mp3: Vivian Girls | "He's Gone" (Chantels cover)

We mentioned Vivian Girls' cover of the Chantels' classic "He's Gone" a while back, after being treated to a special a capella rendition here in Dallas. Next best thing: the group has decided to give away their charming studio version (which was recorded by their friend King Tuff) for free, so they sent it over for us to post here. The song will also appear on the b-side of the upcoming My Love Will Follow Me single, due out next month on the Girls' own Wild World Records.

So cool! The lead voice has a great doo-wop feeling, and the whole thing gets an A for earnestness. If you don't know them, find any of the original Chantels records on End and get lost in the amazing soulfulness, Also, if you're in the NYC area, four original Chantels are still alive and performing, although lead Arlene Smith rarely sings with the other three. However, the groups' current lead singer has a great sound, too, and the group still sings like a chorus of very soulful angels. Thanks, Vivian Girls; aside from a cool track, you're keeping the roots of rock alive!
