so haunted

(photo)

Here's a short Halloween compilation, made up of appropriately haunting sounds that I've posted here or encountered on other blogs over the past few months. The songs included here range from the darkly cinematic (Quiet Village, Gatekeeper) to the mildly unsettling (Paavoharju, Salem) to the fully terrifying (Delia Derbyshire), but together they make a decent soundtrack for whatever haunted festivities you plan on getting into this evening:

mp3:
01 grouper :: disengaged
02 delia derbyshire :: dreams part 4: sea (1964 UK radio)
03 salem :: sweat
04 gatekeeper :: final approach
05 weird tapes :: nightstalking
06 chromatics :: house of models (demo)
07 quiet village :: circus of horrors
08 paavoharju :: kevatrumpu
09 fever ray :: if i had a heart (instrumental)
10 kria brekkan :: wildering
11 banjo or freakout :: archangel (burial cover)
12 pocahaunted :: riddim queen (edit)

VEGA x RAD

The best scene in the best BMX movie ever, set to the decidedly retro-futuristic sounds of VEGA's "All Too Vivid." Also, Aunt Becky has only gotten hotter over the last 20 years. (thanks, Butter Team):

listen to little joy

One of my most listened to (and posted about) albums of this fall has been Fab Moretti and crew's warm and charming lo-fi self-titled debut LP as Little Joy. The record finally comes out next week on Rough Trade, but you can hear the whole thing now at the band's myspace page. Little Joy also has a few TX dates lined up on their upcoming tour, including a stop in Dallas on Thanksgiving Eve.

give it back

Sweden's Love Is All dressed up for Halloween a little early this year to record spooky videos for each track on their upcoming A Hundred Things Keep Me up at Night LP (due out November 11). Their attempt to look scary sort of backfires though, as Josephine just ends up looking even more adorable than usual. These are going to be all over the place in the next couple days, so try to catch them all; here's the clip for album standout "Give it Back."

High Places has designed the third installment in the New Era x The Fader series of extremely limited band-designed fitteds. They follow up the Panda Bear and No Age-designed joints with this smiley, gold-toothed, War-inspired effort pictured above. At the very least, it's the perfect accessory to complete your hipster costume. We've got one to give away; just leave your name in the comments and I'll pick a winner next week.

recursion

Once again, Montreal's CFCF turns me on to a band I've never listened to -- this time it's Philly "cyber-grindcore"(?) act Genghis Tron -- via one of his icy smooth extended remixes, as he takes us on a 7+ minute celestial trip to nowhere in particular:

friendly fires cover lykke li

The UK's Friendly Fires are supporting Swedish pop heroine Lykke Li on her current, mostly sold-out U.S. tour (thanks for skipping TX, guys). Before they left their home in St. Albans, they kicked out this cosmic-disco* cover of Lykke's "I'm Good I'm Gone," which Beggars was kind enough to send over for us to premiere. If you're up for even more danceable Friendly Fires, go here to grab an awesome new remix of the band's "Paris" by the great Aeroplane, complete with vocals from Au Revoir Simone.

mp3:
friendly fires :: i'm good i'm gone (lykke li cover)

In other Lykke Li cover-related news, her Little Bit single is out now in the UK, and features Lykke's previously unreleased cover of Wendy Rene's "After Laughter," perhaps best known for its use by the RZA as a sample on a Wu-Tang classic. The single also features this remix that we posted a while back, courtesy of DFA's Tim Goldsworthy (bonus remix by TX's own Aether not included on single):

lil' wayne :: live in new orleans

Voodoo Festival '08 had more than its share of highlights, including the Dirtbombs, TV On The Radio, another inspired set by an extremely pregnant Erykah Badu, and my personal favorite performance of the weekend, courtesy of the Black Godfather. But the local kid was obviously the big draw this year, and with the setting sun as his backdrop, Weezy delivered an animated and enthusiastic Tha Carter III-heavy set for his adoring hometown crowd. Some pictures:

devil's trident 7"

I don't think I've read one positive review of Telepathe's live show, but based on the only two songs I've heard from them (see below), I'm pretty interested in checking them out on the Mad Decent megatour. Also, I'm a big fan of the band's "sell the vinyl-only single/give the mp3 away for free" approach, and it appears to be working out well. The Chrome's On It 7" has long since sold out, and the new(er) Devil's Trident single is available now via Merok:

new atlas sound :: "halloween dances"

