caveman smack

The enigmatic Dem Hunger (blog commenter of the decade) recently sent over his spaced-out, dizzyingly awesome debut record, Caveman Smack (due out February 23 on Leaving). The label describes it as "Madlib beats bubbling up from a oozing volcano, its Dilla ambience for a nuclear winter," but I'm partial to DH's own apt "description" of this thing:
"GUESS THE WHOLE IDEA IS SOME EARLY HUMAN JUST LAYIN AROUND WITH HIS EYES OUT OF HIS HEAD. ALL SKULL BASHED UP IN THE RIVER. THIS MUSIC SORT OF FLOATIN AROUND INSIDE HIS JAWBONE. THE BONES GET EATEN BY THE SUN, THEN IT ALL GETS SPAT BACK DOWN TO EARTH."

Please can someone explain to me why cassettes are back "in vogue" for limited album releases.

I understand why people enjoy digital music (availability, convenience), why some people like CDs (quality) and why some people cling on to vinyl (sound, physical appeal).

But cassettes? They seem to incorporate exactly none of those qualities. I can only assume it is some elitist point about making your music difficult to listen to.

This isn't an "anti-hipster" question though, I'm really interested.

Help me out?

yeah, i agree because the last thing that i want to do is to go out and purchase a cassette player. i should start making music and releasing it on 8-track.

imo, it combines the tonal quality of vinyl and the portability of cds/mp3s...

i think tapes are a physically attractive medium.

also, isn't funny that nowadays rappers put out mix"tapes" that are just mp3s.

yeah some people just like cassettes. whether it's a matter of aesthetics/sound/nostalgia/whatever, don't see why it's that surprising.

I don't believe that anyone "just likes cassettes". These things are planned aesthetic choices, deigned to make a statement.

I could release a song on Super NES cartridge, and it might be a nice statement about early-90s nostalgia and design aesthetics, and it might be a kickass tune, but I'd have a hard time convincing people that "I just like SNES cartridges".
