dara puspita

When Animal Collective was in town last week, Geologist suggested that based on our over-posting of Dum Dum Girls, Vivian Girls, and the like, we may be into the fuzzy garage pop from relatively obscure '60s Indonesian girl-group Dara Puspita. I tracked down --and have subsequently been enjoying -- their exceedingly charming 1967 album A Go Go, which is definitely worth a listen if you can find it (the original LP is apparently next to impossible to find, and it isn't cheap). Check the sweet Bee Gees cover, which is approximately 5x better than the original:

dara puspita :: to love somebody
dara puspita :: believe me

And from their first record, 1965's Jang Pertama, the "Satisfaction"-aping "Mari-Mari" (via):

dara puspita :: mari-mari

Read more about Dara Puspita here, and download some more rarities from these dudes, who call the girls "the best pre-ironic tropical psych-pop ever."

Not sure what to say about this one: the dude who brought us this does this with Phaseone's "Daily Routine" remix...

animal collective :: daily routine (phaseone remix)

whoa chris! how did you get your hands on Dara Puspita??
I mean, I am Indonesian and i live in Jakarta (capital city of Indonesia)..
yes i know them, they were quiet famous among grandpas and grandmas..
but it's really hard for everyone to get their hands on their works! Even here in Jakarta.. So, how the hell did you got them there in the U.S.?
Wow..the fact that you and Geologist love them just makes me happy..I feel more proud to be Indonesian..hahahaha
By the way..i love your blog..you're awesome..

This reminds me of this Thai disco cassette I got at Goodwill years ago. Had a Depeche Mode cover, but this tape was inside instead.

Crazy instrumental Abba covers, with a lead guitar with some crazy effects doing the voice parts.

Forget the name, but it was awesome. Unfortunately, i left it out in the sun in my car on a summer's day and it melted.

I remember 'Mari-Mari' being played on PRI's 'The World' back around 2002 or so, but was unable to remember the name of the group, etc.

Thanks, Chris!
