One of my most listened to (and posted about) albums of this fall has been Fab Moretti and crew's warm and charming lo-fi self-titled debut LP as Little Joy. The record finally comes out next week on Rough Trade, but you can hear the whole thing now at the band's myspace page. Little Joy also has a few TX dates lined up on their upcoming tour, including a stop in Dallas on Thanksgiving Eve.

Sweden's Love Is All dressed up for Halloween a little early this year to record spooky videos for each track on their upcoming A Hundred Things Keep Me up at Night LP (due out November 11). Their attempt to look scary sort of backfires though, as Josephine just ends up looking even more adorable than usual. Voodoo Festival '08 had more than its share of highlights, including the Dirtbombs, TV On The Radio, another inspired set by an extremely pregnant Erykah Badu, and my personal favorite performance of the weekend, courtesy of the Black Godfather. But the local kid was obviously the big draw this year, and with the setting sun as his backdrop, Weezy delivered an animated and enthusiastic Tha Carter III-heavy set for his adoring hometown crowd. I don't think I've read one positive review of Telepathe's live show, but based on the only two songs I've heard from them (see below), I'm pretty interested in checking them out on the Mad Decent megatour. Also, I'm a big fan of the band's "sell the vinyl-only single/give the mp3 away for free" approach, and it appears to be working out well. The Chrome's On It 7" has long since sold out, and the new(er) Devil's Trident single is available now via Merok:

new atlas sound :: "halloween dances"

Bradford Cox strikes me as the kind of dude who watches It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown every single year. The two new Atlas Sound tracks that Bradford just posted to his blog don't necessarily confirm that theory, but the fact that he calls them "Halloween Dances" suggests that Cox is pretty fond of the holiday, and either song would work well as an addition to the cartoon's classic nostalgia-inducing score:

Fever Ray is the new "Emo / Psychedelic / Ambient" solo project from the Knife's Karin Dreijer. Not much info available at this point other than "new album out early 2009" (on the Knife's own Rabid Records), but a reader sent over a link to this foreboding preview track from the Fever Ray website. This is just the instrumental edit, but it's a promising start; can't wait to hear the full version with Karin's signature haunting vocals:

voodoo festival 2008 :: new orleans

Headed to New Orleans this weekend for the 2008 Voodoo Music Experience, which features an insanely diverse lineup that includes TV On The Radio, Lil' Wayne, R.E.M., Lupe Fiasco, the Dirtbombs, Man Man, Sharon Jones, N.E.R.D., Devotchka, Dallas' own Erykah Badu (the ACL Fest MVP), and many, many more. If you can't make it out to City Park this year, the festival will be streaming live on the Voodoo website, starting about 30 minutes ago.

Glass Candy is throwing a party in Portland this weekend with their friends Nite Jewel and Plano, TX's own Farah. This is the release party for that new Nite Jewel 12" I mentioned a couple weeks ago, and Glass Candy will also be giving away a new b-sides/rarities comp. According to the band:

"...at the party we will be giving away a new Glass Candy cd called DEEP GEMS, which is a collection of singles, b sides, and rarities. in between touring like crazy, glass candy has been in the studio every possible moment working on a new lp for 2009. in the meantime, deep gems is a collection of rare tracks recorded between march 2006 and october 2008..."

You might recall Austin's Harlem from that time I talked about them this past summer. It's been a few weeks since I broke out their raucous free drugs;-) LP, but I stumbled across this new video for album opener "witch greens" (directed by Daniel Hill) and was reminded just how rad these guys are. Definitely one of my favorite new Austin bands. You just can't argue with a refrain like "I'm into shit that you don't even know," plus that one guy is still wearing his "I Like Turtles" costume:

James Murphy is teaming up with Hockey Night to make "a classic rock record," due sometime in "the first half of next year." According to the BBC's Rodrigo Davies:

"Murphy said the new band had been formed by Scott Wells and Paul Sprangers, two former members of Minneapolis band Hockey Night, with Murphy himself playing bass and LCD's Pat Mahoney playing the drums. He added that some of the members of DFA act Hercules and Love Affair are also contributing."

We haven't heard from the Hockey Night dudes in a couple years, but their Thin Lizzy-cribbing "Dark Trance" still gets some play around here on occasion. Looking forward to seeing where the DFA crew takes this.

Austin's White Denim is set to digitally release their debut US LP, Exposion, tomorrow via Topspin, the same method chosen by David Byrne/Brian Eno for their latest record. This is essentially a brand new platform, so I'm not entirely familiar with all that it entails, but some of the key features include:

• Directly from band to fan
• Ability to listen to tracks, buy individual songs, bundle the whole record, download artwork and lyrics, etc.
• optional subscription service (limited 7", limited live tracks, vids, artwork by steve, etc)
• Ability to get songs in FLAC format with album art

I guess you go here to sign up, and they'll let you know when it's available to purchase (in advance of the November 3 physical release date). WD also promises to "inundate you with music, video, drawrings, and more." The band headlines a sold-out show tonight at NYC's Mercury Lounge, and will play again tomorrow night at Union Hall.

Following on the heels of his Donuts-esque Dil Cosby Suite comes the latest installment in Madlib's Beat Konducta series, and the second part of his fitting tribute to the legendary J Dilla: Beat Konducta Vol. 6: Dil Withers Suite. This one is excellent in its own right, but play it in its entirety back-to-back with Vol. 5 as a two-part "suite" (as intended?), and you have what might be my favorite hip-hop release of '08 thus far. Labrador calls Pallers' sound, "dance music for the lazy, the blazers and for the slightly depressed."

