lykke li + bon iver :: "dance dance dance"

I understand that Lykke Li has a bit of a crush on Bon Iver, so apparently she asked Justin Vernon and crew to lend their talents to this impromptu version of "Dance Dance Dance," shot Take Away Show-style around a fountain in L.A. Featuring some nice sunny harmonies and never-before-seen dance moves from Ms. Li:

new empire of the sun

Empire of the Sun's forthcoming Walking on a Dream LP is one of my most anticipated albums that's still left to be released in '08, based solely on the strength of the sublime title track. Until now. Luke Steele + Nick Littlemore are streaming 5 album tracks on their myspace page, and despite the totally annoying new myspace music interface, they're definitely worth a listen. "Standing on the Shore" is particularly tight. You can also stream an additional track here. Walking on a Dream is out October 4.

little joy :: live in san francisco

Fab Moretti, Rodrigo Amarante, + Binki Shapiro // Little Joy :: San Francisco

We might've mentioned a time or two that we fell in love instantly with Little Joy's irresistible debut LP. Unfortunately, the group has no immediate plans to visit Texas, but our good friends Hobi + Zach hit up the band's show last night at the Indie in San Francisco, Polaroid machine in hand. They report that the evening saw a lot of instrument trading, with Fab spending the majority of the night on guitar and playing drums on one song, and Devendra Banhart joining in on percussion/keys/guitar for much of the set. Sounds like a good time. Now come to TX, Little Joys. Here are some photos:

Austin City Limits Festival 2008

As usual, this year's Austin City Limits Festival was a laid back affair, made even more pleasant than normal by the relatively balmy weather -- we were blessed with a nice steady breeze, and even a few occasional clouds this year -- but I spent most of the fest running around trying to see as much as possible. Here are some highlights:

david byrne

In addition to being the nicest dudes, Fleet Foxes' harmonies were every bit as heavenly as advertised, and their "bailout humor" banter was great. Spiritualized sounded amazing from afar, with "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space" acting as an absolutely perfect score for the setting sun. David Byrne was one of my (and everyone else's) most anticipated sets of the fest, and he didn't let us down. The Talking Heads stuff was brilliant, as expected, and despite me being embarrassingly unfamiliar with the majority of his solo material and his new collaboration with Eno, Byrne's set was one of the most thoroughly engaging things I saw all weekend.

erykah badu

The best set of the fest: Erykah Badu. Dallas' own Ms. Badu finally rolled onstage fashionably late, almost 15 minutes after her scheduled set time, to the sounds of Weezy's "A Milli" (specifically the line, "Where is Erykah Badu at?," obvs). She broke out most of her old classics, gave her new friends in MMJ a shout out, and delivered an unbelievably soulful, chillingly powerful version of "The Healer," cementing the song as one of my favorites of the year. Sidenote: also saw Beck and some of the cast from Friday Night Lights -- Lyla Garrity, holler -- checking out Badu's set from backstage.

david byrne

Some other assorted observations: Beck opened his set with "Loser," Jenny Lewis sounded good but was unfortunately relegated to a tent, Jamie Lidell should be more famous than he is, teenage girls really love Vampire Weekend, Hot Chip probably could/should have headlined on Friday, and the amazing Sharon Jones is now 3-for-3 at fests I've attended this summer. Lowlights: I ran out of film before Sunday, and I regrettably never ran into Bill Murray. That's about it. Here are some photos; make sure to check our friend Chad Wadsworth's still-expanding ACL set for more.

coconot

Our friends at Funeral Pudding recently put up a rad post detailing Barcelona's thriving, vibrant music scene (and more specifically, the adventurous DC/Luv Luv label). The highlight for me was this colorful, swirling new tropical pop jam from El Guincho's other project, Coconot, taken from the band's forthcoming record, Cosa Astral (due in November). Okay, I'll concede that this sounds vaguely similar to some of the newer Animal Collective material, but in this case that's a good thing:

keep me in mind

In case you somehow missed this the other day, Rough Trade is now "officially" streaming "Keep Me in Mind," one of the Strokes-iest (and best) songs from Little Joy's awesome self-titled debut LP:

You can also now pre-order the record on vinyl here for 12 bucks. Fab Moretti and crew will kick off a U.S. tour in November, but first they'll play a few shows (starting tonight) on the West Coast with Devendra's Megapuss. Hopefully Dev won't break this thing out (link extremely NSFW).

Since hearing his haunted cover of Burial's "Archangel," I've made it a habit to hit up Banjo or Freakout's blog on a regular basis. He continues to drop daily gems over there, including this killer cover of Invisible Conga People's "Cable Dazed." Banjo or Freakout lifts the darkly thrilling original version up into a murky, almost unrecognizable haze, eventually allowing it to dissolve altogether into the ether. Both jams, however, make for essential early A.M. listening:

new deerhoof video :: "fresh born"

Here's the new video for Deerhoof's "Fresh Born," from their upcoming Offend Maggie LP. This nonsensical, slightly disorienting clip stars a confrontational stuffed gorilla with a mini-baseball bat, alleviating those concerns from the other day that the band had shed some of its collective eccentricity. Turns out that's not the case at all. Can't wait to see these guys at FFFFest.

nite jewel

nite jewel

L.A.'s Nite Jewel records her otherwordly, wilfully lo-fi dance jams "solely on portable 8-track cassette deck, often composing her songs by layered tape edits." The results sound like a perfect, hazy union between the sweetly bizarre experimental avant-pop of her friends Ariel Pink and Tickley Feather, and the dreamy cosmic disco of Italians Do It Better heroes Glass Candy and Chromatics. Or something not too far from that, anyway. Of course, she's also been described as sounding like Debbie Deb if she "...got a xanax script and drank a ton of cough syrup," so let's just go with that.

mp3:
nite jewel :: weak 4 me
nite jewel :: chimera

("Chimera" mp3 via one of my new favorite daily reads, No Pain in Pop.)

Nite Jewel has a split double-12" single with Glass Candy coming out next month on Italians Do It Better. Her Good Evening LP is due November 1 on Human Ear Music.

sibylle baier

Back in early 2006, I became enamored with with a mostly unknown German folk singer -- who hadn't recorded in over 30 years -- by the name of Sibylle Baier. Her stunning and almost uncomfortably intimate Colour Green LP (recorded in the early '70s and released for the first time in '06 ) was one of my favorite releases of that year, and still gets quite a bit of play around here. I wasn't counting on any new material from her, but her son recently posted a brand new song from Ms. Baier, written for an upcoming Wim Wenders film. Take a listen here.

best new premature on repeat : little joy

Little Joy is the new project from Rodrigo Amarante, Binki Shapiro, and everyone's favorite Stroke, Fab Moretti. From the glorious calypso-garage-folk of the opening track, "The Next Time Around," the band's self-titled debut LP is a simple, tastefully executed affair, anchored by perfectly classic melodies and Noah Georgeson's warm production. It's uncanny how much Amarante sounds like Julian Casablancas at times, and the Binki Shapiro-fronted tracks (like the irresistible "Unattainable") are a wonderful change of pace. Shapiro's exquisite melodies and elegant vocals maintain a genuine innocence, ultimately resembling something you'd hear on a '40s AM radio dial. The band recently put a few tracks up on myspace; here's the remarkably Strokes-esque "Keep Me in Mind."

Little Joy's relative brevity also works in its favor; it breezes by in just about 30 minutes, which would explain why I've listened to the thing in its entirety about 12 times in the last couple days. The record feels like an authentic, pretense-free effort from Moretti and crew -- no affect, just easy and pleasant, and without question the best of all the emerging Strokes side projects. Nice cover art, too. Little Joy comes out November 4 on Rough Trade, and the band will play a handful of West Coast shows at the end of this month.

RATATAT :: live in dallas

mike + evan // RATATAT in dallas

RATATAT played to possibly the most crowded house I've ever seen at the Granada Theater last night. Nearly 1300 adoring RATATAT fans (who knew?) packed the joint, and the band played a rousing, airtight set -- accompanied by their signature trippy visuals -- that drew pretty equally from all 3 LPs. Even during the band's most droning, psychedelic moments, the night felt like one big dance party, and the kids totally lost their collective shit at the first note of "Wildcat." Good job Dallas, you surprise me sometimes.