Bradford Cox strikes me as the kind of dude who watches It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown every single year. The two new Atlas Sound tracks that Bradford just posted to his blog don't necessarily confirm that theory, but the fact that he calls them "Halloween Dances" suggests that Cox is pretty fond of the holiday, and either song would work well as an addition to the cartoon's classic nostalgia-inducing score:

Not much info available at this point other than "new album out early 2009" (on the Knife's own Rabid Records), but a reader sent over a link to this foreboding preview track from the Fever Ray website. witch greens

"the only band we like is nirvana. the only album we like is nevermind. the only song we like is smells like teen spirit"--Harlem

You might recall Austin's Harlem from that time I talked about them this past summer. It's been a few weeks since I broke out their raucous free drugs;-) LP, but I stumbled across this new video for album opener "witch greens" (directed by Daniel Hill) and was reminded just how rad these guys are. Definitely one of my favorite new Austin bands. You just can't argue with a refrain like "I'm into shit that you don't even know," plus that one guy is still wearing his "I Like Turtles" costume:

We haven't heard from the Hockey Night dudes in a couple years, but their Thin Lizzy-cribbing "Dark Trance" still gets some play around here on occasion. Looking forward to seeing where the DFA crew takes this.

white denim releases first US LP :: exposion

white denim :: exposion

Austin's White Denim is set to digitally release their debut US LP, Exposion, tomorrow via Topspin, the same method chosen by David Byrne/Brian Eno for their latest record. This is essentially a brand new platform, so I'm not entirely familiar with all that it entails, but some of the key features include:
  • Directly from band to fan
  • Ability to listen to tracks, buy individual songs, bundle the whole record, download artwork and lyrics, etc.
  • optional subscription service (limited 7", limited live tracks, vids, artwork by steve, etc)
  • Ability to get songs in FLAC format with album art
I guess you go here to sign up, and they'll let you know when it's available to purchase (in advance of the November 3 physical release date). WD also promises to "inundate you with music, video, drawrings, and more." The band headlines a sold-out show tonight at NYC's Mercury Lounge, and will play again tomorrow night at Union Hall.

This was a nice surprise to wake up to this morning (thanks Scott). Officially scheduled to be released on November 1, here's the debut (free) mixtape from Esau Mwamwaya + Radioclit, aka the Very Best, complete with absolutely fitting The Lion King-esque artwork. song(s) of the night

It's a rare occasion that two worthy Balearic(ish) slow-motion disco songs show up in my mailbox on the same day. One's from San Francisco, the other from Sweden, and both are late night beach jams intended to make you lament the onset of autumn (depending on your locale):

mp3:
windsurf :: pocket check
pallers :: humdrum

"Pocket Check" is kind of old, but will appear on Windsurf's upcoming Coastlines LP, which is due out October 27 via Prins Thomas' Internasjonal label. "Humdrum" is brand new, and will appear on Pallers' debut EP, due out December 3 on Sweden's esteemed, mostly indie-pop Labrador label. Labrador calls Pallers' sound, "dance music for the lazy, the blazers and for the slightly depressed."

young disciples

I've long been a devoted fan of Numero Group's uniformly stellar Eccentric Soul compilation series, and their latest release, Eccentric Soul: The Young Disciples -- composed of 21 lost gems from East St. Louis' Young Disciples collective from the late '60s/early '70s -- is among the strongest of the bunch. From the label:
"With nearly eighty local youths involved from both sides of the Mississippi, the Young Disciples (named for one of the area’s most notorious gangs) encompassed solo acts, duos, male and female vocal groups, a massive horn section and a troupe. Every sweat-drenched recording included here emerged from this grass-roots organization that changed, if not saved, lives."
The whole thing is essential, but it's the three songs from Sharen Clark & the Product of Time that have been on repeat. In particular, this heartwrenching soul ballad from 1970 makes the fact that we've never heard of Ms. Clark before feel like a huge injustice:

mp3:

New Paw Tracks signee Dent May was discovered by the Animal Collective dudes while they were recording Merriweather Post Pavilion down in May's hometown of Oxford, Mississippi. Here's the Tropicalia-tinged first track from his forthcoming The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukelele LP, which was inspired by the likes of Serge Gainsbourg + Lee Hazlewood:

The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukelele was recorded by Rusty Santos in May's double-wide trailer in Taylor, MS, and
is out February 3, 2009, on Paw Tracks. Featuring album art (pictured above) by the immensely talented Will Bryant.

