poor gingers :-(
It's okay they don't have souls
MIA h8s gingers
Somebody needs to walk up to both M.I.A. and the South Park guys and smack them all upside the head with a copy of "Still Live with Woodpecker."
No matter what you think about the 'gingers', it's harrowing to watch. When's the day going to come where that could be any of us..?
as a redhead this is completely disturbing to me. what is the point exactly?
i think the point is that it could be anyone, not necessarily that MIA hates gingers. idk if she should be grouped with the guys from SP, as well.
having red hair is such a ridiculous thing to be killed for, its like the color of your hair!?! i think she's commenting on all the people who die everyday for other peoples agendas in the name of something ridiculous. personally. and to that ginger that found it disturbing, so did i, i think everyone is supposed to and like wake the fuck up to the fact that they dont care about you.

Where's the IRA when you need 'em?
thanks aivyl - next question. who is "they"?
we are supposed to be disturbed. war = awful. ppl wearing usa flags shooting/harming ppl who look a certain way (redheads as stand-in for ppl usa is actually killing/maiming in iraq/afghanistan/ etc ).
Check it out: thepursuitoffolk.blogspot.com
folk music blog. thanks for looking.
y'all need to brush up on your history -
In Germany they first came for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me —
and by that time no one was left to speak up.

i don't really like this song, and this video is the most obvious message ever. Overkill big time.
You can download M.I.A.'s "Born Free" here:

Suicide and Punishment Park remixed
@aivyl, i completely agree.
@anon, "they" are the mega wealthy/powerful banksters (rockefellers, cheney, rothschilds, bush family, henry kissenger, others)
its called the new world order. my blog is all about it
http://dontwakemeiplanon.blogspot.com/
First off, I love the song, looking forward to the album greatly. Second off the video is one of the best I've seen so far this year and I say that as a ginger myself. aivyl and anom 12:32 hit it right on the nail with there comments.
our time will come!
It's been alluded to but:
It has nothing to do with South Park in any way shape or form.
What she is attempting to convey is that this looks a hell of a lot worse when it's white people, perpetrated by Americans, but this kind of atrocity is done daily by people all over the world for reasons as arbitrary as hair color.
Albino africans being slain for magic powers
Rwandan, Armenian, Jewish, Palestinian genocides.
It could be for any reason, so you shouldn't just turn a blind eye because it's a different culture.
It's a social commentary on the middle east. Fucking morons.
as has already been said, the message appears to be fairly clear, but given the lassies background, i'm kinda surprised that no one has mentioned the parallels between the video's subject matter and the now-somewhat-abated-and-ignored sinhalese and tamil conflict in sri lanka...
on a different note, on first listen i thought the track was weak, then, following 5 more listens, pretty decent. and now, with the video, an absolute unforgettable blinder.
I don't really see this video as saying much at all. Just because they it has violence and slo-mo, doesn't mean it's profound. The music is nothing special either.
the whole video concept is a rip off peter watkins' movie "punishment park" (you guys need to check it out if you havn't heard of it before)not only the south park episode.
but i think this whole thing is crap, shocking and easy, nothing deep goin' on here (not like in the movie). the director is a total douchbag (i can tell, he's french and so am i and i actually met him a few times...) his daddy is a very famous director and that's how he got in the business, ripping off other people's concepts and using it only in a very commercial way. M.I.A. you need to wake up you just got ripped off by a french dick head !
it's insane to me that anyone can misinterpret such a heavy handed message. Obviously she doesn't hate gingers. This has less subtlety than the movie CRASH, and that's saying something.
choosing gingers as the metaphor was a bad choice
too comedic
i'm not a fan of the song but maybe because there are a lot of actors yelling over it. i think the video as some sort of political statement is pretty weak; it's too over the top to be taken seriously.
Isn't that violent Justice video by the same director? I find his work pretty weak.
The basic idea is not bad. But is this a political statement? No way, just something shocking to attract attention. MTV will ban it, people discuss it - et voila. Come on, some slow motion and the usual evil US troops? I'm not American but this is way too simplistic to go deep. And all the explicit violence?
Sometimes less would be more.
"I think this whole thing is crap, shocking and easy, nothing deep goin' on here.
Thhe director's daddy is a very famous director and that's how he got in the business, ripping off other people's concepts and using it only in a very commercial way." I AGREE!!
It is very flat thing, extremely verbatim without any smart unliteral symbols
Music isn't good as well, worse than old MIA.
It is more like 'I will be more shocking than GaGa'
If I would have enough money I could make a reconstruction of killing Polish people by Ukrainians in Second World War (Volhynia massacre) - which was probably more horrible way of killing than holocaust, balkans war, china problems - and put it inside Katty Perry video. Why not? MIA isnt Pasolini too
I can understand a lot, even political important message in pop music video that we shouldnt be indifferent but this is exactly MUSIC VIDEO
In my opinion, even video is a postcard from politics it is still a background for music
What kind of backrground is inside MIA video?
What if i like to watch that again and again?
What kind of BACKGROUND it is? Except 'nice' watching for aesthetic reasons like watching this kind of violence?
But this is not A Clockowrk Orange level as well
For me it is flat aesthetic video for rude boys from middle class jerking off next to the computer.
what's up with people reading so much into it? this is literally what life is like for gingers in england.
brilliant. its just a statement on how certain peoples are marginalised by their race/creed/colour. the "our day will come" mural is the english for the IRA slogan ( in gaelic)"tiocfaidh ar la". The video prob highlights that in another world something as simple as having different hair could make you a target for hate.
I'm pretty sure this is supposed to be related to the troubles in Sri Lanka and, by extension, the current conflicts all over the Middle East. Yes, the video is preachy as is the song, but that's the point. This is basically M.I.A. and the director spelling out foreign issues to those who cannot possibly grasp the gravity of those issues.