white hinterland :: luniculaire

White Hinterland auteur Casey Dienel will follow up her beautiful, wintry Phylactery Factory LP with an adventurous exploration of '60s French avant-pop on her essential new Luniculaire EP. The 5-song EP consists of three extremely ambitious and inspired covers of genre classics, and two outstanding new originals from Ms. Dienel (both in French, of course). While it's probably impossible for anyone to touch Francoise Hardy's sublime rendering of "Mon Amie La Rose" or Serge Gainsbourg's ridiculously cool "Requiem Por Un Con, Dienel definitely comes close here, making each of those standards her own. And the stunning originals that Dienel penned for the EP are even better: "Chant de Grillon" vaguely recalls the eerie textural dissonance of the Arcade Fire's "I'm Sleeping in a Submarine," but the song reaches another level on the strength of Dienel's haunting vocals:

photos: Monolith Festival '08

Although the stunning venue and perfect weather might've played a small part, the 2008 Monolith Festival was one of the most enjoyable festival-going experiences I've had in a long time. Not sure if it topped day one, but here are some highlights from day two: All 4'11" of Sharon Jones absolutely killed James Brown's "It's a Man's Man's Man's World," Band of Horses played a couple of great new songs and a rad Them Two cover, Tilly and the Wall's new stuff sounded surprisingly great, and Lovefoxxx of CSS brought the party in the most ridiculous getup I've ever seen. Also, as I alluded to earlier, TVOTR almost didn't even make it to the venue, then showed up with minutes to spare (looking sort of frazzled, I might add) and proceeded to play the defining set of the whole fest. Finally, Justice had the place bumping for the entirety of their set -- which was cut short due to technical difficulties -- to close out the party. I'll definitely be back next year. walking with jesus

the muslims :: live at red rocks (photo / click for larger image)

Day one of the Monolith Festival was a rousing success, thanks in large part to the unreal weather and spectacular views at the impossibly picturesque venue. There were bands, too: highlights from yesterday included Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Holy Fuck, JV, Blitzen Trapper, Cut Copy, and White Denim (not necessarily in that order). But the best set from a band I hadn't seen before was delivered by San Diego's the Muslims. The Strokes comparisons kept popping up all day, mostly due to frontman Matt Lamkin's detached, almost bored stage presence, but the band's best, most raucous moments recalled a surf-punk version of the Monks, which is the highest compliment I could pay these dudes. Great band, and I highly recommend picking up their badass bullethole-ridden 12" before it's gone. Here's a Spaceman 3 cover the band played, taken from their upcoming Parasites 7", which I just pre-ordered here:

finland is the new sweden

From Paavoharju to Lau Nau, some of the most beautiful, enchantingly bizarre pop music I've posted about this year has come from an unlikely source: the Nordic nation of Finland, and more specifically, the wonderful Fonal label. This admittedly has something to do with my fascination with the Finnish language; it's not exactly graceful, and at times it can even be a little jarring, but it has an entirely alien quality about it that I find really endearing. Anyway, here are a couple more weird-ass Finnish artists that I've been digging lately:

*********************************************

Eleanoora Rosenholm

Eleanoora Rosenholm's new Älä kysy kuolleilta, he sanoivat LP comes out this week in Finland, and next month everywhere else. This is stunning, dramatic dance-pop (in the loosest sense) with an icy, crystalline beauty, despite the fact that this stuff is apparently all about the band's morbid fixation on death and desolation. This band makes the Knife seem completely normal. According to Fonal:
"Eleanoora Rosenholm and her six orphan brothers step up on the altar hunted by an unexplainable grief and misery. The nun has been desecrated in the monastery and the schools principal mutilated in the primary schools woodshed. A russian prisoner of war draws his last breath on a snowy potatoe field. The relentless fist of war strikes fire in the horizon. We will never understand why things in life turn out the way they do, for they form and grow deeper meaning despite of us. Chaos has its own will and its boot does not step to the General officers lash."
Finnish people scare me. Here's the video/mp3 for the record's first single:

mp3:
eleanoora rosenholm :: tammen varjossa

*********************************************

Lauri from Paavoharju told me about his friend Joose Keskitalo, and his new LP, Joose Keskitalo ja Kolmas Maailmanpalo. Keskitalo, who sings on some of Paavoharju's newer material, may look like Jens Lekman's slightly disturbed older brother, but his delicate, sentimental, and at times sinister (I'm projecting, here) pop music transcends the language barrier. Here are a couple of songs from the album; I would recommend purchasing it, but I can't find it anywhere on the internet, as Fonal is currently sold out (thanks to Moka for the mp3).

