ida maria, neon indian added to monolith 2009

This is shaping up to be pretty amazing, and they're only about half way done announcing the lineup, with a few huge surprises still to come. Some other highlights so far:

The Walkmen
Method Man + Redman
Girl Talk
M. Ward
The Twilight Sad
HEALTH
Passion Pit
The Thermals
Deer Tick
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
The Antlers
Frightened Rabbit

kurt vile signs to matador

Philly's Kurt Vile -- the man responsible for one of the best albums of '09 thus far -- has signed a "worldwide, multi-album pact" with Matador, and they're really psyched about it. The label will release his next LP, Childish Prodigy, in Autumn 2009.

life on earth

tiny vipers | Life on Earth

Spent much of the evening listening to/being extremely impressed by the entrancing new LP from Tiny Vipers, Life on Earth (out July 11). Produced by Andrew Hernandez in a "classic analog studio in Austin, TX," the record is haunting and spare and a bit somber, but Jesy Fortino's voice lends an undeniable warmth throughout (Stereogum's David Thomas Broughton comparison was an apt one). I mentioned this track briefly the other day, but in case you missed it, it's now an official promo mp3 from Sub Pop; I think it's safe to say that if you're into this one, you're going to love the full-length:

Here's another from the new album called "Tiger Mountain," as performed in a dark San Francisco alley last summer for la Blogotheque:

Since we last heard from Dem Hunger (yesterday), the London producer has posted up a rad, unfortunately titled new mix culled from some old/obscure warped "dirty 45's" of unknown origin:

Yet another worthy addition for Phoenix remix completists: a spacey rendition of the group's summer hit "Lisztomania," by Phoenix-approved Canadians the Tremulance (also check their remix of the other most remixed song of all time, "Walking on a Dream"):

new Tim DeLaughter :: wee see

Described by its creators as "part art installation, part pacifier," Wee See features playful abstract black & white animations from Rolyn Barthelman, and a beautifully understated, mostly ambient score from the Polyphonic Spree's Tim DeLaughter. Inspired in part by their own children, the project was originally conceived as "sensory stimulation for young babies, with its basic shapes and patterns tailored to the developing senses of newborns," although, if you find yourself zoning out to these undeniably hypnotic dreamlike images/sounds at your full-grown adult job, it's totally understandable. Here's a 2-part preview:

[both full-length Wee See DVDs available now at weeseeworld.com and Good Records]

In related news, DeLaughter and his wife Julie are currently "in the early stages of writing songs" for the fourth Polyphonic Spree album, which the group is planning to release on their own Good Records label.

it's so hard to tell who's going to love you the best

Light in the Attic Records continues their flawless '09 reissue game (see the Monks, Serge Gainsbourg, Rodriguez) with the 180g vinyl-only reissue of the late Karen Dalton's 1969 Capitol Records debut, It's So Hard To Tell Who's Going To Love You The Best. This is the first vinyl reissue of this record, and the recording was re-mastered from the original tapes. Some perspective: Bob Dylan once said Dalton "had a voice like Billie Holiday's and played the guitar like Jimmy Reed," while Devendra Banhart has called her "the most soulful singer in the universe."

The label hooked us up with a copy of the reissue to give away; take a listen to the song below, and if you'd like a copy, just leave your name in the comments and I'll pick a winner next week. This thing looks super nice, and features a "beautiful 'old school' tip-on jacket with original artwork plus rare photos and new liner notes..."

a lovely sight

pisces | a lovely sight

The inimitable Numero Group -- best known for their consistently mindblowing Eccentric Soul compilations -- offers up a change of pace in the form of yet another seemingly out of thin air "How the hell had no one found this before now?" gem. In this case, though, it's some lost fuzzy late-'60s psychedelic pop/folk from Rockford, Illinois' Pisces, and their unreleased/virtually unheard 1969 LP A Lovely Sight. From the label:
"1969's A Lovely Sight, Pisces' only attempt at an LP, never made wax; but the fuzz guitar phrases and tambourine shuffle of "Dear One" instantly illustrate the band's woozy realm. Deeper inside, bass scales borrowed from Sgt. Pepper give way to Who moves wrecked by bad fidelity and harsh intrusions of found sounds. Jefferson Airplane's swirled, lysergic Haight Street utopia melds with the urban narcosis of the Velvet Underground's East Village."
mp3:
pisces :: dear one

If you like that song, it's safe to assume you'll enjoy the whole record, but if you're still not convinced, listen to a sampler of album tracks here. Out June 2 on cd/vinyl, or get it in mp3 format now here (recommended).

contest: major lazer

rihanna/major lazer

As we all know by now, Major Lazer is not Diplo + Switch, he's actually a "a Jamaican commando who lost his arm in the secret Zombie War of 1984" that cruises around on a rocket-powered skateboard and chills with nude Rihanna. Those other two dudes just produced the guy's album, Gunz Don't Kill People, Lazers Do. Moving on, we have a few Major Lazer prizepacks to give away, which include a copy of the new record on vinyl and cd, and this t-shirt, which for some reason was the most highly coveted piece of free swag in the history of SXSW (seriously, there were some near-brawls over those things). Just leave your name in the comments or in a tweet, and i'll pick the winners the day the album comes out (June 16).

In the meantime, here's the first single and an album sampler mix; I've had "Can't Stop Now" (2nd song in the mix, right after autotune baby) on repeat all week:

grouper | way their crept

Grouper's Way Their Crept was apparently reissued earlier this year, although no one ever told me about it, and it seems info on the reissue is kind of hard to come by. Anyway, you know how we feel about Liz Harris' last album, and this one is almost as good, though it's definitely on some bleaker, more atmospheric steez, and reaches deeper, murkier depths than the more song-oriented Dragging... It's also best listened to as one long, continuous haunted drone, making it without question one of the best "sleep" albums of all time. You can download the whole thing in mp3 format today through Sunday only for just $2.99 here.

new cass mccombs :: "dreams come true girl" + "jonesy boy"

cass mccombs :: catacombs

Catacombs (out on Domino in July in the U.S. ) is the latest effort from the most perenially underrated dude in indie rock, Cass McCombs. His Dropping the Writ was one of my favorite albums of '07, and the new record looks like it's shaping up to be the definition of a grower, with highlights like "You Saved My Life" and "Lionkiller Got Married" ranking among the most beautiful and affecting (and best) work McCombs has ever done. Take a listen to Catacombs' opening track and lead single "Dreams Come True Girl" -- featuring Hollywood legend Karen Black -- at his myspace page, and drop your e-mail at Domino's website to get a free mp3 of album track "Jonesy Boy."

underwater peoples

The summer-loving dudes at Underwater Peoples Records have a showcase sampler coming out May 28 (inspired in part by Robin Pecknold's tweeting, no less), highlighting many of the promising acts on their label, including Ducktails, Real Estate, and a bunch more you might not be familiar with yet. The following contributions from Julian Lynch, Family Portrait, and Real Estate are a few of my favorite totally blissed-out psychedelic beach jams that appear on the highly recommended comp; if you like these, download the whole thing exclusively from the girls at BUTTERxFACE:

mp3:
julian lynch :: banana jam pt. 1
family portrait :: mega secrets
real estate :: snow

hey boy

Apparently these guys were rad at SXSW, but I just found them through Girls' myspace page: Langley School x the Beach Boys x Spector = the Magic Kids' "Hey Boy."

mp3:
the magic kids :: hey boy

Not much info on these kids at this point, and I suppose they could end up on either end of the gimmick/awesome spectrum, but keep an eye out for a release soon on Memphis' Goner Records.
