new chad vangaalen :: willow tree
"When I'm dead is when I'll be free."--Chad VanGaalen
As I mentioned in a previous post about the new Chad VanGaalen-produced LP from Calgary's Women, VanGaalen has always maintained an affinity for antiquated recording gear. So much so, in fact, that his forthcoming Soft Airplane LP was recorded "primarily on an old tape machine and a JVC ghetto blaster" in the familiar confines of Chad's own Calgary basement. If the album's stellar opening track -- which Sub Pop kindly sent over yesterday -- is indicative of the rest of the record, this was a wise aesthetic choice by Mr. VanGaalen. "Willow Tree" is a lilting, almost uplifting (or at least liberating) lo-fi folk-pop ballad, on which VanGaalen candidly confronts one of his favorite themes: death.
