what did he say

Deerhunter and Times New Viking are in Dallas tomorrow night, but the highlight of the lineup for me is L.A.'s Nite Jewel. I've written about her otherworldly, lo-fi avant-synth-pop before, but it's worth noting that her new Italians Do It Better 12" is out now, and her outstanding Good Evening LP is available on vinyl from Gloriette. I doubt she'll be back in town any time soon, so don't miss this show. Here's the slinky A-side from the Italians single:

polaroids: little joy | live in deep ellum

rodrigo/fabrizio/binki :: little joy

Little Joy's show at the Lounge in Deep Ellum on Wednesday night was a breezy, relaxed affair that only reinforced why we love the group's self-titled debut so much. Backed for much of the night by tourmates the Dead Trees, Rodrigo, Binki, and Fabrizio played virtually the entire album to an adoring, enthusiastic crowd of roughly 200. Highlights included an awesome cover of Helen Shapiro's (NOT Binki's mom, by the way) "Walking Back to Happiness," and a beautiful rendition of album standout "Don't Watch Me Dancing." The vibe inside the tiny venue was akin to that of some cramped speakeasy, and the band (especially Fab) seemed genuinely appreciative and moved by the warm Dallas welcome. Come back soon, guys. Check the full setlist and a video of the band performing "How To Hang a Warhol" here. Here are some photos:

vivian girls cover the beach boys, offer "fun pack"

The only thing more fun than the Vivian Girls record is probably a Vivian Girls Surf's Up Fun Pack. Comes complete with a t-shirt, some postcards/buttons, and a 7" with two new songs and a cover of the Beach Boys' "Girl Don't Tell Me." I can guarantee yall with 100% certainty that this will sell out, so get on it now.

Our friend Pinglewood has a new column over at NME called Your New Favorite Songs. In his first installment, he writes about GvsB favorites Salem, and their new Water EP:
"If you kidnapped Bauhaus, tied them up in your basement, tortured them with slo-mo Houston hip-hop and performance art pornography, then killed them, their ghosts might have sordid dreams about a record like this."
Probably the best description of the mysterious group I've seen since "the Cocteau Twins on a dirty south kick." Pinglewood also offers up this track, which may or may not appear on the new EP:

Looks like SXSW has just announced a few acts that will be appearing at the 2009 Music Festival. photos :: digable planets | live in dallas

Digable Planets played to a rare, exceedingly enthusiastic Tuesday night crowd at the Granada Theater here in Dallas last night. Although nostalgia definitely played its part in creating the overwhelming positive vibe in the room, the DPs stepped up and delivered what was probably the best hip-hip show here in town since the last time they rolled through. The group played (often re-worked versions of) most of their classic Reachin' and Blowout Comb joints over the course of their nearly 2-hour set, which was propelled by a tight live drummer and Jedi's thick-ass beats. We were also treated to what sounded like new material from the great Ishmael Butler (Butterfly), who I'd argue is one of the most underrated MCs from the tail end of hip-hop's golden age, and the dude has only improved over time. Now if they'd just release some new shit already.

Okay, so those Merriweather Post Pavilion excerpts from earlier are long gone (that didn't take long), but this is even better: hit up Les Inrocks to hear the glorious full studio version of "Brothersport," aka my current favorite Animal Collective song. Let's go ahead and call it the album closer of '09. Go to Les Inrocks (link to their site removed; google it) to listen; the song starts right around the :50 second mark.

Thanks to Rough Trade for hooking us up with this great clip of Little Joy performing the Binki Shapiro-fronted "Unattainable," one of my favorite songs from their charming self-titled debut LP. In my initial review of the record back in September, I said that "Shapiro's exquisite melodies and elegant vocals maintain a genuine innocence, ultimately resembling something you'd hear on a '40s AM radio dial." This song is pretty much exactly what I was talking about. Filmed at Binki's sister's house in L.A., and directed by Thunderbird. Watch the larger version here (recommended):

1970's Algerian Proto-Rai Underground is the latest gem from the inimitable Sublime Frequencies label. I'm admittedly unversed when it comes to the underground Algerian Rai scene of the '70s (as in, I was unaware that it existed), but SF offers a helpful summary. Also, I have no idea why this Cheb Zergui guy called this song "I Cuddle Myself," but apparently he's the one that introduced the electric guitar and wah-wah pedal to the scene, and the results on this one are pretty dirty.

thom yorke is psyched about Obama, gives away free remix

Via Dead Air Space:

"in celebration of nov 5th
jonnys burthday
amid bonfire and fireworks in the UK
and the dawn of a new era in politics in the USA
i humbly donate a remix of harrowdown hill that was finished ages ago during the band webcasts,
a small reminder of the dark days of Bush's....

diplo :: banned in libya

Here's a clip from "Banned in Libya," a rare old bootleg DVD from '04 that I've heard about but never been able to find. The "street collage"-style clip features some of Diplo's early (pre-Florida) work set to images of Juvenile, Mike Tyson's Punchout, some NSFW lounging, and the motherfucking Herculoids (one of the few shows I DVR, true story).

new metric :: help, i'm alive

Emily Haines talks about time spent in Buenos Aires recording the new Metric album, and discusses/previews new single "Help, I'm Alive," which, according to CBC, was apparently offered briefly as a free download on the Metric site (it's not there anymore, but it can still be found with a little digging).

to be still

Rough Trade Records has announced the signing of Portland/Nevada City's Alela Diane, one of the most absurdly overlooked and underappreciated folk singers of the last few years (and, a gorilla vs. booze 07 alum). Her new LP, To Be Still, is set to be released on February 17 of next year. If you're unfamiliar with Alela's timeless and intensely affecting work, go here to download what is probably my favorite Daytrotter Session to date (only partially because I was there); hopefully this haunting unreleased gem from the session will appear on the upcoming record:

beach demon//weed demon

Excuse the dearth of brand new shit around here over the last couple weeks, but I honestly haven't been feeling much new stuff lately*, with one glaring exception being just about every unstoppable melody I've heard from San Diego's WAVVES. "So Bored" and "Beach Demon" remain on repeat, as does his entire S/T Fuck It Tapes cassette, which is currently wearing out the only tape deck I own. Up next: Wavves is about to drop his Beach Demon/Weed Demon 7" on Tic Tac Totally. The release is limited to 300 copies, but get on it early skaters, because only the first 100 come with grip tape. You can also download the whole thing for free in super-high quality at Wavves' blog.

*other exceptions: new records from Q-Tip and Little Joy came out today, and both are tight. Talk to yall later, gotta go have an anxiety attack watching these results roll in.

new fight bite 7"

As I've mentioned before, Denton dream-pop duo Fight Bite are responsible for one of the year's best debut LPs, Emerald Eyes, as well as one of my absolute favorite songs of 2008, the devastatingly beautiful and intimate "Swissex Lover." They've recently released the song as a limited 7" single through the newly-minted We Shot J.R. Records; go here to order for only $5. Highly recommended as a warm addition (alongside the likes of Beach House and Grouper) to any "cold Autumn evening" playlists:

A day late for Halloween, but XXXChange dropped this 43-minute mix on East Village Radio last night, and he just posted it to the Fully Fitted blog (minus "the talky part"). Hit up his blog for the eclectic tracklist, which features the likes of Fela Kuti, Justice, Cerrone, Little Boots, and more.