I've long been a devoted fan of Numero Group's uniformly stellar Eccentric Soul compilation series, and their latest release, Eccentric Soul: The Young Disciples -- composed of 21 lost gems from East St. Louis' Young Disciples collective from the late '60s/early '70s -- is among the strongest of the bunch. The whole thing is essential, but it's the three songs from Sharen Clark & the Product of Time that have been on repeat. In particular, this heartwrenching soul ballad from 1970 makes the fact that we've never heard of Ms. Clark before feel like a huge injustice:

The Notwist released their Boneless 7" today on Domino, and while the original is a fine song in its own right, I ordered the single solely for the b-side: Panda Bear's "sunny, tropicalia tinged remix." However, based on this super lo-fi 1:30 preview excerpt courtesy of Juno, the term "remix" is misleading: this is essentially a brand new Panda Bear song. I normally wouldn't post an excerpt, but come on:

The Boneless single is a vinyl exclusive, so if you want to hear the full remix, you're going to have to order the 7" (for now, anyway). Luckily, it'll cost you less than 5 bucks.

Nick Thorburn's (Unicorns/Islands) new project, Reefer, was inspired by "beautiful tropical surroundings, the sounds of the ocean, and being far away from their regular daily routines." Here, Flying Lotus takes the duo's "Let It Go" to the bottom of the sea, turning the song into an appropriately otherworldly underwater soundscape that wouldn't have been out of place on FlyLo's own Los Angeles LP:

Thanks to ISO50 for posting this amazing recording of Delia Derbyshire's utterly haunting 1964 sound collage, "Dreams," in which Derbyshire set "a collection of spliced/reassembled interviews" of people relating details about their recurring dreams (or nightmares) against her own "dissonant, often terrifying musique concrete soundbeds..." While browsing other Delia Derbyshire recordings here, I came across this equally disquieting, extremely lo-fi 1971 recording called "Tutankhamun's Egypt," which allegedly includes "trumpet calls from a 1939 recording of the silver trumpet found in Tutankhamun's burial chamber" (the contents of which we saw today in Dallas, coincidentally). Empire of the Sun's Walking On A Dream LP is officially out today (what's with the Saturday release dates, Australia?), and upon first listen, it doesn't disappoint. I've always been a Luke Steele fan, and the stellar production here by Nick Littlemore (PNAU) is a perfect complement to some of Steele's finest, strangest work since Lovers. Hyperbole has one of the record's standout tracks, "Half Mast," here.

Seems like everything Montreal's CFCF touches lately turns to gold. The kid is currently making some of the most authentic, classiest, exquisitely executed disco around, as evidenced by his rad forthcoming You Hear Colours // Invitation to Love 7", which is due out soon on Acephale. Here's "Invitation to Love," his dreamy edit of the Alan Parsons Project's "Voyager," which is the same tune featured on Quiet Village's "Pillow Talk." While I can't get enough of either one, CFCF's edit is definitely superior:

If you're in Dallas this weekend, come see White Denim on Saturday night at Pastime Tavern, before they head off to Iceland. Opening the show will be North TX locals and good friends of WD, PVC Street Gang. I've yet to catch the group's live show, but the extremely taut urgency in the vocals and overall sense of tension these two create on the super tight new song "Cutlass" should be more than enough to convince you to show up early. Highly recommended:

I think we can all agree that Department of Eagles' "No One Does It Like You" is one of the best songs of '08, but we haven't yet heard it quite the way it was performed last night on Conan, with Dan + Fred expanding the group to a 5-piece, with Dan's vocals complemented beautifully by female harmonizing from an unknown singer (EDIT: that's Angel Deradoorian from Dirty Projectors. Here are a couple of songs that have nothing to do with each other, aside from the fact that they're both catchy, decidedly lo-fi garage-punk ditties that would've made good jams for skating around in your backyard in like '91, on a homemade ramp of questionable structural integrity, just like that kid up there (photo also happens to be Wavves' album cover). That, and they've both been alternately bouncing around in my head for the last few days. Is it too early to predict that both of these guys will be big in 09?

The Splinters are 4 girls from Berkeley/Oakland, CA. I found "Splintered Bridges" on Skatterbrain, who called the song "the perfect soundtrack to being pulled by a dog through the mud really fast in a red wagon with a tambourine tied to the back," and I won't argue, because knowing that kid, he actually tried that. Listen to more girl-group sounds-meets-90s punk attitude from the Splinters' hand-decorated, self-released debut EP that you probably can't get anymore here.

Wavves is a kid from San Diego named Nathan Williams. He is a fan of the Beach Boys, Beat Happening, and the Wipers, and that good taste is reflected on the fuzzy "beach punk" slacker anthem "So Bored." Wavves recently put out a cassette-only release (pictured) that has since sold out, but it will be available again soon in LP format on Fuck It Tapes. A follow-up -- featuring this song -- is due in early '09 on De Stijl, so look for that (via).

From Esau Mwamwaya to that new Amadou & Mariam track to the Radioclit remix of Mujava's "Township Funk," I've been on a serious Afro-pop kick lately. I've also been digging on Light in the Attic and Vampisoul's recently released series of compilations, which are loaded with the kind of '60s and '70s West African pop (including Highlife, psych, folk, jazz, funk, and Afrobeat) that helped birth these new sounds. Chances are you've heard a good number of these jams if you're at all familiar with the genre(s), but this is a good way to find them all in one spot.
