the golden filter x empire of the sun

The Golden Filter adds this spaced-out take on Empire of the Sun's "We Are the People" to their already impressive list of stellar official remixes. Last remix from the group for a while, though, as they're finally off to work on their own stuff...

new burial: "moth"

Burial + Four Tet are set to release a highly anticipated split 12" called Moth/Wolf Cub next month on Kieran Hebden's TEXT label. Info about the split has been hard to come by, but Juno is now streaming previews of both tracks, and they both sound amazing. I'm guessing on these track titles based on the 12" title, but I think it's safe to assume the a-side is Burial's contribution.

fake surfers

Song of the night: some enjoyably warped/slightly demented lo-fi pop genius from Seattle's Intelligence. The incredibly infectious "Thank You God For Fixing the Tape Machine" is taken from the group's upcoming Fake Surfers LP, which is out May 26 on In the Red (home of Vivian Girls, Strange Boys, Black Lips, etc), and has been on heavy rotation around here over the last week or so:

Amanda from Pocahaunted, Cameron from Sun Araw, Britt from Robedoor, and various other Not Not Fun weirdo all-stars make up lo-fi garage-soul "supergroup" Vibes. I mentioned the group's debut cassette You God It a couple months back, and that's long gone now, but we're currently wearing out a test-pressing of their funky-as-hell upcoming Psychic EP, which is due out soon on NNF. The 4-song 7" features more filthy basslines, blown-out drums, raw "spirit soul" grooves, and Amanda getting down like a banshee. Here's b-side "Night Court":

acrylics

Brooklyn's Acrylics is the latest band to emerge from the Chairlift/Amazing Baby/MGMT fam that has seen so much success over the last year or so, and based on the handful of songs I've heard from the group thus far, they're roughly one iPod commercial away from blowing up like the rest of that crew. The duo -- Molly Shea and Jason Klauber -- has professed their love for Gram Parsons, Fleetwood Mac, and "really, really crystallized pop from the seventies," and that influence shines bright via Shea's dreamy, wistful yearning on the vaguely "Dreams"-esque "Molly's Vertigo," which the band was kind enough to send over for us:

sugar mountain

Of all the outstanding exclusive releases I picked up on Record Store Day, the highlight is without question Neil Young's incredible Sugar Mountain: Live at Canterbury House 2xLP, which is available today for the first time on 200g vinyl. Released late last year on cd, the record documents a then-22-year-old Young's first post-Buffalo Springfield solo performances, at the Canterbury House in Ann Arbor, Michigan. A little pricey, but totally essential, as the sound quality is astoundingly great. There will apparently be only one pressing run, so this will inevitably sell out quick (they were all gone by the time I left Good Records).

crystal castles vs. dallas

Interesting evening in Dallas last night, as VEGA was kicked off the Crystal Castles bill by CC's management for something that Alan Palomo of Vega vehemently denies. CC proceeded to cancel the sold-out show altogether at around 10 PM due to what they claim was an "ill-equipped" soundsystem (a soundsystem which has accomodated the likes of Animal Collective, Holy Fuck, Ratatat, and countless other acts with extensive sound needs in the recent past). Chances are you don't care about this either way unless you're a fan of the band or were one of the thousand or so kids waiting outside for 2+ hours for the show to start, but here goes, and you can make up your own mind:

My hasty tweets last night about the evening's events prompted the following response from a representative of the Crystal Castles, which, of course, the Granada Theater categorically denies in their reply, after the jump...

****************

From a representative of Crystal Castles:

"a) Vegas (sic) were not kicked off for "petty bullshit", if Vegas want to try to create an internet meme out of this that's fine, whatever.

b) CC obviously did not want to leave 1000+ people hanging outside. The people at Granada pulled the plug on CC during CC's soundcheck, claiming they feared CC would "blow the soundsystem." The people at Granada tried to rent (at the last minute) proper speakers that would not "blow" for the show but it just couldn't happen on short notice. At one point they thought they had found professional speakers but 2 hours later this fell through and the decision was made that the show could not happen. Also of note, a DJ had blown their speakers a few weeks ago and they did not want this to happen again. They said they couldn't afford to repair the speakers again. It would be nice if you knew the truth and were fair to the band since this wasn't their fault. The blame goes to whoever booked this band at this ill-equipped venue."

and finally:

"Vega stole an FX-Pedal from CC. If this is not a good reason to get kicked off a bill and (possibly) get blacklisted by a promoter I don't know what is. Worst part is CC liked the guys and tried to convince us to forgive them."

VEGA's Alan Palomo denies this: "Fucking bullshit." Apparently CC borrowed one of VEGA's guitars in Austin the previous night, and the FX-pedal ended up in the guitar cab. As soon as Vega realized they were in possession of one of CC's pedals (shortly after the Austin show), they called CC's management to rectify the situation, and arranged to return the pedal in Dallas. Both the venue and Vega feel that Crystal Castles had no intention of playing this show with Vega on the bill from the beginning. Listen to audio of Palomo's response here.

