new joanna newsom | "good intentions paving company"

In which a seven minute jazz-country-meets-The Hissing of Summer Lawns piano jam somehow adds up to one of the best things Newsom's ever done. Listen here or here.

A non-trust fund female self-taught harpist (and much prettier) put out a nice record last year that got no notice, but is quite nice. Woodpecker Wooliams.

She also recently posted about Joanna Newsom on her blog. Worth looking at:

why do people assume she has a trust fund? did you see her bank statement or something?

Still all just kind of annoying. Never understand how people buy into her world so much. I guess it's escapism?

All admit I find the harp intriguing, but I'm wondering if it will be Joanna or Vampire Weekend as '10's most overrated/overhyped indie act.

For everyone making negative comments about her music and ability, you should seriously listen to all the material from her three albums. I saw her live last Wednesday, and she is absolutely the real deal; a prodigy of her time in terms of technique, songwriting, and composition. She's no "trust fund" musician either. I don't understand where you would get that. Her family are hippies from Nevada City, CA, that cared about nurturing her musical talent when she said she wanted to play the harp at age five.

Most importantly, another reason why Joanna Newsom's music is so spectacular is that it's never been done before. Sure, she has many inspirations (and I'm sure Joni is included), but it is entirely original in itself. Instead of acting disillusioned when someone genuinely talented and inspired gets recognition, try listening to the artist's entire body of work to get a reference point.