hyperdub

Those with even a casual/passing interest in dubstep are going to want to check this recent 27-minute BBC Radio 1 session, featuring Hyperdub's resident MC the Spaceape flowing over an insane live set from dubstep luminary Kode9. By the way, this was mentioned in the latest edition of Pitchfork's essential "The Month in Grime/Dubstep" column, in which Martin Clark says of the session:
"Released from the confines of the dancefloors' need for linear percussion or bass-reaction, the duo push on into an incredible headspace of dissonant sour spots and unstable arrangements. Deliciously sweet melodies flicker in, competing with FM radio snippets, opera blasts or offkey p-funk stabs, tied together with Spaceape's dystopian fiction. It's shockingly next level."
It starts getting really dope around the time Kode9 loops a RZA beat from Liquid Swords. You're going to want to break out the headphones for this one:

ruby suns + esau mwamwaya cover the beatles

Thanks to all-around good guy YANP for the tip on this one. I've probably mentioned eight times by now that the Ruby Suns are collaborating with Esau Mwamwaya on his upcoming LP. What I didn't know is that Esau also joined the band on their gloriously uplifting afro-beat cover of "Birthday," confirming that everything the man touches indeed turns immediately to gold. It's the circle of life, bitches:

vivian girls live on wfmu

Vivian Girls stopped by the WMFU studios recently for a live session, during which they mixed in a few new reverb-laden girl group jams among tracks from their self-titled debut. Still can't get enough of those harmonies. Here are a couple songs from the session; the station's Beware of the Blog has all nine tracks for download here.

I'm sort of feeling this new Q-Tip song. And while it's not exactly A Tribe Called Quest, at least it's not "Vivrant Thing" either. Hopefully this bodes well for Tip's upcoming LP, The Renaissance (due out in November).

dirty

Here's the new video for Salem's "Dirt," taken from the band's unclassifiable Yes I Smoke Crack EP (out now on Acephale). The unsettling clip -- which the band directed themselves -- is dark, disorienting, and more than a little terrifying. Oh, and definitely NSFW or anywhere else. The song kicks in just after the one minute mark, and totally justifies my favorite description of these guys (from TTL): "the Cocteau Twins on a dirty south kick." Get uncomfortable:

Salem has two myspace pages. Yes I Smoke Crack is basically sold out everywhere, but you still might be able to find copies of the white vinyl 7" here or here.

chairlift in new iPod nano ad

I've briefly mentioned how much I like Brooklyn's Chairlift, and their new album Does You Inspire You continues to get quite a bit of play around here ("Planet Health" is still amazing). Apparently the dudes at Apple are fans too, as the band's bittersweet love song "Bruises" is featured in the soon-to-be-everywhere new "nano-chromatic" ad. Congrats to the band, this song deserves to be a hit. At least something good came out of that lame "Let's Rock" event from yesterday.

mp3: new Gang Gang Dance :: "princes"

Saint Dymphna is the adventurous, genre-spanning new LP from Gang Gang Dance. "Princes," featuring East London's illest MC, Tinchy Stryder, is perhaps the most arresting, out of left field, interstellar-dancefloor-ready track on an album full of kaleidoscopic jams. Tinchy's "trying to get mainstream money," which would explain the urgency with which he attacks this insane Gang Gang beat. GGD's label calls it "the weirdest Grime track (or the weirdest Gang Gang Dance track for that matter) you've ever heard," and I would tend to agree with that sentiment. It's also my favorite track on the record:

mp3:

mp3: new Chromatics :: "Lady"

Hell yes. It's been way too long since we heard from Chromatics, so this just-released demo made my night. Sounds like an entirely new and much improved re-working of In Shining Violence track "Lady." Ruth Radelet's vocals are as detached and sexy as ever, and Johnny Jewel's always stellar production is particularly nuts on this one:

Here's the first song to surface from Deerhoof's highly-anticipated new record. Offend Maggie's title track suggests a sweeter, gentler, more subdued and accessible Deerhoof. Let's hope that's not the case, although this is a nice little ditty (if a little too short).