diplo x radiohead 2.0

Turns out that first Diplo remix that Radiohead posted up to their "Reckoner" remix contest page wasn't quite finished, but Diplo has upped a new "tame kangaroo version" to Mad Decent's site. This is a post-official-remix version, but the Beirut sample(?) is still intact, with this one extended a bit and "a lil more clubworked..."

last post on this panda bear remix (seriously)

Our friends at Domino just hooked us up with a copy of the Boneless vinyl 7" to give away. Just leave your name and your favorite Panda Bear song in the comments, and I'll pick a winner on Monday. Also, if you don't own a turntable, you can now buy the 7" digitally for like 2 bucks. Here's the official stream:

Finally, here's the track Panda Bear samples/loops on his version of "Boneless." That sunny tropical guitar tone was deftly lifted from "Lonely Time," a melancholy gem by '70s Canadian psych-folk fam the Brazda Brothers. Noah's got a good ear:

boneless [panda bear version]

It's been an above average night for AC-related happenings. As I mentioned the other day, Panda Bear's "remix" of the Notwist's "Boneless" is really more a full-on reimagining, with Noah turning the song into his own warm, blissfully breezy tropical jam (that almost sounds like it could've come from the Person Pitch sessions). Here's the full song, which I've had on repeat for the last hour, courtesy of collected animals:

I'm sure it sounds even better on vinyl. Order the Boneless 7" here for $4.56.

2. My Girls
3. Also Frightened
4. Summertime Clothes (live video)
5. Daily Routine (live video)
6. Bluish
7. Guys Eyes
8. Taste (Blogotheque video)
9. Lion in a Coma (live video)
10. No More Runnin (live mp3)
11. Brother Sport

Prediction: "Brother Sport" will make an amazing album-closer:

animal collective :: brother sport (live on npr)
panda bear :: daily routine (live on ma fama)

elsewhere:

To hijack some dude's comment from Youtube, this new video from Ariel Pink/Glass Candy homie Nite Jewel is like "The Exorcist for a dayglo generation." Pretty obvious parallel really, once the projectile vomiting starts. Directed by Travis Peterson, who also directed this Ariel Pink video; hi-res version here.

mp3:
nite jewel :: artificial intelligence (demo)

Look for a Nite Jewel split double-12" single with Glass Candy soon on Italians Do It Better, and her Good Evening LP is due November 1 on Human Ear Music.

new videos from Chromatics + Air France

Here are a couple new(ish) videos in which (spoiler) nothing much ever actually happens, yet both clips manage to remain oddly transfixing throughout. Probably helps that both of these songs rule. First up, Air France's "Windmill Wedding," with a typically ambiguous message attached, courtesy of Sincerely Yours:
"no fantasy, no stupid escape. this is real life, this is you and me. this is real life honey, just wait and see."
Right. More importantly, anyone know what film this was taken from?

And here's an unofficial -- but band approved, and somehow fitting -- short film set to Chromatics' "Hands in the Dark," directed by Sebastien Rippon.

panda bear remixes the notwist

The Notwist released their Boneless 7" today on Domino, and while the original is a fine song in its own right, I ordered the single solely for the b-side: Panda Bear's "sunny, tropicalia tinged remix." However, based on this super lo-fi 1:30 preview excerpt courtesy of Juno, the term "remix" is misleading: this is essentially a brand new Panda Bear song. I normally wouldn't post an excerpt, but come on:

mp3:
the notwist :: boneless (panda bear remix) [excerpt]

The Boneless single is a vinyl exclusive, so if you want to hear the full remix, you're going to have to order the 7" (for now, anyway). Luckily, it'll cost you less than 5 bucks.

let it go

Nick Thorburn's (Unicorns/Islands) new project, Reefer, was inspired by "beautiful tropical surroundings, the sounds of the ocean, and being far away from their regular daily routines." Here, Flying Lotus takes the duo's "Let It Go" to the bottom of the sea, turning the song into an appropriately otherworldly underwater soundscape that wouldn't have been out of place on FlyLo's own Los Angeles LP:

new deerhoof video + mp3 :: "chandelier searchlight"

Deerhoof is back with their second video from Offend Maggie, which came out today on Kill Rock Stars. This awesome little clip -- for one of my favorite songs from the record -- is set in a kid-friendly animated Hades, and features appearances by Cerberus and the River Styx. Created by Clyde Petersen & Forrest Baum:

The band is also giving away the mp3, via their VIRB page:
