FIRSTIES

in ~5 years, "My Girls" is going to sound ultra-dated in ways that most of the rest of these songs won't/haven't. Maybe.

Otherwise decent lists, I guess. Not enough love for Stars of the Lid or non-My Girls MPP tracks though IMO

these lists are MUCH better than the albums list, IMO

hi guys

i liked both your lists. reminded me of a few things i havent listened to in a long time. and pointed me towards some new ones. the white denim stuff is pretty good..

just one question (and i really dont mean to be rude)

how in GODS NAME is HELLHOLE RATRACE not on either of your lists, let alone holding the number one position?????????????

you rushed to put this up now so your 'brand' and 'blog' don't seem 'influenced' by other 'tastemakers', since if you like the same thing as 'popular' 'webzines' your 'personal brand' might not be considered 'alt' or even 'culturally relevant'-- and then the 'bro' whose sole schtick is to mock worrying about whether you're allowed to like music depending on what it might say about you or who else might like it unironically introduced the two-part feature. weird.

"Someone Great" has the most incredible lyrics. They can be interpreted so many ways, but at the same time would never be described as vague. Nice list.

"Thinking of a Dream I Had"! Fuck Yeah!

naturally i have issues with your lists.

1 being no one counts a decade starting from 0. why didn't you make one last year starting with 1999? cause that would look stupid. this looks stupid.

another being you guys claiming the strokes and yeah yeah yeah's are like the most important bands of the decade

i could think of more problems but whatever

It freaks me out both lists had Arcade Fire, but neither mentioned Crown of Love... Which is the crown jewel of Funeral in my opinion.

I am happy to see Radiohead's Idioteque on here.

Much better than the albuns list... That was just some crazy drunken pile of albuns you threw back there wasn't it... Yet I still feel there's some kind of recency effect in some of these choices... Common Lonesome Tears from Beck, anything from Feels is far superior to any single one from MWPP...Where's Postal Service? well, you could have millions of them switching positions... Good job either way...

i think i like david's list better.
i was suprised that chris chose my girls over grass/fireworks/for reverend green/summertime clothes

I think the lists seem pretty good...some great hits all around...what people who read this don't understand is that these are in fact lists of other peoples, with other peoples preferences, so saying what they would do differently is pointless because its completely opinion based. but nice job!

I respect these lists a good deal.

I mean, I don't agree with every choice here, but at least it's authentic and not some seriously weak traffic ploy in the vein of Pitchfork's Hageen-Dazs-fueled ballyhoo.

Give me a goddam break.

VERY nice! (both but esp chris list)

also enjoying watching commenters get Very Angry at you. everybody chill & make your own damn lists, right.

My Girls is entry level. Brothersport.

Worried that subscribing to this post will cause me to receive 120 email notifications in the next 48 hours like the album list did. Seems necessary though. Good comments around these parts.

I always thought "Daily Routine," "Bluish," and "Guys Eyes" were better songs than "My Girls."

Just saw them at Lollapalooza and thought it was a graceful move to not shove that looped Jamie Principle sample in our faces like we don't know where we come from. It was a good show.

"I Feel Like Dying?!" Really?! Probably one of my LEAST favorite songs of the decade. But, good choices otherwise.

Also, directed to one or two people in these comments: you are not Carles, stop jacking his writing style. It's not clever unless you invented it.

Pyramid Song on Chris's list and Did You See These Words? on David's list are the best sleeper picks by far. Don't know if many fans of either band would even consider those on their "decade list" but I couldn't agree more.

Great lists guys.

"Since I Left You," but no "Extra Kings?" That song is the perfect bookend to one of my albums of the decade. Glad at least one track showed up, though.

Time to listen to "Fix Up, Look Sharp" for the first time in way too long.

david came suuuper close to what my list would look like. a few i'd include:

Jens Lekman - Maple Leaves
Beck - 1000 BPM
TVOTR - Tonight

and a fuck ton of Walkmen to boot

of all the post punk outfits this decade, i think the futureheads were the best, so good i'm not sure which songs of their's i'd even include

4:41 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Props to including Deltron 3030's - 3030

To the anonymous posting about decades and shit:

Are you trying to say that 1980 was part of the 70's? That sounds retarded. Secondly what the fuck does "why didn't you make one last year starting with 1999?" even mean?

Nice lists, guys.

Thank you guys, love the lists... I'm reminded why this is one of the few music blogs that I continue to check. Avalanches, Beach House, Walkmen!! My only disappointment is not seeing Notwist's "Neon Golden" on the album or song list.

I'm surprised

does no one else feel the same way that comfy in nautica is one of the best panda bear/animal collective songs ever done.

Comfy and My Girls are the two more obvious and yet telling of Animal Songs.

While others are shrouded in mystery shouts and complications, comfy and my girls just says fuck all that noise. Hipsters feed off our complications but we aren't with you for the sake of being with you. Being yourself is all you can do in the end don't go following the trends and don't get greedy, take value in your life and decisions not buying your value.

The songs beauty is in the fact that they doing what they preach.
Keeping it simple.

Thanks for the lists guys, both this one and the albums. I forgot about some of these songs, and i'm glad that you included them.
i was disappointed to see that Midlake's Roscoe didn't make the top songs though, since you raved about it in 2007. Same deal with anything by sufjan or st. vincent. no "Casimir Pulanski Day" or "Paris is Burning".
for shame doc. :-)

Lists are both great... thanks for making them short and sweet, instead of overdoing it with the top 500 like Pitchfork. 50 is great; 100 is a little too much; 500 is asinine. Who even has the time to look over all of those? Thanks again!

Decent list, but eerie after reading PFork's list today and seeing how nearly identical these are. Seriously, it's coincidental that you both have Outkast's B.O.B in the top 2? Really?

I mean I don't COMPLETELY disagree, but these things are pretty arbitrary. One man's trash is another's treasure. Yadda Yadda. But the similarities are killing me here. If they are all coincidental, I'll give you a million dollars.

I have a tough time seeing why anyone would find "Hard to Explain" the best song on that album, much less the best song of the decade.

I'm not all worked up about it, just confused. ::shrug::
