Multi-instrumentalist Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear releases his debut solo 7" single under the CANT moniker today on his own Terrible Records imprint, backed with an unreleased Arthur Russell track. Take a listen to Taylor's gorgeous and haunting (and aptly titled) contribution below; fans of his other band will no doubt be extremely pleased:

CANT :: ghosts

The CANT/Arthur Russell split 7" is limited to 1000 copies, and was recorded/produced by Taylor in his church/studio in Brooklyn. Get it here before they're gone.

I'm a fan of Grizzly Bear and I don't quite like this.

This is too gvbcore for me.

Everything that is relevant is gvbcore. This is relevant, hence, it is the crux of gvbcore.

Those Grizzly Bear boys have got to stop being to good at what they do. It's making everyone look bad. Plus, is it just me or does this sound like what it'd be like if Grizzly Bear worked with Panda Bear?

I don't agree with using an unreleased Arthur Russell song as your B-Side. Just write a second song.

I know he worked on "Love Is Overtaking Me," so I'm sure that Chris had the blessing of Arthur's estate, but releasing a split with a guy you never knew, even somebody you really respect and have publicly championed, is in poor taste I think. It also gives this release an air of importance to an audience that might not even care about "Ghost."

Just one opinion though.

Chris is awesome. And I always thought he had a really great voice. He should make pop music too.

woopie-- his record label is releasing a series of split-7", hence the arthur russell b-side. it's hardly self-important.

it is still egotistical and obnoxious. i am pretty sure arthur russell deserves his own single. and this track by CANT barely deserves a release. it is dull as shit.

how on earth is it egotistical or obnoxious? he's putting out an arthur russell track that probably wouldn't see release otherwise, in a pretty limited run.

one of the more inexplicable/bad opinions i've seen in the comments of this blog in quite some time

because he made it the B SIDE of his own solo single. i have not heard of this CANT single referred to once as a 'split' single. his own website barely mentions it. like an afterthought. like someone else said already record a 2nd song. it just seems not right with someone as revered as arthur russell.

"woopie-- his record label is releasing a series of split-7", hence the arthur russell b-side. it's hardly self-important."

What jumps out at me about this is that it's HIS label, and therefore this was HIS decision.. He obviously got permission to release some of Arthur Russell's unreleased material via that label, fine. For the sake of argument, I'll even overlook the very good point that to all appearances it seems to be the B-Side to "Ghosts." So let's say his choice was to put a song out on a split 7" with his FIRST EVER released solo recording. As a result, nobody even got to see if his solo work could stand on its own two feet before Chris Taylor is drafting himself as one of Arthur Russell's peers.

Like it or not, splits are generally put out by bands that are on something of the same level. In putting out a "split" between himself and Arthur Russell, Chris has perhaps unintentionally put that out there. He seems like a really nice guy, so I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he probably just got excited about being able to put out a song by a musician he admires this much, but I definitely think he got carried away and didn't think through the psychic fine print that some people would pick up on.

p.s. There are no bad opinions, as least so far as pop music is concerned.
