premiere: White Hinterland | "Icarus"

Kairos is the adventurous new full-length from White Hinterland, due March 9 on Dead Oceans. Influenced by a move from the East Coast to Portland and her recent listening habits (among other things), the new record finds Casey Dienel eschewing the jazzier/folk steez of her earlier work in favor of spectral, slinky modern R & B and minimal pop -- think Arthur Russell, Glasser, Dirty Projectors, the xx, tune-yards, et al. -- a sound previously hinted at on the group's stunning Timberlake/Russell covers that surfaced late last year. On the surface, a dramatic shift, but Kairos feels like an undeniably graceful, surprisingly natural step up. "Icarus" is the album's ethereal, spooky/sexy opening track:

White Hinterland :: Icarus

white hinterland :: my love (timberlake cover)
white hinterland :: lucky cloud (arthur russell cover)

Very nice. Reminds me of a sexier, beat-based El Perro Del Mar. Perhaps more confident, too.

I would be disappointed to hear Casey's abandoned the jazzy style if this song and the one on said the gramophone weren't so incredible. Wow.

Wow, indeed. Love the new direction--you can also hear another of her song on Said the Gramophone which is excellent.

I'm really excited for this record. The stuff they played when I saw them a few months ago was incredible. Tons of vocal layering.
