William said...: it was pretty neat in and of itself but there seems to be something wrong with covering a song in front of a bunch of white kids that know shit about tribe, or would prefer lykke's version because of the, i would say, misguided preference of (trendy)white people for everything dainty. the common complaint is that most likely these white kids know nothing of or care very little for the context from which tribe was born (yes, a racial, class-based issue), the sentiment being that a beautiful white girl is singing a genre of music that has been popularized in the past 30-odd years by her class opposite. the rhetorical question, to the point, is, "can just anyone make rap?" at least, in the way that tribe played it? "can just anyone appreciate rap?" maybe the genre can be used (maybe!) but THIS song about the lives of THESE people? the song is part of an ethnography made better by the culmination of the members of tribe and their experience. lyyke singing it is one thing but in front of all these white kids?...BLECH!; 8:53 PM
km said...: i like lykke, and i enjoyed this cover when she did it in SF. while i enjoyed her preformance, it didnt seem big enough... this girl has major stage presence, and on a lot of the songs (the ones with chorus backing or orchestration) they used pre-recorded bits and played along which really didnt do it for me. this girl needs a whole orchestra, and a chorus, behind her. she can handle it!; 5:53 PM
