new Tapes 'n Tapes mp3: "hang them all"
It's safe to say that Walk It Off, the upcoming LP from our friends Tapes 'n Tapes, is one of my most anticipated albums of '08. Any worries fans had about Dave Fridmann possibly tinkering too much with the band's sound -- I'll admit, I was slightly concerned -- are erased upon first listen to the buzzing, anthemic "Hang Them All." Fans of The Loon are going to love this one:

this song is immeasurably weak. the lyrics are shit. the voice is shit. it's recorded like that band at yr highschool who got the money saved to record, like, a REAL DEMO, at, like, a REAL STUDIO. i bet the dude who produced this track was all texting his girl and smoking a cigarette all like 'sounds good boys. you've still got fifteen minutes on the hour, want to run through another?"

I think it's pretty average. I think you can find a band playing these white boy funk riffs in any town and at any school. The drumming is good, but that's about it.
As for the recording - maybe the FLAC is better, but the mp3 sounds like absolute doo through headphones - it's mastered and compressed to hell.
Course these guys are way more successful than me, so what do I know.

I like the lyrics, sounds like the loon (which I loved) but different enough. Although, I had to turn down the pre-amp decibel level before it sounded good. weird. I have to say, on the surface this band seems kind of sophomoric, but repeated listening has proven their depth of lyrics and composition. give the entirety of the loon two good listens and the haters might change their minds.
I was skeptical about Fridman too but you have to admit this song is pretty damn good.

"Walk it Off" is great and after a few full listens i think its a step in the right direction!
Although "the Loon" is better (but so are most debuts, then again most memories are better than the present)

Ehhh I like this song. Song + musicality are good. Lyrics are something left to be desired. why? it reminds me of the annoying thing aesop rock does...you'll only understand it it you personally know aesop rock. that or it tries to get too clever/ lost in word play that it's really obvious and just makes the guy look a little stupid.
But what the hell, I just bought a ticket to see them here in vancouver. it better be good. us vancouverites are picky people.
