November 6. In addition to a few alternate versions, remixes, and covers -- CSS covering "Knife" should be interesting -- the EP also features Daniel Rossen's home-recording of traditional folk ballad "Deep Blue Sea." Daniel gave us this stunning version of the song about six months ago for our Sirius show, and while it may or may not be the version that appears on the EP, it's one of my favorite songs of 2007:

heartbeats

Remember that exclusive mix that Diplo did for Pitchfork that I mentioned yesterday? Well upon numerous further listens, it's pretty incredible. One of the many highlights of the mix is this teenage girls' choir cover of the Knife's "Heartbeats," which I believe I found on Fluxblog over a year ago. While this sometimes goosebump-inducing version isn't quite as perfect as the original, it's pretty damn close. Not sure where you can buy this, but according to Diplo, it's from "one of those pop choir CDs you can buy at Wal-Mart or something."

the boogie down bottle nose dolphins

Diplo and NYC's DJ Eli Escobar have released the latest Hollertronix 12" EP (number 7 if you're scoring at home), this time under the inconceivably rad moniker, the Boogie Down Bottle Nose Dolphins. If you're familiar with the Hollertronix series, then you know they've always been consistently innovative and eminently danceable, and this one is no different. On the EP's opening (and arguably its best) track, Diplo turns an instantly recognizable '80s classic into a new Bmore club anthem:

Hollertronix Betty

The Hollertronix 12"s always sell out, so get #7 here while you can for 8 bucks. Diplo has some shows coming up with Switch in North America, including a stop in Dallas next week.

Have you seen the cover of the new 2 Live Crew-inspired Spank Rock EP Bangers & Cash? This one falls into the "so bad it's totally amazing" category. Mark my words, this will contend for the best and/or worst album art of the year. Click for larger image:

hercules and love affair

I found this track from DFA's next sure-to-be-huge-thing, Hercules and Love Affair, over at 20jazzfunkgreats. The duo only has a limited 12" single available at this point, but will release their debut on DFA sometime later this year. Check the band's myspace page for "Roar," which features guest vocals from Antony.
