albums of 2008 (so far) part II

Sort of anticlimactic after yesterday's post, but here's the list of my favorite albums of '08. So far, I mean:

01. White Denim - 11 Songs

my opinion matters just about as much as the rest, but i must say that Miami Ice by Icy Demons is incredible. it's out in Japan & will hit stateside in a month or so. they're one of only a handful that are actually pulling off something new and everyone's gonna pretend they've loved them for years once they hear it.

also, The British Expeditionary Force's Chapter One is completely brilliant (but while it technically came out at the very end of 07, i think a lot of folks missed it somehow)and is most unlike anything else out right now - for the better.

Can I leave a small rant? Me, you, and your hot second cousin all have Microcastle at this point. And yet it's not slated to be released for several more months? Huh? In this day and age, why lock the "content" this early if you aren't going to release it soon? The chances of it not being leaked are between 0% and 0.0%. Seems counterproductive. When it finally does hit, it'll hit with a whimper when it should have hit with a bang.

Wicked list, Chris. I need to listen to "Air France", the two mp3s I've listened from them are great - they remind me of the avalanches, good summer music. If the rest of the album is as good as this it's a winner.

I haven't considered my list yet, there's 3 records on your list I love and the rest I'm yet to hear, been listening to old music mostly but lately I find myself stuck with:

Scott Tuma - not for nobody

I'm excited to hear about the new sigur ros as well, saw them live one week ago and they were mesmerizing.

For now, I'll go with (and I'm not sure where to begin placing Deerhunter quite yet, so I'm leaving them out):

1) Fleet Foxes- Self-Titled
2) Wolf Parade- At Mount Zoomer
3) Beach House- Devotion
4) Silver Jews- Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea
5) Why?- Alopecia
6) No Age- Nouns
7) Portishead- Third
8) The Ruby Suns- Sea Lion
9) The Dodos- Visiter
10) Dan Friel- Ghost Town
11) Born Ruffians- Red, Yellow, and Blue

Sorry, I'm also not so strong-willed to avoid mentioning 'preorder' albums. The Fleet Foxes LP helped this decision some; maybe when Wolf Parade's LP arrives at my door, it'll give them the boost to first, even. Also, I must say thanks for some good recommendations such as White Denim, Wale and Air France.
Although they aren't here, I enjoy them quite a bit. I wish My Morning Jacket could've been here, on my list, if only they had released a solid album. Humph.

Finally, it's quite possible Au's Verbs, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, The Black Keys, Shearwater and Cut Copy among others should be mentioned here. I'd think more on it, but I've gots work. Do you bloggers even do that?

7:41 AM
Blogger Michael T. said...

Oh, and uh, if we're talking EPs, lets mention Fleet Foxes' Sun Giant EP, AC's Water Curses, Air France's No Way Down, The Cool Kids' The Bake Sale EP and maybe Dirt Dress' Theme Songs EP (can be found on cokemachineglow.com).

I might be biased considering I am the biggest Bonnie Prince fan in the world. However his new album is the best he produced since 1999 I see a darkness. Better with each listen.
I must agree with a previous commenter who stated that our lists SHOULD NOT resemble each others. We are are all different and so are our tastes. Evereryone is entitled to their own opinions and no one person's is worth more or less than anyone else. Be thankful that we have an abundance of resources to discover new music. Its way more fun to listen to music than type about it. Many people online seem to lose sight of this. Happy listening!! Nate Austin, Tx

Absolutely brilliant response by everyone. I enjoy the idea of sharing individual tastes instead of ripping on individual tastes (stereogum, and yes I see the irony).

With that said, Top 10;

2) Vampire Weekend – S/T
3) Born Ruffians – Red, Yellow and Blue
4) MGMT – Oracular Spectacular
5) Frightened Rabbits – The Midnight Organ Fight
6) Grand Archives – S/T
7) Los Campesinos – Hold on Now, Youngster
8) Vetiver – Thing of the Past
9) Tokyo Police Club – Elephant Shell

I am actually in 10th Grade and I am a male.

Apparently I was under the understanding that it was 'my' personal top 10 albums of 2008 thus far.

Please let me "borrow" your enlightened ears for one weekend, I am sure I would leard so much of your musical wisdom.

By the by, what were you listening to as a 9th grader entering 10th grade? Seriously, just curious (because I consider myself to be far ahead of a lot of my classmates).

Could someone please pyscho-analyze people that seem to "ambush" these threads with the "I cannot believe what you listen to..." threads.

I just cannot wrap my hands around the type of personality that would be so insulted by someone else's taste...

An example: Ketchup? You don't like ketchup on your hot dog? What kinda f'n fool are you? Open your taste buds, everyone knows mustard is the only condiment for a hot dog.