****************

Mike Schoder, owner of the Granada, sent this reply:

"Let me start with a definition:
Prima donna:
Prima donnas cannot help the way they are because their parents spoiled them and they are still developing their personalities.
All a prima donna has to do is whine and their parents give them what they want.

Here's how our day went at the Granada on Tue:
Vega (Alan from Ghosthustler) opened for CC in Austin Monday night.
At 5pm (3 hrs before doors) we received a call from CC that Vega could not be on the bill.
Vega had been approved by CC in advance for the bill.
Early on Tue CC hired a light tech from Austin that is also a DJ to replace Vega.
CC could have communicated with Vega early in the day before they left Austin.
Vega was at the Granada waiting to soundcheck.
CC would not enter the building until Vega was gone from the premise.
Alan was super cool. No prima donna.
We've never seen this request. The other co-promoter out of Austin has never seen this kind of request.
CC whining...
CC soundchecked at 6pm instead of at 4pm.
CC didn't "like the sound of their kickdrum".
CC insists that "more woofers be brought in".
Rental places close at 6pm.
It is now 7pm.
Granada has 16 - 18" sub-woofers and 12 - 15" sub-woofers. Also 32 - 8" midranges. Lots of firepower.
Sound check was great.
CC says they would rather cancel the show than possibly not have enough kick drum.
Granada begs that the show goes on.
Granada even offers to dismantle sub woofer stacks and place them in different places in the room.
Granada was willing to do anything to have the show go on.
CC waits until after 10pm to give final cancellation.

The show must go on. Life is all perception. One person sees the day as beautiful, another sees the day as crap.
Why would any band crap on their fans like this?
Insecurity is a cancer. Love yourself. Love your sound guy and the system at the club you are playing.
Play the show. Then listen to your fans. If you don't like the sound at a club never go back to the club.
We've had every big band imaginable in every genre imaginable and had amazing shows.
Nobody has complained about our sound. This is totally out of left field.
The sound at Granada is amazing...and would have been if CC would have just got on stage and played.

Today Granada is refunding ticket cost and entire service charge to each patron.
No one cares for live music more than we do. We've put together an amazing room, staff and sound system.
We'll see you soon fellow music fans.

Mike Schoder and all the Staff at Granada.

can you keep a secret

Captured Tracks has been on a bit of tear this year. In addition to a handful of solid 7"s (the Mayfair Set, Brilliant Colors, Woods, etc.), Mr. Blank Dogs' label has released two of my favorite 12" EPs of '09 so far: Dum Dum Girls' Yours Alone and now, Wooden Glove, the debut 4-song EP from Toronto's the Bitters (the cover art rules too, by the way). I declared my love for Ben Cook (of Fucked Up) and Aerin Fogel's new project -- specifically the great song "Warrior" -- a couple months back, and I'm pleased to say that Wooden Glove is more of the same raucous, kind of dirty and always insanely catchy "cave pop." Enter singer Megan Louise, whom Jewel discovered while on tour in Louise's hometown of Montreal. listen to animal collective's remix of yeah yeah yeahs' "zero"...

...sort of. It's actually just a short preview, but we'll take what we can get at this point. Sounds kind of promising; just try to ignore the annoying hearing test beeping thing.

Phoenix's great new single gets a dose of '80s nostalgia on this, the 800th remix of this song (and probably the first one worth listening to):

Love is All is giving away some recently recorded covers of a few of the group's "favourite Swedish classics," including a cover of all-girl punk band Tant Strul's (aka Lykke Li's mom's band) 1980 single "Pappas Tant."

born 2 B fly

Our friends at True Panther Sounds (home to Girls) are set to release the debut from the Fly Girlz, a group of young female MCs -- ages 12 to 14 -- that attend Brownsville Middle School PS 284 in NYC. The group formed during a supplementary after-school arts program facilitated by the city. As the story goes, "the program began with 22 students...the Fly Girlz were the last 6 standing." Nathan Corbin of Excepter laced the tracks with some dirty, often sinister beats -- as one of the girls puts it, "it was all like techno up in there" -- and the girls drop earnest rhymes about boys, school, etc., occasionally mixing in some intense/grim subject matter. Like a harder, socially conscious version of L'Trimm:

new dirty projectors: "stillness is the move"

Dirty Projectors' Amber Coffman channels Beyonce/Mariah/Whitney over some hypnotic West African guitar steez on the group's rad new single, "Stillness is the Move." I sort of miss the subtle chord change from the live version, but this is still a great, great jam:

edit: video removed from youtube

The Stillness is the Move 12" single is out April 21. Consider it pre-ordered.

contest: win 12 radiohead vinyl EPs

Not sure how Radiohead feels about this one, but their former label is releasing 12 classic Radiohead EPs on April 21 -- pressed for the first time on 180 gram vinyl -- and we've got a copy of each to give away to one winner. Titles include Paranoid Android, My Iron Lung, Fake Plastic Trees, No Surprises, 2+2=5, Karma Police, and more. To win, just convince us why we should pick you in 140 characters or less via an @reply on twitter, and I'll pick a winner one week from today.