I ordered Vivian Girls' Wild Eyes 7" back in June from Brooklyn's Plays With Dolls records, solely for the b-side, "My Baby Wants Me Dead," which is only available on the limited single. Anyway, it recently occurred to me that I never received it, so I headed over to the girls' myspace page to find a note warning, "Do not buy one from Plays with Dolls. You will not receive it!" Son of a bitch. Of course, the thing has since sold out and is now out-of-print, and currently fetching over 40 bucks on ebay (when you can find one). Luckily, a friend sent me the mp3, which I'll assume is ripped directly from the now very difficult to obtain 7".

on repeat :: get back guinozzi !

I recently discovered the irresistibly eccentric pop of France's Get Back Guinozzi ! after stumbling upon the group's myspace. The band lists Talking Heads, Can, Tom Tom Club, Jamaican DJs, cheerleaders, and bicycles among their influences, but the two awesome songs on their page sound sort of like an adorable, playful union between Deerhoof, '60s yé-yé, Tropicalia, and maybe some vintage Slits. This one is particularly great, and the band was nice enough to send over the mp3:

mp3:

Make sure to check out "Where Are You" and add Get Back Guinozzi ! as a friend here. The band are apparently set to sign with Fat Cat, and will play their first show ever on September 19 in Paris, one day before playing Open Circuit with Animal Collective, Frightened Rabbit, and others in Belgium. So yeah, I imagine they'll be all over the place in the not so distant future.

album art of the year?

walking on a dream (click for larger image)

I can't get enough of Empire of the Sun's perfect end-of-summer single, "Walking on a Dream," which has quickly become one of my favorite songs of the year, and accompanies me just about everywhere I go lately. Thanks to James for sending over the just-released, epically fantastical art for the duo's debut record, which was inspired by the time Luke Steele + Nick Littlemore spent in Shanghai filming their first video. Can't wait to hear the full record -- due out in October -- but here's a remix of the first single from Nick's big brother, Sam La More:

temper

temper

I've been immersed in Benoit Pioulard's hazy and haunting new record all afternoon, and while I really loved his last effort, my initial thoughts are that this one is even better. Recorded in both Michigan (the first half) and Portland (the second), Pioulard discusses how the change of scenery affected the recording of Temper:
"My mindset when I still lived in Michigan was a lot of anticipation and uncertainty, so I think that definitely affected the songs I recorded while I was there. And when I got here I found a lot of sudden inspiration in my new surroundings, different circumstances and everything that I'm sure had an effect on the songs I recorded thereafter so sequentially it's almost chronological. There are a couple songs that are out of order, but the first half is, for the most part, from the first part of the year, and the second part is absolutely from the latter half."
That "sudden inspiration" might explain why the second half of this record is made up of some of the best songs I've heard this year, including these two. Read the rest of the interview here.

Temper is out October 14 on Kranky. Pioulard will also offer a limited number of handmade copies, which promise to be amazing if they're anything like the handmade versions of Precis. Watch the video for "Idyll" here. Pioulard also takes beautiful Polaroids; view his photos here.

Weird Tapes is one of the guys from Philly's Hail Social. He sent over his blissful Get Religion EP today, and I've been zoning out to this thing all evening. Warped strains of vaguely familiar melodies -- I think I heard some Boards of Canada, Van Halen, Michael McDonald, and Isley Brothers (or Ice Cube), among others -- fade in and out, swirling and floating up into an ethereal cosmic disco haze. catchdubs x the '90s

Okay, this rules. Nick Catchdubs just posted his latest mix up on his Fool's Gold blog. The mix features seemingly every single band that played Lollapalooza from '92-'96, not to mention every other band you liked in the '90s, including Nirvana, Pavement, Beck, Sonic Youth, A Tribe Called Quest, Tripping Daisy(!), and many more, as well as countless recognizable audio snippets from your favorite '90s flicks/cartoons. Catchdubs says:
"Even with double digit-old tunes, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter feels right on time, connecting the dots between Sonic Youth breakbeats, weeded Lollapalooza rap, gloriously fuzzed-out one hit wonders and much more. No irony, no empty nostalgia, just a lot of music we love that shaped what we do today."