Related: if you don't already have them, you can now purchase the new expanded "collector's editions" of Radiohead's first three full-lengths here.

bullion remixes amadou & mariam

On repeat this morning: Bullion's brand new remix of Amadou & Mariam's "Ce N'est Pas Bon." No word on where/when this will be released, so head over to Bullion's myspace to check it out. And in case you missed this psych-soul gem from Bullion's new Young Heartache EP:

bullion :: time for us all to love

Heads up: new Wavves vinyl 7", out now on Dean Spunt's PPM label. The a-side features one of Wavvves' best songs, "To the Dregs," while the b-side features "a more mellow rendition" of the a-side. Only 1000 pressed, so it'll probably be gone today and on ebay for 25 bucks tomorrow.

Download some great new unreleased Crystal Stilts songs from their recent Daytrotter session. "Through the Floor" and "Sycamore Tree" (which the band calls "graveyard dance music") are highly recommended.

black thunder

Not to be confused with regular VEGA, Liquid Vega makes like a murkier, more desolate Chromatics on slow burner "Black Thunder," courtesy of the detached (bored?) sadness in singer Gevenvieve Duprie's voice:

Speaking of VEGA, he's opening for Crystal Castles next Tuesday, April 14, at the Granada Theater here in Dallas. The Granada's hooked us up with 5 pairs of tickets to give away; just email us at gorillavsbearcontests@gmail.com if you'd like to attend, and I'll pick the winners at random next week.

black monk time

I mentioned this the last time I posted on these guys a couple years ago, but it still sort of blows my mind that the Monks even existed in the early to mid-1960s. The group of 5 American GIs -- stationed in Germany at the time -- seemingly emerged from nowhere with a new brand of furiously raucous but undeniably poppy experimental garage-punk that was years ahead of its time, effectively confusing the shit out of countless German teenagers (see videos, below). If you were unfamiliar with these dudes, now's a good time to get acquainted, as the group's seminal Black Monk Time LP is being reissued -- complete with 6 rad bonus tracks, including the incredible unreleased jam "Pretty Suzanne" -- along with a collection of previously unreleased early demos (including two songs the group recorded as the 5 Torquays) by the great Light In the Attic Records.

evenfall

"evenfall" by agnes montgomery

Evenfall is the upcoming LP from Paris' Sebastien Schuller (out May 25), and the album's stunning collage cover artwork is by one of my favorite artists, the amazing Agnes Montgomery. You may recall Montgomery's glorious Pool Party, which graced the cover of Panda Bear's Person Pitch, and is probably the most uncannily fitting album artwork of, well, ever. Listen to Schuller's new song from Evenfall, "The Border," at his myspace page. In the meantime, I was somehow unaware of the existence of this cover of Schuller's "Weeping Willow," by Austin's Jared Van Fleet, aka Sparrow House:

gorilla vs. booze III video recap

Okay, one last SXSW-related post: Our friend/Emmy award-winning director Pete Ohs put together this rad little video montage from our Gorilla vs. Booze III SXSW day party at East Austin bar/sauna the Peacock. Thanks again to the great bands (Harlem, Vivian Girls, Here We Go Magic, the Golden Filter, Wavves, Girls, White Denim, Sober) and sponsors (C3, lala, Red Stripe) for making it such a memorable event, and thanks to Pete and his Projectmill crew (Mandy, Caleb, and Joshua) for capturing it all:

mp3: thom yorke x DOOM

Nowhere near as good as the Dilla-produced, Moroder-sampling original (which is one of the best hip-hop tracks of the year), but still, it's Thom Yorke remixing DOOM. Grab the mp3 here.

tell it in my ear

Thanks to We Shot J.R. for staying up on the thriving Denton scene, and for introducing us to Fergus & Geronimo, the rad new group from Jason Kelly (Wax Museums) and Andrew Savage (Teenage Cool Kids, who've gained some national attention recently thanks to an absurd cease & desist from the other Cool Kids). Savage's original idea for the project was "Four Tops by way of Mothers of Invention," and based on the three great Motown-inspired lo-fi tracks I've heard from the group thus far, they kind of nailed that. "Tell It in My Ear" may or may not be the best of the bunch, but it has been on repeat all morning. Play it loud:

mp3:
fergus & geronimo :: tell it in my ear

Fergus & Geronimo have releases planned on the consistently awesome Woodsist and Troubleman Unlimited labels in the near future, so I'm guessing you'll be hearing from them again soon.

Two promising new tracks arrived in my inbox last night from mysterious newcomers Neon Indian, an anonymous new collaborative project from "a guy and a girl who make music via correspondence. One in Brooklyn, one in Austin." I've got my guesses as to who these guys are, but for now, just enjoy these spacey, wistfully nostalgic disco-psych jams:
